Bam Klein is a sofa inspired by the topological form of the Klein bottle. The seat, backrest and armrests are shaped as one continuous curved surface, so the usual distinction between inside and outside is removed. The internal frame combines engineered wood and reinforced steel, while high resilience foam cushions and fabric upholstery provide ergonomic support. Slender black powder coated steel legs give the sofa a light appearance and keep the structure stable. The single piece construction reduces joint stress and improves durability.

Unique Properties
This project reinterprets the topological Klein bottle into a continuous one-piece curved surface that merges backrest and armrests. The seamless geometry eliminates conventional interior exterior distinctions, redefining furniture boundaries. Its lightweight visual presence, slender metal legs, ergonomic curvature, and structurally balanced framework integrate conceptual innovation with functional stability and refined contemporary aesthetics.
Dimensions & Packaging
This project measures 2400 mm, 950 mm, 720 mm with a seat height of 420 mm and leg height of 180 mm. Its frame combines engineered wood and reinforced steel, cushions are high-resilience foam, and upholstery is premium fabric. Weighing approximately 85 kg with a 300 kg load capacity, it is packaged in protective wrap and reinforced export cartons for safe delivery.

Production Technology
The sofa utilizes precision-molded internal framing to achieve a continuous curved profile. High-resilience polyurethane foam ensures ergonomic support, while premium upholstery enhances tactile comfort. Slender black powder-coated steel legs provide structural reinforcement. The monolithic construction minimizes joint stress, improving durability and load distribution while maintaining formal fluidity.
Design Challenge
The primary challenge was transforming a mathematically infinite surface into a manufacturable and stable structure. Balancing visual lightness with structural integrity required advanced internal framing solutions. Production constraints, material flexibility limits, and ergonomic validation posed technical obstacles. The breakthrough lay in integrating topology, engineering logic, and human comfort within a feasible industrial system.
Project Duration
The project started in April 2025 and finished in August 2025 in China.
Operation Flow
Users interact intuitively by sitting or reclining along the continuous curved surface. The form gently supports the back and arms without rigid edges, encouraging relaxed postures. Elevated by slender legs, the sofa appears light while remaining stable. Its unified structure allows the body to feel embraced yet unrestricted, enhancing comfort and spatial openness.
Research
This interdisciplinary research translated topological concepts into ergonomic furniture using geometry analysis, parametric modeling, Cad prototyping, and comfort testing. User trials validated curvature support and structural balance, demonstrating that mathematical abstraction can enhance both comfort and aesthetic appeal, providing insights that influence contemporary furniture design and commercial differentiation.
Inspiration
The design draws inspiration from the Klein bottle's infinite surface, where inside and outside merge into a continuous entity. This topological paradox inspired an exploration of spatial continuity in furniture. Motivated by interdisciplinary integration between mathematics and product design, the project transforms abstract geometry into ergonomic form, redefining how the human body engages with domestic space.
