Being born in a country vastly rich in culture and art has had a major influence on my inclination towards design. Since a very young age, I knew that I was going to be in the design industry, especially shoes.

Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer?

Being born in a country vastly rich in culture and art has had a major influence on my inclination towards design. Since a very young age, I knew that I was going to be in the design industry, especially shoes. However, my love for gemstones and colour drove me towards Jewellery and I went on to pursue my Graduate gemmologist degree at the renowned Gemmological Institute of America, New York. I have a very strong bond and love for nature and animals and they have majorly influenced my designs. As a person I am drawn towards things that are unique & trendsetting and the same characteristics can be seen in my designs. All the pieces are bold, inspired and bespoke.

Can you tell us more about your company / design studio?

My company was established in 2016 after I completed by Gemology at GIA, New York. My design studio ‘Pavit Gujral Designs’ is based in Dubai Design District, Dubai. One can visit by appointment and have a customised experience. We strive to create bespoke, trendsetting jewelry pieces of the highest quality.

What is "design" for you?

Design is Emotions. I am a person who feels deeply and my emotions inspire me to create designs. Each piece that I create has a memory, a story and feelings I felt in that moment.

What kinds of works do you like designing most?

Nature and Animals are my biggest inspiration and I love creating pieces that are playful & colorful and speak to you. I like every piece to be unique, trendsetting and bold. Being a Gemologist, rare and unique colored stones are my biggest focus while designing. All my pieces have a lot of attention to detail and finish.

What is your most favorite design, could you please tell more about it?

My favorite piece is the ‘Crab’ Earrings. They are among my favorite pieces which I enjoyed creating. The award-winning Crab Earrings have been set in 18K Gold with over 800 pieces of Orange Sapphires, Pink Sapphires, Yellow Sapphires and Rubies creating an ombre effect. The piece is finished with beautiful deep blue heart brilliant Tanzanites and round brilliant Diamonds. As totems, Crabs are symbols of intuitive nature, perseverance, self-sufficient behaviour and sensitivity! The earrings are very dynamic and display movement due to the setting technique. The Crabs are balancing beautiful Tanzanite hearts with their claws!

Recently in the month of February 2023, the “Crab Earrings” won the WINNER in the category “High Jewelry of the Year” at the most prestigious award in Europe, INHORGENTA AWARD 2023 in Munich.

What was the first thing you designed for a company?

“The Hummingbird” Necklace was the first piece that I ever manufactured inspired from the Hummingbird’s wings. The Award-Winning Necklace has been set in 18K Gold with Rubies on one wing and Diamonds on the other. Both the wings meet at the beautiful centre stone, a 25.74cts oval brilliant Kunzite, flanked by trillion Rubies. Seen as healers and bringers of love, good luck and joy, Hummingbirds reflect the positive side of life by showing you the joy in small things. The Hummingbird puts an emphasis on the importance of honouring the small things in life! The Hummingbird is tireless in its pursuit of finding sweetness and reminds you to not let obstacles stop you from making your dreams come true. Their iridescence is just magical! The beautiful bird is also a part of my brand and logo for the same reasons.

What is your favorite material / platform / technology?

Being a gemologist, I love gemstones that are rare, rich and colourful, regardless of their value. I have a special inclination towards phenomenal gemstones; those that portray some kind of special characteristics due to their chemical compositions or inclusions, such as colour change in alexandrite and play of colour in opal. All my pieces are created in 18K and each stone is set by hand. Because I love pavé setting, some of my pieces even have over 4000 set by hand!

When do you feel the most creative?

I feel the most creative when I travel. When I see new horizons, new creatures, the wonders of marine life and nature’s phenomenon. I believe travel removes us from our usual ranges of familiarity and rouses us to see, taste and attempt new things. It continually challenges us, not exclusively to adjust to and investigate new environmental elements, yet in addition to draw in with various individuals, to embrace undertakings really to impart new and significant encounters to companions and friends and family. Travelling has inspired many of my designs, such as the ‘Iceberg Collection’ is inspired from my trip to Finland, the ‘Twilight Collection’ is inspired from a breathtaking view of the twilight sky in Canada and the Award-winning ‘Tuscany’ earrings also been inspired from my summer trip to the beautiful Italian town of Tuscany.

Which aspects of a design do you focus more during designing?

My designs are inspired from Nature's bounty and beauty. Every piece tells a story. Along with this, Mixology of Colour spectrum, my Love for Exotic Gemstones, Profound connection with the Animal Kingdom and Beauty in Randomness of Shapes are the aspects kept in mind while designing.

What kind of emotions do you feel when you design?

Happy, inspired and lively.

What kind of emotions do you feel when your designs are realized?

