- Unique Properties
- SkyRig aims to replace the existing oil rigs in water with three high rise modular structures to provide housing, retail, commercial, and public amenities. The complex will provide equitable, reliable, and sustainable living in the downtown area while referencing the city’s past in the oil industry. Using wind, solar, water, and biomass to generate energy, water, and food, the towers will provide a circular lifestyle with net zero operation carbon.
- Dimensions & Packaging
- 40 floors to provide 1280 affordable units for work and live. 9000m2 of outdoor green space for the community.

- Production Technology
- Modular construction is set to transform an oil rig into a sustainable building with a unique garden that will extend from below water level up to 40 levels high. This innovative project promises to be a game-changer in the construction industry as it offers an eco-friendly alternative to traditional building methods. The modular construction approach involves the use of pre-fabricated modules, which are assembled on-site to create a fully functional building. This method not only reduces construction time but also minimizes waste and lowers carbon emissions. The garden, which will be integrated into the building's design, will provide a natural oasis in the midst of the urban landscape. The project is an exciting example of how creativity and innovation can transform existing structures into sustainable, functional, and beautiful spaces that benefit both people and the environment.
- Design Challenge
- Lagos, one of the largest cities in Nigeria, has been facing an urban sprawl issue due to its rapidly growing population. As a result, there is a need for innovative solutions to tackle this issue and ensure the efficient use of land and resources. One potential solution is the use of high-rise buildings, which can offer a more sustainable and space-efficient alternative to traditional low-rise developments. By replacing old oil rigs with modern high-rise buildings, Lagos can not only reduce its urban sprawl but also create an iconic symbol of sustainability for the city. High-rise buildings can be designed to meet high environmental standards by incorporating features such as energy-efficient systems, green roofs, and renewable energy sources. In addition, these buildings can provide a range of amenities for residents, including shops, restaurants, and public spaces. The use of high-rise buildings in Lagos can therefore be a win-win solution for the city's urban sprawl issue and its sustainability goals.
- Research
- The increasing threat of rising sea levels has become a major concern for many coastal cities around the world, with New York being no exception. As a result, architects and designers are exploring new and innovative solutions to futureproof our communities against the potential impact of climate change. One such solution is the amphibian design, which could offer a promising way to adapt to the changing environment. This design concept is inspired by the ability of amphibians to live both on land and in water, and involves creating buildings that can function in a similar way. By incorporating features such as floating foundations, water tight seals, and amphibious vehicles, these buildings can adapt to rising water levels and remain functional during flooding events. The amphibian design could be a crucial tool in the fight against the impact of climate change, and may help to ensure the long term sustainability of coastal cities like New York.
- Inspiration
- Lagos, Nigeria is the most populated megacity in Africa with 15.4 million people. As the city grows in low density fashion, the quality of living has not improved with more equitable public amenities and infrastructure. The Lagos Lagoon on the other hand is a signature waterfront for its CBD but is currently filled with oil rig and tanks. Sky Rig retrofits these structures. Existing communities can benefit from better open spaces, greenery, renewable energy, sanitation, and communal spaces.
- Project Duration
- Lagos, Nigeria
- Operation Flow
- Oil rigs are massive structures that have a foundation that lands at the bottom of the sea. Therefore, any conversion or transformation of these structures will require a unique approach. The result can be a unique and exciting space that combines functionality with creativity, and provides a new way to use existing structures in an environmentally-friendly way.
