Unique Properties
Astoria is a regal collection inspired by Queen Victoria’s reign. Radiating sophistication with its minimalist, ornate silhouette, Astoria is a statement piece in pure white, perfect for a noble atmosphere. The timeless, sculpted shapes impart classic poise and timeless elegance. Each piece is meticulously crafted with intricate detailing and finished with a lustrous glaze, showcasing exceptional craftsmanship. It resists stains and scratches, ensuring lasting elegance and functionality. Designed for modern living, the collection fits seamlessly into homes, hotels, and restaurants. Astoria combines opulence with practicality, making it perfect for any occasion.
Inspiration
Inspired by the refined sophistication during Queen Victoria’s reign, Astoria transports you back to a time of grandeur and grace, offering a collection that exudes opulence and timeless charm. A statement piece in pure white, perfect for a noble, celebratory atmosphere, each piece captures the elegance and intricate detailing of Victorian decorative arts. The collection’s ornate silhouettes channel the grandeur of the Victorian era while blending minimalism with modern sophistication. Truly, Astoria brings regal splendour to the table.
Research
For this project, the research was on the rich opulence of the Victorian era, with a particular focus on its timeless aesthetic and ornate detailing. Research was conducted to study the elaborate silhouettes characteristic of the period, which formed Astoria’s intricate shapes. Careful consideration was given to accessories that complement the collection, ensuring a cohesive and elegant design.
Challenge
The greatest challenge in designing the Astoria Collection was striking a balance between intricate Victorian-era embossing and modern subtlety. Researching and recreating historical designs was difficult, as deep embossing from the past needed refinement to provide a contemporary aesthetic. Achieving this delicate balance posed production challenges as it demanded precision and finesse. We overcame these obstacles by blending traditional craftsmanship with modern technology, ensuring the designs remained detailed yet understated.
Realization and Technology
Astoria is crafted from Luzerne's signature blend of clay sourced from Dehua, China, known for its purity and durability. This clay is the ideal base, bringing resilience and an elegant aesthetic to each piece. The production involves hand moulding, followed by the creation of a plaster master mould. Our specially formulated clay is then shaped using a casting technique that integrates both manpower and machinery. Each piece is meticulously sculpted with intricate detailing and finished with a lustrous glaze. The glazing process combines automated equipment and skilled handwork to ensure a clean, consistent finish.
Operation and Interaction
Users operate the tableware by placing food or beverages on/in the objects, such as plates, bowls, or cups. Its operation is simple and intuitive, designed for serving and consuming food. Astoria transforms in its use and presentation. Items can be stacked for storage, and used interchangeably . For example, bowls can be served on different plates, and cups can be paired with different saucers depending on the setting. Astoria’s pronounced shapes ensure comfortable handling and stability when in use, whether for dining or serving.
Project Duration and Location
The project started in October 2023 and finished in January 2024 in Singapore.