I feel elated and triumphant. A lot of effort goes into bringing a piece to life, sourcing the ideal stones and overcoming certain challenges. With each piece that I create, comes a new learning!

What makes a design successful?

I feel as long as you’re true to your design and create a truly bold and inspired piece, without fearing the outcome of it being liked, is when a design is successful. The piece should speak to you! And of course, the piece should be flawless and comfortable to wear.

From your point of view, what are the responsibilities of a designer for society and environment?

Firstly, it is very important that my designs make the wearer feel confident and happy, regardless of their nationality, age or gender. Just because a piece is bold, doesn’t mean it is only for young people or some flamboyant personality! All the gemstones sourced should be conflict free.

How do you think the "design field" is evolving? What is the future of design?

I think people are expressing more freely now, without fearing what the society might think! Our lives and emotions are surely becoming more complex and people are finding ways to express themselves beautifully by creating art!

How would you describe your design style? What made you explore more this style and what are the main characteristics of your style? What's your approach to design?

I have five essential elements which describe my design style. Mixology of colour spectrum, Love for exotic gemstones, Inspired by nature’s bounty and beauty, profound connection with the animal kingdom and beauty in randomness of shapes. My approach has always been bold, bespoke and opulent.

Where do you live? Do you feel the cultural heritage of your country affects your designs? What are the pros and cons during designing as a result of living in your country?

I am based out in Dubai, however, I am from India. Born in Calcutta, and raised in Chandigarh, I had exposure to two completely different and unique cultures. Calcutta is all about art, history, and chaos, whereas Chandigarh is a relatively modern and well-planned city. Both cities have played an important role in inculcating my interest in art and design.

Could you please share some pearls of wisdom for young designers? What are your suggestions to young, up and coming designers?

Be Bold. Don’t follow the trend. Just design what comes to mind. Following a trend will never allow you to have your own style.

What is your "golden rule" in design?

Be bold and honest in your expression of design.

How long does it take to design an object from beginning to end?

It really depends upon the complexity of the design. It can vary from 8-12 weeks.

Do you work as a team, or do you develop your designs yourself?

I develop my designs myself. I am the CEO and head designer of my company "Pavit Gujral Designs".

Do you have any works-in-progress being designed that you would like to talk about?

Moving to Dubai and the Middle East has inspired me to work on a collection based on the Arab World. I am conceptualizing the new collection by taking inspiration from the Arab culture, colors, scripture, topography, animals, and, of course, the desert!

Starfish Collection Ko Te Whakapaipai Pai · 10 pātai

The creative journey for the Starfish Collection began with my love for the ocean and the diversity of marine life. As a scuba diver, I’ve encountered numerous starfish, each with unique patterns and hues.

Your innovative approach to capturing marine life in the Starfish Collection Fine Jewelry, particularly through the integration of over 4,000 precious stones, is remarkable - could you share the creative journey that led to this intricate combination of Orange Sapphires, Garnets, and Diamonds?

The creative journey for the Starfish Collection began with my love for the ocean and the diversity of marine life. As a scuba diver, I’ve encountered numerous starfish, each with unique patterns and hues. This inspired me to replicate their individuality through a vibrant palette of Orange Sapphires, Pink Sapphires, Rubies, and Tsavorite Garnets. These stones were thoughtfully chosen to reflect the rich colors and textures of starfish I observed underwater. The addition of Diamonds and Tahitian Pearls added an ethereal touch, elevating the design to fine jewelry artistry.

The shell-shaped clasp design in the Starfish Collection Fine Jewelry demonstrates exceptional attention to detail - what inspired this specific design element, and how does it contribute to both the functionality and artistic narrative of the collection?

The shell-shaped clasp was inspired by the ocean’s holistic beauty and serves as a nod to the marine world that the collection celebrates. Functionally, it provides a seamless and secure closure that integrates into the piece without disrupting its aesthetic flow. Artistically, the shell design complements the starfish motif, creating a cohesive marine narrative. By mimicking natural elements, the clasp becomes an extension of the jewelry's story, symbolizing the interconnectedness of marine life.

Your experience as a certified scuba diver clearly influenced the Starfish Collection Fine Jewelry - how did your underwater encounters in the Andaman Islands shape the anatomical accuracy and artistic interpretation of these marine creatures in your designs?

Diving in the Andaman Islands provided an intimate view of the details and behaviors of starfish in their natural habitat. Observing their vivid colors, textures, and unique patterns inspired me to recreate their anatomical precision in my designs. The Starfish Collection translates these observations into wearable art, emphasizing the organic curves and natural symmetry of starfish. My goal was to honor their beauty while adding an artistic flair, capturing their essence through the vibrant gemstones and fluid design.

