The Golden A' Design Award Explained
The Gold A' Design Award is granted to designs that demonstrate a high level of innovation and a significant impact on their intended audience. Recognized as a major achievement by the A' Design Awards, these designs are characterized by their visionary approach and the exceptional skill of their creators. Winners of the Gold A' Design Award are noted for their ability to push the envelope in art, science, design, and technology, delivering solutions that not only meet but exceed expectations. These designs serve as benchmarks for excellence, encouraging further innovation and inspiring future generations of designers.
About U Step Staircase
U Step staircase is formed by interlocking two u-shaped square box profile pieces having different dimensions. This way, the staircase becomes self-supporting provided that the dimensions do not exceed a threshold. In-advance preparation of these pieces provides assembly convenience. Packaging and transportation of these straight pieces are also greatly simplified.
About Bora Yildirim
Bora YILDIRIM graduated in 1999 from the Department of Interior Architecture and Environmental Design of Hacettepe University in Ankara, Turkey. After working in different design companies, he started the master's program in the same department in 2001 and worked as a research assistant at Istanbul Maltepe University during 2002-2003.
Award Record
This recognition makes Bora Yildirim a winner of 2 A' Design Awards. The awards were granted between the 2016 - 2017 and the 2017 - 2018 editions of the A' Design Award & Competition.
About the A' Building Materials and Construction Components Design Award
The A' Building Components Design Award is an international design competition recognizing good building components by best brands and designers worldwide. It is organized within the A' Design Award & Competition and is open to building material manufacturers, building material brands, construction product designers and industrial designers from all countries. Typical entries include bricks, beams, windows, doors, insulation materials and roofing materials. The awarded building components designs are published at https://designers.org/design-category/building-components
About A' Design Award & Competition
Organized annually since 2008, A' Design Award & Competition is an international, juried design accolade. The competition is open to entries from all countries. The philanthropic mission of the A' Design Award is to advance society through good design, by recognizing and promoting superior products, projects and services that benefit society, and by creating a global awareness and appreciation for good design practices and principles. Nominations are peer reviewed and evaluated anonymously by an international grand jury panel of established academics, design professionals and press members against predetermined criteria such as functionality, ergonomics, engineering, presentation, innovation, usability, sustainability and technology, with score normalization applied to remove biases. Awards are conferred at Platinum, Gold, Silver, Bronze and Iron levels. Eligible laureates receive the A' Design Prize, which includes the award trophy, the certificate of design excellence, the hardcover yearbook, a lifetime license to use the A' Design Award winner logo, exhibition of awarded works, an invitation to the gala night and award ceremony in Italy, inclusion in the World Design Rankings and Designer Rankings, and public relations and publicity services. Registration, uploading a work and receiving a preliminary score are free of charge, and Professional and Digital Edition laureates are not contractually obliged to pay further fees to claim the A' Design Prize. Design Details
- Unique Properties
- This project is about how a staircase is formed rather than its design. The staircase is formed by interlocking two u-shaped square box profile pieces having different dimensions. Through this formation, the staircase can support its weight and a side anchor wall is not needed below certain dimensions.
- Inspiration
- The project focuses on the scarcity of resources, and hence, aims to minimize the amount of parts to use as well as other valuable resources such as cost, energy and time needed during packaging and transportation. To this end, a simple and lucid design is sought for. Having a modular design, it allows different forms, dimensions, colors and materials to be used in making a staircase. With such flexibility, the design provides a wide variety to meet different space requirements and demands.
- Research
- Stairs of various designs and applications are investigated during the design phase of the project. It has been observed that most of the time a stair needs on-site production due to structural constraints and in order to ensure that the staircase will fit and function as desired. This results in loss of time. The project aims to minimize the time loss by a design that is made up of modular parts that can be manufactured in advance, and thus, assembly is the only process required on site.
- Challenge
- The challenge at the beginning of every design is to find the one that is not found.
- Realization and Technology
- Stair stringer will be made of steel square box profiles and treads of wood. Glass, aluminum or other metals like mesh can be used for tread as well.
- Operation and Interaction
- The object is a self-supporting staircase that requires fixing only to the ceiling and the floor. Several U-shaped profiles of different sizes are interlocked to form the stair. Self-support is achieved by alternating the interlocking of the u-shaped pieces in horizontal and vertical arrangement. Components of the stair are made out of flat and small parts as a result of which transport and on-site installation are simplified.
- Project Duration and Location
- The project started in December 2017 and ended in February 2018.
- Specifications
- Tread: 30cm width, 120cm length and 3cm thickness (for wood), Riser Height: 16cm, Stair stinger: 5cmx5cm (steel square box profile).
- Keywords
- Stair, staircase, interlock, modular, self-support
