Indigo Restaurant is a dining and cultural interior located along the Li River in Yangshuo, China. The project contains five zones: a flower garden, a slow dining cafe, a cultural venue, a bakery and a fermented cuisine restaurant. Each zone can operate alone or together. Heritage rules prevented changes to the exterior, so the circulation was reorganized inside. Arches unify the columns of the lower level and guide movement. Gray brick, red patterned brick and indigo tones refer to local dyeing craft. A preserved ancient wall frames the distant mountains.

Unique Properties
Indigo Restaurant's narrative is 'a shifting scene with every step.' The Hundred Flowers Garden welcomes visitors, while framed windows borrow landscape views like ink-wash scrolls. B1's mountain-adjacent columns are unified by rhythmic arches, creating sequential scenery. Red patterned bricks and indigo motifs reflect ethnic craft in a contemporary language. Dining areas balance gray and red tones with indigo accents. Preserved ancient walls frame distant mountains, blending history, culture, and nature into a landmark experience.
Dimensions & Packaging
The project comprises five zones: Hundred Flowers Garden, a slow dining cafe, a cultural & creative venue, a bakery, and a fermented cuisine restaurant, each operable independently yet integrable. Built into the mountainside, B1 columns form rhythmic circulation through arches. The ground level extends to a plaza and an ancient wall, framing distant landscapes. Interior proportions address the narrow, elongated site, enabling smooth circulation and sequential, continuous transitions that evoke the experience of meandering through shifting mountain-and-water scenes.

Production Technology
The palette blends gray brick, white, and red brick tones, creating warmth in dining areas. Indigo, the brand's signature color, appears in furnishings, fabrics, and accents, referencing traditional dyeing. Local materials transform natural grays into layered textures that shift with light. Red patterned bricks and indigo hydrangea motifs express craft and cultural heritage. Together, colors and materials embed regional identity while allowing the space to reveal dynamic qualities throughout the day and night.
Design Challenge
The main challenge was the heritage site's constraints. Located in a UNESCO-protected zone, exterior changes were prohibited, so designers reorganized interior circulation without altering the structure. On B1, fragmented columns were unified through arches to guide movement. The south-side ancient wall, once a neighbor's Feng Shui barrier, sparked debate but was preserved and reframed as a landscape feature, transforming a limitation into a design highlight.
Project Duration
The project finished in May 2025 in Guangxi Province, China.
Operation Flow
Upon completion, Indigo Restaurant became both a cultural hub and a visitor destination. Most praised is the sightline where the preserved south wall aligns with distant mountains, capturing a moment in time. The cafe and restaurant's warm ambiance encourages relaxation, while the Cultural and Creative Pavilion highlights local craft and heritage. Functional integration and visual rhythm create spaciousness, positioning the venue as a leisure and social hub, recognized as a new cultural landmark in Yangshuo.
Research
Located along the Li River, Indigo Restaurant adapts a heritage site, blending local indigo-dye crafts with Yangshuo's landscape. Five zones, the Hundred Flowers Garden, cafe, cultural pavilion, bakery, and fermented cuisine restaurant, operate independently or together, forming a cultural stage. Arched columns unify B1 circulation, red bricks and indigo motifs celebrate ethnic craft, and gray-red-indigo tones create warmth. The preserved ancient wall frames distant mountains, making the venue both functional and a new cultural landmark.
Inspiration
Located on the Li River, a UNESCO World Heritage site, Indigo Restaurant adheres to strict rules allowing no new construction. The client envisioned a multifunctional space combining a Hundred Flowers Garden, a slow-dining cafe, cultural venue, bakery, and fermented cuisine restaurant. Inspired by the proverb 'green is born of blue, yet surpasses blue,' the design reflects local indigo-dyeing craft and Yangshuo's landscapes, linking nature, architecture, and daily life, creating a cultural gateway beyond a typical restaurant.
