32 Froen

I am a young fashion designer. My passion is street style and ready-to-wear fashion. In my creation, the best result for me is, when people wear my designs.

Could you please tell us a bit about your design background and education?

I am a young fashion designer. My passion is street style and ready-to-wear fashion. In my creation, the best result for me is, when people wear my designs. I studied 4 years high School of aplied art in my hometow in Slovakia, the Fashion design section. Now I am currently studing at College of Fashion in Prague, the Czech republic. It´s postgradual study for 3 years. Now I am in second year of my study here. But after finishing this school, I would like to continue at some Fashion university abroad.

What motivates you to design in general, why did you become a designer?

Beacause I feel, that people need art, beauty and design to be happier in their lifes. Everybody likes to see something new and something what he finds beautiful.

Did you choose to become a designer, or you were forced to become one?

I always wanted to be a fashion designer. It´s my big dream from my childhood and I just try to reach it.

What do you design, what type of designs do you wish to design more of?

I make the fashion illustrations, collages, figure studies and small interior accessories from textile. But the most I like to design clothes.

What should young designers do to become a design legend like you?

I am not a design legend. I am young fashion designer too, and maybe it is cliché, but it works the best. Never give up and try it again.

What makes a good design a really good design, how do you evaluate good design?

Good design is the presence, a really good design is the past, presence and the future. If it is good or really good design we will see after time. Perfect design has to be timeless.

What is the value of good design? Why should everyone invest in good design?

The price is always the same as the customer is willing to pay for concrete design.

What would you design and who would you design for if you had the time?

I would like to make special garment for Johnny Depp.

What is the dream project you haven't yet had time to realize?

Limited edition of socks with unique pattern, which is copying your musles on feet.

Who are some other design masters and legends you get inspired from?

It is a lot of names, so I will write only few. Raf Simons, Heider Ackerman, Viviene Westwood, Demna Gvasalia and the brand Vetements, Karl Lagerfeld, Andy Warhol, Jackson Pollock, Frantisek Kupka and others.

What are your favorite designs by other designers, why do you like them?

I love small black dress designed by Coco Channel. I love them because they are timeless. It is almost one hundred years ago and it´s still trendy, and always be.

What is your greatest design, which aspects of that design makes you think it is great?

I think it is my latest collection - Transformation - BackpackJack and exclusive sweaters and socks. I think this designs are really new, look good, have an idea and concept and they are practical.

How could people improve themselves to be better designers, what did you do?

I don´t know. I think I am better designer because I disscus and consult my works with other people. And of course I always learn on my own mistakes. The more designs, the more mistakes a person makes, so he can learn from them. This moves the designer further.

If you hadn't become a designer, what would you have done?

Maybe I would be actress.

How do you define design, what is design for you?

For me design is the way how I can display myself. Design things makes me happier every day, because they are lovely for my eyes and usefull for my hands. The things what you have around you, in your home or what you wear helps you feel better.

Who helped you to reach these heights, who was your biggest supporter?

My mother.

What helped you to become a great designer?

Great teacher.

How do you think designers should present their work?

To participate in the design competitions is the best way.

What's your next design project, what should we expect from you in future?

I would like to found my own brand and produce my designs to public.

Which design projects gave you the most satisfaction, why?

Designs, that come to real production and people can buy it, afford it and wear it. Because I think every design should fulfill its role and that is the wearability in fashion.

How long does it take you to finalize a design project?

It depends on the complexity of the object. The longest process is to create the right technology and materials. On average I think it can be 2 or 3 months. From an idea to the real prototype is a long way of fitting, thinking and working.

When you have a new design project, where do you start?

I always start with finding inspiration. Inspiration is everywhere, so I just need to let my mind open. It helps, when I am meditating, or walking in nature where is calm and silence. I always take my sketch book with me and then I just draw something. Plants, flowers, view, trees, it doesn´t matter. Just thinking and drawing. When I have an idea I transform it to the garment. I create pattern, technology, shape, practical properties, select materials and create a collection concept.

What is your life motto as a designer?

Let my mind open

What is the role of technology when you design?

Technology has maybe 65% of all design. It is very important and often determines the appearance of the design. Sometimes I have the strict vision, but during the realization I see it doesn´t work. So I have to change material or shape of the garment. And it is everything about technology.

What kind of design software and equipment do you use in your work?

I use mostly Adobe Systems for editing illustrations and preparing documentations, porfolio and other prezentations.

What is the role of the color, materials and ambient in design?

Each designer has some concept of his collection or design and the colour is perfect way how to explain designer´s mood and idea. Colours also have physical role. Through materials and ambient I also catch the concept and include the customer to my idea.

When you see a new great design or product what comes into your mind?

Why did not it come to me before?

Who is your ideal design partner? Do you believe in co-design?

I am currently working alone, but I would like to try to collaborate with someone. I believe that more creative people, can make more creative things together than separately.

Which people you interacted had the most influence on your design?

My teacher and then my close family.

What makes your day great as a designer, how do you motivate yourself?

