Cornerstone is an art gallery interior located in Taichung, Taiwan, with an area of 36 square meters. The main finish is a traditional clay plaster made of red clay, rice straw and glutinous rice, which helps regulate indoor humidity and temperature. A curved red clay wall guides visitors through the space. A circular aperture of 75 centimeters in diameter was cut into the floor slab above and fitted with a conical steel fixture to bring daylight deep into the interior. Patinated steel shelves are adjustable and removable for changing exhibitions.

Unique Properties
This project challenges that convention by utilizing sustainable Earth-based materials as the spatial centerpiece. The primary finish is a traditional clay plaster composed of red clay, rice straw, and glutinous rice. This bio-composite not only anchors the aesthetic but also naturally regulates indoor humidity and temperature, significantly enhancing the building's energy efficiency and environmental performance.

Production Technology
The palette centers on raw, tactile materials: Red Clay Plaster, Patinated Steel, and Resin Mortar Flooring.
Design Challenge
The site is situated within a narrow 5-meter alley, flanked by adjacent buildings that restrict natural light to a brief morning window. To overcome this, a 75cm diameter circular aperture was precision-cut into the floor slab, into which a conical steel fixture was embedded to funnel daylight deep into the interior. Due to the extreme spatial constraints, heavy machinery was inaccessible; thus, the installation and securing of all structural steel components required meticulous manual suspension and manual rigging techniques.
Project Duration
The project was initiated in January 2024 in Taichung, Taiwan, and reached completion in December 2024.
Operation Flow
Beneath the circular skylight at the upper-left entrance, a stone sculpture is strategically positioned to bridge the gap between the neighborhood and the visitors, fostering an immediate and tactile connection with the artwork.
Research
To preserve the pristine state of the unrepairable clay walls, all hanging points were meticulously calculated and pre-installed with iron hardware. To ensure long-term versatility, the patinated steel shelves are fully adjustable and removable, providing a dynamic display system that evolves with each exhibition.
Inspiration
"A gentle breeze passes, sunlight trickles down; a ritualistic ascent that feels like retreating into a secluded valley."
A strategic skylight functions as a natural spotlight, focusing brilliance directly onto the sculptures.
The visitor is enveloped by a curved red clay wall, A solid wood counter seamlessly integrates consultation with curated exhibition, while timber louvered doors provide a semi-permeable boundary that extends the visual horizon into the private quarters.
