Puzzle Il Rivestimento In Poliuretano · 18 domande

Puzzle was inspired by pure geometric forms of truncated pyramid, probability theory and the idea to make a tile with the versatility to create various wall compositions.

What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?

Puzzle was inspired by pure geometric forms of truncated pyramid, probability theory and the idea to make a tile with the versatility to create various wall compositions.

What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?

I wanted to challenge myself and focus on a product design still fitting within the architectural space. I'm happy that NMC Belgium, a company with more than 70 year history, appreciated my design's qualities and decided to produce it as part of their prestigious product range.

What are your future plans for this award winning design?

The tile is under production with NMC Belgium and I hope that it will grace many companies' spaces and people's homes.

How long did it take you to design this particular concept?

From first idea through experimentation phase to concept finalization took about 12 weeks. The technical teams of the production company took a few more months to bring the tile to life in the right materials.

Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration?

I followed my inspiration

Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself?

The tile is in production by NMC Belgium.

What made you design this particular type of work?

The interior design trend, which is looking for a constant reinvention of wall surfaces.

Who is the target customer for his design?

From architects and design studios, all the way to end customers

What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts?

Combining the tiles freely, clients can create a huge variety of abstract geometric forms which give different textures suitable for office and public spaces, or home interiors.

How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean?

I was inspired by the versatility of the design and the countless combinations which were possible to create just using that tile, like a puzzle that has many variations. That's why I chose to name it Puzzle.

Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project?

Sketching, drawing, SketchUp, LayOut etc

What is the most unique aspect of your design?

The versatility and combinability of the design are its most unique feature. With just one style of tile, the Puzzle, it's possible to create almost unlimited compositions on the wall.

Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills?

I worked alone during the whole design concept phase. In regards to materials and production dimensions, I worked in collaboration with NMC's technical teams.

What is the role of technology in this particular design?

Technology plays an important part in the design process - from finetuning the conceptualization via digital tools, to ensuring the best production quality during the manufacturing phase.

Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design?

A fun part of research was trying to calculate how many different combinations can be made with a few Puzzle tiles only. Since every tile can be placed in 4 different ways, there's more different compositions possible than anyone can ever use!

What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept?

Actually the realization was not complicated due to the technical support of the production company.

How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition?

As I have participated already in other international design contests and received a prize for interior design, I decided to face the challenge in a product design competition. Entering the prestigious A'Design Awards competition was then a natural step.

What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work?

I learned a lot about materials, which can be used and further technological details about the production process.

Puzzle Il Rivestimento In Poliuretano · 10 domande

Pure geometric forms are a foundation of many interior styles. However even a slight change in a shape's construct often leads to unexpectedly good results and new possibilities.

Your innovative approach to the truncated pyramid geometry in Puzzle Polyurethane Wall Tile has earned recognition including the Bronze A' Design Award - could you share the creative journey that led to this pure, geometric form?

Pure geometric forms are a foundation of many interior styles. However even a slight change in a shape's construct often leads to unexpectedly good results and new possibilities. So my creative research always starts there, searching to enhance a shape through a new perspective and give it a fresh, unexpected look.

The versatility of Puzzle Polyurethane Wall Tile to be placed in four different ways creates fascinating pattern possibilities - what inspired you to incorporate this mathematical element of probability theory into the design?

My goal for each design is that it is aesthetically valuable, highly useful to the consumer and triggers their imagination - probabilities and the possibility to combine Puzzle in multiple ways is an opportunity for every client to exercise their creative impulse.

How did your background in civil engineering and spatial design influence the development of Puzzle Polyurethane Wall Tile, particularly in achieving both aesthetic appeal and practical functionality?

The strict functionality which is a characteristic feature of civil engineering helps me in my work as a designer, to focus not only on the product and interior's look & feel, but to lay as a foundation from the start a harmonic and cohesive marriage of function and vision.

The contemporary 3D design of Puzzle Polyurethane Wall Tile offers remarkable creative freedom - could you elaborate on how you envision designers and architects maximizing these compositional possibilities?

There are almost countless ways to combine Puzzle into very diverse compositions, so that allows designers and architects to really express their own - or their clients' - unique style. I anticipate that every professional will take advantage of all those opportunities that the design offers and I'm certain that I'll be pleasantly surprised by many creative solutions.

During the research phase for Puzzle Polyurethane Wall Tile, how did you determine the optimal dimensions and relief height to ensure both visual impact and practical application across different interior spaces?

I did research on available solutions on the market. Since the design was meant for wall decoration purposes, I aligned its dimensions to the most frequently applied interior spaces height, while the relief surface achieved a play of lights and shadows enriching the space.

The lightweight yet durable properties of Puzzle Polyurethane Wall Tile seem essential to its success - what considerations guided your material selection and manufacturing process collaboration with NMC Belgium?

My knowledge of the manufacturing company's production processes and raw materials guided my choice of material to best suit Puzzle's design. Polyurethane is a material that is light, durable and at the same time greatly serves the geometric shapes forming Puzzle.

Could you walk us through how the patent-protected design elements of Puzzle Polyurethane Wall Tile evolved from initial concept to the final product that offers such diverse application possibilities?

The idea of versatility was embedded from the beginning and served as foundation for the rest of the development. That made the road from inspiration to the final design fairly smooth. At the same time it was endlessly interesting to explore throughout the creative process how that versatility could be best expressed and offer the largest range of possibilities for the customer.

The ready-to-paint surface of Puzzle Polyurethane Wall Tile adds another layer of creative potential - how did this customization feature become part of your design vision?

The ability to color Puzzle's surface is of big importance, as applying a different palette enriches the whole interior vision and offers much more diverse opportunities / diverse solutions than a fixed-finish surface products.

What unexpected challenges emerged during the development of Puzzle Polyurethane Wall Tile between April and December 2020, and how did overcoming these shape the final design?

The process of adapting the initial design to the final one ready for manufacturing was actually relatively easy and not too time-consuming, since the parameters were already close to the manufacturing capabilities of the factory that I was already familiar with, which meant only minor changes were necessary.

Looking ahead, how do you see Puzzle Polyurethane Wall Tile influencing future trends in architectural surface design, particularly in the context of contemporary interior spaces?

Applying Puzzle breaks up any notion of a 'boring' space and offers so many possibilities to create your own distinctive interior style, which is a more and more essential requirement and trend in design.
