Our firm offers services including general architectural- and interior design plans; we provide complete solutions from conceptual design to construction phases.

Could you please tell us about your experience as a designer, artist, architect or creator?

Our firm offers services including general architectural- and interior design plans; we provide complete solutions from conceptual design to construction phases. Our aim is not only to offer perfect engineering services but also to satisfy our clients with the highest quality designs. In our studio the dreams of our commissioners can be embodied in especially unique buildings. The designer of the individual atmosphere of our creations is PETER BORDAS, founder and lead architect of BORD Studio, registered member with the Chamber of Hungarian Architects. A highly qualified, dynamic and creative team of architects and experienced engineers are liable for the precise, remarkably high level of services. We have an own team of mechanical engineers to guarantee sustainable design in our projects.

How did you become a designer?

In fact I never had the intention to become one! As a child I started to draw my own house, and then I was told I can design it for real only in case I am an architect. My one and only goal was this and I planned to choose another profession after achieving it. Even when I started the Faculty of Architecture the possibility to design something for others seemed completely indifferent to me.

What are your priorities, technique and style when designing?

All our projects have a different story, a guideline which provides a unique narrative or choreography for the building. This determines the concept, the main spatial system or the shape and volume. The story personalizes the design. Another main aspect which we are extremely interested in is the connection between interior and exterior. Our current projects vary from leisure and sport facilities, industrial buildings to offices and housing projects. I wish more multifunctional projects - the more complex needs it has to meet, the better for us. We like the challanges in such projects.Architecture - or design in general - depends mostly on psychology. If you are sensitive to the people you design for, then you are less likely to make mistakes.

What is your day to day look like?

The main motivation for me stands in the community of our studio. It might sound stereotypical, but keeping in pace all the collegues and maintain their well-being is the most important goal for every day.

How do you keep up with latest design trends? To what extent do design trends matter?

In the field of architecture a global design language is used nowadays. Developed and maintained by the quick global flow of information it is uniformed and less sensitive than it should be. I believe that the future of architecture is based on the individual needs of smaller communities, instead of the global design language used by everyone at the moment.

What is your biggest design work?

We have a few projects in parallel at the moment, however the biggest is the National Skating Centre of Hungary. It is a multifunctional facility with ice surfaces, swimming pool, offices and hotel on several floors. This complexity makes it really interesting for us. The sports complex has to be eligible for national and international competitions and serve as a home for several sports from figure skating to hockey, while it also has to be suitable for public skating. A sports hotel, a restaurant, a conference room, retail areas and a swimming pool are also integrated in the plans. From the earliest stage of the planning process, we searched for a concept, which is like Ariadne’s thread, leading and guiding us through the design process. The ice skating rink that is surrounded by the stands basically determines and organizes the floor plan of the building. This elliptical shape appeared to us as a pond on the plans from the beginning of the design process. In our concept, we intended to ‘freeze’ this water into a building mass. With this approach, we were able to create the perfect impression of an iceberg as the key design concept.

Would you tell us more about your work culture and business philosophy?

In our studio, all our architects are design partners. Everyone feels the project and the design their own and I think it is very important. However there are a few collegues considered as members of a group, called 'lifebelt', each able to substitute me in specific fields and decisions, supervising all the actual projects. Development happens through our projects: we work on them and after they are built, we can learn the consequences. The more experience we have, the closer we get to the truth.

What positive experiences you had when you attend the A' Design Award?

Actually our first project to win an award at A'Design Award&Competitionis Moonvalley vinery, as one of our earliest remarkable project. Several years passed since then, but the design proved its lasting values - not only by its capability to function, but also by being enrolled as a winner project. This feedback is very important to our whole studio.

In fact I never had the intention to become one! As a child I started to draw my own house, and then I was told I can design it for real only in case I am an architect.

What motivates you to design in general, why did you become a designer?

In fact I never had the intention to become one! As a child I started to draw my own house, and then I was told I can design it for real only in case I am an architect. My one and only goal was this and I planned to choose another profession after achieving it. Even when I started the Faculty of Architecture the possibility to design something for others seemed completely indifferent to me.

Did you choose to become a designer, or you were forced to become one?

Nor did I really choose, neither was forced - I started studying arcitecture only to design my own house, and then wanted to start something else. I decided only later that I really want to do this for my life.

What do you design, what type of designs do you wish to design more of?

Our current projects vary from leisure and sport facilities, industrial buildings to offices and housing projects. I wish more multifunctional projects - the more complex needs it has to meet, the better for us. We like the challanges in such projects.

What distinguishes between a good designer and a great designer?

The key is our sense of responsibility: as an architect it is crucial, as our design determine people's everyday life for decades. You can hang a painting into an other room, but what can you do with the room itself...?

What is the dream project you haven't yet had time to realize?

Large-scale cultural buildings would be a dream to come true due to its complexity and communal aspects.

What is your secret recipe of success in design, what is your secret ingredient?

All our projects have a different story, a guideline which provides a unique narrative or choreography for the building. This determines the concept, the main spatial system or the shape and volume. The story personalizes the design.

What were the obstacles you faced before becoming a design master?

As a young designer in my twenties, starting with our studio it was a big challange to compete with noted architects and larger studios for the projects. This was the most difficult of all.

What are you currently working on that you are especially excited about?

We have a few projects in parallel, however the biggest is the National Skating Centre of Hungary. It is a multifunctional facility with ice surfaces, swimming pool, offices and hotel on several floors. This complexity makes it really interesting for us.