The Starfish Collection Fine Jewelry showcases an impressive technical achievement in welding one starfish onto another - could you elaborate on the engineering challenges you faced and the innovative solutions you developed to achieve this seamless connection?

Creating the seamless connection between the starfish components was a challenging feat that required innovative craftsmanship. Each starfish was individually constructed and welded together using jump rings, to add an element of movement and flexibility to the design. While achieving a natural and harmonious flow, it was also critical to maintain the structural integrity of the piece. One of the major challenges was the correct selection and placement of the gemstones, ensuring the palette mirrors the natural diversity and individuality of starfish.

The color palette of the Starfish Collection Fine Jewelry features a sophisticated combination of precious stones - what guided your selection process for these specific gemstones, and how do they reflect the natural diversity of starfish you observed while diving?

The gemstone selection for our Starfish Collection was guided by the intricate patterns of each starfish I observed underwater. Orange and Pink Sapphires were chosen to reflect their bright, sunlit colors, while Rubies and Tsavorite Garnets highlighted their deeper, richer tones. Additionally, the Diamonds and Tahitian Pearls represent the shimmering underwater light. Each gemstone was handpicked not only for its color but also for its ability to complement the design's narrative. By combining this vibrant palette of gemstones, the collection captures the interplay of light and color beneath the waves.

The Starfish Collection Fine Jewelry represents a significant five-month production journey from concept to completion - could you walk us through the most pivotal moments in translating your underwater observations into wearable art?

The journey began with sketching designs for the collection, which was an integral step to ensure anatomical accuracy and artistic elegance. The selection and placement of over 4,000 gemstones was another crucial phase, requiring weeks of thorough planning to achieve the perfect color depiction and texture. The next step was to engineer the seamless connection of starfish components, ensuring the design remained fluid and structurally sound. Finally, crafting the shell-shaped clasp to complement the marine theme marked the completion of the design, tying together form, function, and narrative into a cohesive masterpiece.

As a designer who aims to be the 'Popstar' of the Fine Jewelry industry, how does the Starfish Collection Fine Jewelry embody your vision of creating trendsetting pieces that challenge traditional jewelry design conventions?

The Starfish Collection embodies my vision by merging bold creativity with technical innovation, setting a new standard for high jewelry design. The use of a wide variety of gemstones to create lifelike marine motifs is a departure from traditional jewelry aesthetics, showcasing a fearless embrace of color and form. The shell-shaped clasp and intricate starfish connections further challenge conventions, blending art and functionality seamlessly. By drawing inspiration from marine life and translating it into a unique narrative, the collection represents a trendsetting approach that appeals to enthusiasts seeking jewelry that is as imaginative as it is exquisite.

The Starfish Collection Fine Jewelry earned recognition with the Silver A' Design Award - how has this international acknowledgment influenced your approach to future marine-inspired collections?

Winning the Silver A' Design Award was an incredible honor that has inspired me to push creative boundaries even further. This recognition reaffirmed my belief in the power of storytelling through jewelry and has motivated me to explore more bold and bespoke designs. It has also expanded the reach of my brand, opening doors to international collaborations and allowing me to connect with a wider audience. For future marine-inspired collections, I plan to continue blending artistry with innovation, ensuring each piece reflects the same passion and commitment to excellence that earned this award.

The meticulous stone-setting process in the Starfish Collection Fine Jewelry involved thousands of individual pieces - what specific techniques or innovations did you develop to ensure each gemstone contributed to the overall marine narrative?

Designing the Starfish Collection challenged me to innovate and refine my techniques to achieve the intricate marine narrative I envisioned. Micro-pavé setting methods were used to ensure a seamless finish to the piece, while mirroring the vivid hues of starfish through the careful selection of Orange Sapphires, Pink Sapphires, Rubies, and Tsavorite Garnets. The Tahitian Pearls added a touch of mystique, symbolizing the ocean's allure and its hidden treasures. My goal was to ensure that every element, from the shimmering colors to the luminous pearls, contributed to telling the story of marine life in a way that felt cohesive and captivating.

Looking at the commercial success of the Starfish Collection Fine Jewelry, how has this collection influenced your brand's direction in creating pieces that balance artistic expression with market appeal?

The success of the Starfish Collection has strengthened my belief that true artistry lies in creating designs that deeply resonate with those who value craftsmanship and storytelling. This collection embodies my vision of meaningful, expressive jewelry that celebrates individuality over mass appeal. It inspires me to continue crafting pieces that speak authentically to an insightful audience, celebrating the beauty of bold and personal expression. Staying true to this philosophy, I aim to explore new themes that evoke emotion and reflect the spirit of individuality through fine jewelry.