I love to wake up and go to my atelier. That feel that I can do all things I like and they make me happy. I am motivated with my customers and progress. When I see my designs are succesful and people like it and want it.

When you were a little child, was it obvious that you would become a great designer?

No it wasn´t. Everybody said "It is hard work and earn money as a designer." But I have always had big suport from my mother.

What do you think about future; what do you see will happen in thousand years from now?

People will stop work, walk, eat, talk and their lives will be only virtual.

What kind of emotions do you feel when you design?

I feel some kind of freedom. You can let your mind and imagination be free and put yourself to the something new. It doesn´t matter if it is garment, painting, drawing or furniture. It´s as something is rise from the ash.

Designer should satisfy needs of people and society, with regard to enviroment. If we want to make and enjoy design, we have to be considerate to our nature. But it is a difficult task.

Future of design is absolutely in new technologies. Evolving of materials, computers and visions. On the other side is important to maintain traditions and our cultures. We need to preserve and transfer our heritage to other generations.

Inspiration is everywhere, so I just need to let my mind open. It helps, when I am meditating, or walking in nature where is calm and silence. I try to be connect with nature and draw energy from it. I sketch a lot everytime, so I have all my ideas on the paper. It is

a lot about my curent mood and what I want to share through the collection. Often I visit galleries, check fashion trends and I am interested in other sections of design and art.

How would you describe your design style? What made you explore more this style and what are the main characteristics of your style? What's your approach to design?

I try to work with young people and meet their needs. Through fashion, I display my spirit and attitude to the world, and I want young people to do it too. My style is based on comfort and wearable clothing. Fashion is not just art for me, but also a challenge to incorporate other features into one - visual effect, new design, new idea, originality, comfort and variability. I'm looking for a middle way between a fashionable object and a ready-to-wear garment. A design that is simple but original. Something that is new but inspired by history. It's a long way of discovering art, life, design and me.

Where do you live? Do you feel the cultural heritage of your country affects your designs? What are the pros and cons during designing as a result of living in your country?

I come from a small town in Slovakia, but I live and study in Prague, in the Czech republic. Here are more oportunities for my work and better up-country than in Slovakia. Of course, both have beautiful culture heritage. When I am in Prague I draw the inspiration from multicultural place, people and architecture. When I am at home in Slovakia, my source of inspiration is nature, mountains and calm. Different places, different designs and the best result.

What are your suggestions to companies for working with a designer? How can companies select a good designer?

Companies should not be afraid to collaborate with designers. Good design can increase the production and the company's productivity.

It not only about good or bad designer, but it is also about putting the right product on the market at the right time. If it is good or bad designer, companies have to try out.

Can you talk a little about your design process?

I always start with finding inspiration. Inspiration is everywhere, so I just need to let my mind open. It helps, when I am meditating, or walking in nature where is calm and silence. I always take my sketch book with me and then I just draw something. Plants, flowers, view, trees, it doesn´t matter. Just thinking and drawing. When I have an idea I transform it to the garment. I create pattern, technology, shape, practical properties, select materials and create a collection concept. Then I continue to the realization. I drape and fit on a figure or model, I look at proportions and fine the details. The rest is sewing by hand or by machine.

What are 5 of your favorite design items at home?

Every day I use a Gustav Klimpt porcelain cup. Then there is my linocut, Callendar from my friend artist "Neznamy", with his graphics, Handmade choker from silver and ebony wood from my friend Majda and own production jacket in wardrobe.

I feel to be gifted, to do the work of designer. I love to make things by hand and know there is someone who will be happy with it. It is beautiful to see people like they enjoy and wear my designs and this unrecognizable feeling is why I am doing it.

The negative is, that many designers and artists are under big pressure and often have to work with many restrictions. Because of clients, companies, business and many other things.

What is your "golden rule" in design?

Let my mind open.

What skills are most important for a designer?

Endurance, creativity, mettle, flexibility, positivity, courage, tolerance, humility and never give up.

Which tools do you use during design? What is inside your toolbox? Such as software, application, hardware, books, sources of inspiration etc.?

My sketchbook and pencils are always with me, you never know where you can get the best idea. Then I work a lot in my laptop, for research. And of course needle, thread, sccisors and pins everywhere.

Designing can sometimes be a really time consuming task, how do you manage your time?

Sometimes it's really hard to manage your time. I'm trying to work and distribute my time. But before the deadline, I'm always in a hurry.

It depends on the complexity of the object. The longest process is to create the right technology and materials. On average I think it can be 2 months. From an idea to the real prototype is a long way of fitting, thinking and working.

Where should I wear it?

What type of design work do you enjoy the most and why?

I absolutely love design fashion. For me it is the best way how I can show my attitude, my opinions, my art. And the best thing for me is, when people can wear it and use it.

What are your future plans? What is next for you?

I would like to stay in Fashion design and continue studying at University abroad.

Do you work as a team, or do you develop your designs yourself?

I work and suggest myself, but I often consult my sketches with other people, because it is important for me to have a different view. I try to consult with people in the fashion industry and on the other hand with people from another section. They have different opinions, everytime. I am averaging them and trying to develop the design in the best way