What would you like to see changed in design industry in the coming years?

In the field of architecture a global design language is used nowadays. Developed and maintained by the quick global flow of information it is uniformed and less sensitive than it should be.

Where do you think the design field is headed next?

I believe that the future of architecture is based on the individual needs of smaller communities, instead of the global design language used by everyone at the moment.

How long does it take you to finalize a design project?

As an architect it is quite a long term - 2 or 3 years usually, from the first concept till the clients start using it.

What is your life motto as a designer?

Architecture - or design in general - depends mostly on psychology. If you are sensitive to the people you design for, then you are less likely to make mistakes.

What is the role of technology when you design?

Technology and architecture are now closely related fields. Therefore we pursue honesty in our designs revealing technology and hide it as less as possible as it is a legit part of a building today. We design from the very beginning this way - starting from the A'Design Awarded Moonvalley winery.

Who is your ideal design partner? Do you believe in co-design?

In our studio, all our architects are design partners. Everyone feels the project and the design their own and I think it is very important. However there are a few collegues considered as members of a group, called 'lifebelt', each able to substitute me in specific fields and decisions, supervising all the actual projects.

How did you develop your skills as a master designer?

Development happens through our projects: we work on them and after they are built, we can learn the consequences. The more experience we have, the closer we get to the truth.

What makes your day great as a designer, how do you motivate yourself?

The main motivation for me stands in the community of our studio. It might sound stereotypical, but keeping in pace all the collegues and maintain their well-being is the most important goal for every day.

When you were a little child, was it obvious that you would become a great designer?

From the age of 10, I passionately started to design my own house. However I never thought I might become an architect and design for others than myself. Even when I started studying architecture, I was convinced I was going to do my own house and then choose another profession.

Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer?

In fact I never had the intention to become one! As a child I started to draw my own house, and then I was told I can design it for real only in case I am an architect. My one and only goal was this and I planned to choose another profession after achieving it. Can you tell us more about your company / design studio?

Our firm offers services including general architectural- and interior design plans; we provide complete solutions from conceptual design to construction phases. In our studio the dreams of our commissioners can be embodied in especially unique buildings. A highly qualified, dynamic and creative team of architects and experienced engineers are liable for the precise, remarkably high level of services. We have an own team of mechanical engineers to guarantee sustainable design in our projects.

What is your most favorite design, could you please tell more about it?

It is Villányi Resort Hotel - a hospitality building in one of the most important wine producing regions of Hungary. However it hadn't been realized, it was the first project, in which we started to experiment how interior and exterior can be connected - or in other worlds how can we finish an inner space outside the building. Since then, this problem became one of the main questions for our studio.

What was the first thing you designed for a company?

Actually it was Moonvalley winery, our first project to win an award at A'Design Award&Competition. Several years passed since then, but the design proved its lasting values - not only by its capability to function, but also by being enrolled as a winner project.

Which aspects of a design do you focus more during designing?

All our projects have a different story, a guideline which provides a unique narrative or choreography for the building. This determines the concept, the main spatial system or the shape and volume. The story personalizes the design. Another main aspect which we are extremely interested in is the connection between interior and exterior.

What makes a design successful?

All the clients asks for something new, however, deep down in their hearts they long for harmony and balance. When we design, sooner or later we know that it will be good. The hard part is to convince them in advance, before they could see it with their own eyes. It would be much easier to show the result in advance...

From your point of view, what are the responsibilities of a designer for society and environment?

Modernism forced a global and uniformed architectural language, however in their souls people are preserving the traditions. Communities have their own milieau, which should be respected and integrated into the design instead of eliminating from it.

How do you think the "design field" is evolving? What is the future of design?

I believe that the future of architecture is based on the individual needs of smaller communities, instead of the global design language used by everyone at the moment.

What is your "golden rule" in design?

The key is our sense of responsibility: as an architect it is crucial, as our design determine people's everyday life for decades. You can hang a painting into an other room, but what can you do with the room itself...?

What skills are most important for a designer?

Architecture - or design in general - depends mostly on psychology. If you are sensitive to the people you design for, then you are less likely to make mistakes.

Designing can sometimes be a really time consuming task, how do you manage your time?

There are a few collegues in our studio considered as members of a group, called 'lifebelt', each able to substitute me in specific fields and decisions, supervising all the actual projects.

How long does it take to design an object from beginning to end?

Varies usually from 2 to 3 years from the first concept until the moment the client can move into the completed house. Building takes time.

Who are some of your clients?

Our current projects vary from leisure and sport facilities, industrial buildings to offices and housing projects.

What type of design work do you enjoy the most and why?

We like multifunctional projects the most - the more complex needs it has to meet, the better for us. We like the challanges in such projects.

Do you work as a team, or do you develop your designs yourself?

In our studio, all our architects are design partners. Everyone feels the project and the design their own and I think it is very important.

Do you have any works-in-progress being designed that you would like to talk about?

We have a few projects in parallel, however the biggest is the National Skating Centre of Hungary. It is a multifunctional facility with ice surfaces, swimming pool, offices and hotel on several floors. This complexity makes it really interesting for us.

How can people contact you?

We are present in three locations. Our office is based in Budapest, Hungary, but we have a studio in Debrecen, Eastern Hungary and last year we opened another one in Zürich, Switzerland. The easiest way to contact us is through our website: http://www.bordstudio.hu/.
