Design Legend Interview

13 Froen

My career was launched as an Interior Designer. After 4 years, of course, I graduated from Bahcesehir University Faculty of Architecture, majoring in Interior Architecture & Environmental Design.

Could you please tell us a bit about your design background and education?

My career was launched as an Interior Designer. After 4 years, of course, I graduated from Bahcesehir University Faculty of Architecture, majoring in Interior Architecture & Environmental Design. While completing my degree I worked both in design offices & construction sites. In order to have a broader perspective, I studied on other design fields like furniture design, sustainable design & exhibit design. Then decided to further my education by following my passion for yachts & completed my masters in yacht design, at Politecnico the Milano. I worked as a yacht designer in Milan for a while and had a chance to get involved spectacular yacht design projects.I decided to pause my career in order to get some experience onboard. Joined to Maritime Faculty, and about to take my Yacht Captain license. I will get onboard for some real-life experience this summer!

What motivates you to design in general, why did you become a designer?

When I am connected to something I immediately see a visual or series of images that are tied to a feeling, emotion or a memory, they are all connected to the design. This is one of the reasons why I wanted to do something visual.

What makes a good design a really good design, how do you evaluate good design?

Probably, we should evaluate things on the basis of emotions and experiences. How it interacts with the user? The greatness of a product should be determined by service.

What would you design and who would you design for if you had the time?

A Summer House, for myself! I have this idea for a while. I have a crystal clear vision of how I want it to be, so just waiting for the right time.

What is your secret recipe of success in design, what is your secret ingredient?

Every design appeals to human. And I believe understanding human behavior and conception should be the first step to create something worthy.

How could people improve themselves to be better designers, what did you do?

It would probably be: worry about every small issue that the user might face, like- how to solve the crew will operate? How to make user on-board happier? How can we make this experience more pleasing? How can we make this process easier?

Who helped you to reach these heights, who was your biggest supporter?

I was raised by three incredibly strong women, who worked hard to support me. I couldn't be happier that I grew up around such inspiring women.

What's your ultimate goal as a designer?

I want to work with companies and individuals that are socially conscious and who are not jumping on the bandwagon but who have led the charge and change. And create together.

What would you like to see changed in design industry in the coming years?

We should stop designing for ourselves or design to prove our worth for other designers. I would be great if we become more human-centered than self-centered.

When you have a new design project, where do you start?

Analyse, examine and research!

Which people you interacted had the most influence on your design?

I am mostly influenced by the user. They are able to look from a totally different perspective than any other designers. So it helps me to usher what I should do, work-wise.

Which books you read had the most effect on your design?

The first thing that pops into my head is: 'Think Like A Freak' by Steven Levitt and Stephen J. Dubner. And Human Dimension & Interior Space. I always keep it on my desk!

How did you develop your skills as a master designer?

I believe every design are tied to designer's experiences, feelings and their perception about life. That's why I feel like I need to change, upgrade and improve continuously. If I am bored of my own product then everybody else will.

I believe it was an exhibition stand dedicated to a company for their newly released product.

What is "design" for you?

Seeking to solve daily problems with empathy.

What was the first thing you designed for a company?

I believe it was an exhibition stand dedicated to a company for their newly released product.

When do you feel the most creative?

The best time of the day for me is in the morning, after having a coffee…

Which aspects of a design do you focus more during designing?

Thinking about the user, all the time.

What makes a design successful?

Level of meaningful interaction with its user/owner.

Where does the design inspiration for your works come from? How do you feed your creativity? What are your sources of inspirations?

From other designer works to furniture stores, a mix of colors or textures, learning about other industries, traveling to foreign countries, having a conversation with foreigners about their day-to-day lifestyle and patterns and so on…My own peers is also a source of inspiration. Even just listening to them, sharing ideas hearing their perspectives on those ideas is a big source of inspiration for me. Shoutout to my dearest friends from my masters class, you know who you are! Recently one of my closest friends recommended me a podcast called ‘Art Café’ that I become addicted shortly after. It is a live talk show in which some of the top artists from around the world to chat candidly about their experiences in the industry.

What are your suggestions to companies for working with a designer? How can companies select a good designer?

To pick someone who does not sit down to work just to get paid and get it off their shoulder as soon as possible. Wanting to finish any design in a hurry without any enthusiasm is a trap that we set for ourselves- In my opinion, it will eventually lead to an unhappy environment.

Can you talk a little about your design process?

Design starts with the owner and understanding their needs. The first step is always to examine and analyze and research. After determining the frame, everything else will come smoothly in order…

Could you please share some pearls of wisdom for young designers? What are your suggestions to young, up and coming designers?

I am also a young designer! I am afraid I don’t have any pearl of wisdom to share… All I can say to my peers is not to be afraid to fail and not to allow anyone to marginalize your dream or idea.Your vision is your vision - it wasn’t given to them. If you have something you want to do, if someone tells you 'no, you can’t do that; it hasn’t been done' or 'you can’t do that because you’re too young, you’re a woman or you’re this ethnicity so you won’t work in this business', ignore them. For me, it just means that I won’t work with them, that’s all. But please don’t get me wrong: If an engineer tells you that this is not feasible, you shouldn’t ignore. Listen to what they say religiously!

What is your "golden rule" in design?

To be human-centered.

Designing can sometimes be a really time consuming task, how do you manage your time?

Over time, I have learned to focus on the things I want to focus on in the time frame that I set. Everyone who knows me knows that I have my black notebook with me all the time to make a list of some of the key tasks I work. Every morning I look back at the list to prioritize my duties and make sure to focus on those tasks on that day.

What are your future plans? What is next for you?

I will do my best & just put it out, that simple...

Do you work as a team, or do you develop your designs yourself?

There are some concept projects that I designed by myself. But in real life, it is usually a team-work which makes the process even more exciting.

Do you have any works-in-progress being designed that you would like to talk about?

Currently, there are two on-going projects that I am working on. One of them is a concept yacht that I am very excited about and the other one is a residential project for a young couple.

How can people contact you?

You can find my contact information on my website, also any of my social media accounts.

Any other things you would like to cover that have not been covered in these questions?

I believe not…Thank you for having me!
