Raum is a table top grill designed for outdoor cooking. The grill is made from high grade stainless steel, cut by CNC laser and shaped by press brake bending. A dual shell structure forms a curved base that guides air through side vents and shields the surface below from heat. Charcoal is placed in the inner chamber, and the heat spreads evenly across the cooking grate. The four part modular system is assembled without tools or fasteners and can be taken apart for cleaning. Laser welded joints and a satin finish support long service life.

Unique Properties
Raum is a manifestation of structural purity, crafted from precision-cut stainless steel. It distinguishes itself through a dual-shell architecture: a curved, monolithic base that optimizes airflow while acting as a thermal shield for surfaces. Eschewing conventional fasteners, its modular components allow for tool-free assembly and effortless maintenance. Raum transforms the utilitarian grill into a sculptural centerpiece, balancing industrial durability with sophisticated elegance.

Production Technology
Raum is engineered using high-grade stainless steel, utilizing CNC laser cutting for micron-level dimensional accuracy. The primary chassis is formed through cold rolling and CNC press brake bending, achieving structural rigidity and the signature "monolithic fluidity" without internal skeletons. Assembly features precision laser welding for seamless, invisible joins. The modular components are finished with a uniform grain to enhance corrosion resistance and thermal longevity.
Design Challenge
The core challenge was synthesizing sculptural "monolithic fluidity" with rigorous thermal safety. Developing a single-material chassis that maintains a cool-touch exterior required complex heat-transfer analysis. Externally, navigating the precision bending limits of 2.0mm stainless steel was a significant manufacturing hurdle. Internally, the goal was to counter the social shift toward disposable tools. The solution—a dual-shell architecture—overcame these technical constraints to deliver a permanent, high-performance design.
Project Duration
The Raum project was conceptualized and developed in Ankara, Turkey. The design phase commenced in May 2025, followed by intensive prototyping and material testing. The project reached its final manufacturing and realization stage in July 2025. This three-month cycle encompassed everything from initial airflow simulations to the final precision-machined prototype, representing a streamlined bridge between contemporary Turkish industrial design and high-end manufacturing.
Operation Flow
Using Raum is an intuitive ritual: simply slide the modular pieces together and place charcoal in the inner chamber. The curved body is naturally designed to funnel air through side vents, keeping the heat consistent and intense without constant maintenance. Whether searing meats or vegetables, the heat radiates uniformly for superior culinary results. Once finished, the grill disassembles instantly for effortless cleaning, turning a rugged task into a smooth social experience.
Research
This project utilized Experimental Design Research to optimize portable combustion. The objective was to eliminate the structural failures of traditional grills while maximizing heat efficiency. Using Airflow Dynamics Simulations (CFD) and physical metal-forming experiments, we tested various curvatures on stainless steel. Research involved user-interaction trials with outdoor enthusiasts to analyze thermal safety. Results yielded a dual-shell geometry that reduces coal consumption by 20% and ensures a stable, cool-touch base. This research advances sustainable, long-life product design, offering a durable alternative to disposable outdoor equipment while streamlining manufacturing logistics through modularity.
Inspiration
The inspiration for Raum—the German word for space—stems from a desire to harmonize minimalist aesthetics with the pragmatic demands of functional outdoor cooking. Influenced by the structural honesty of industrial architecture and the precision of machined components, the design centers on the concept of "monolithic fluidity." This approach creates a sense of structural permanence and durability while maintaining a light, clean-lined footprint ideal for contemporary urban living.
The primary motive was to simplify the grilling experience through modularity and efficiency, utilizing a form informed by rigorous research into airflow dynamics and heat distribution to ensure total visual and performance coherence. By synthesizing the raw utility of the hearth with the refined finish of high-end hardware, Raum elevates the "ritual of the flame," successfully bridging the architectural gap between rugged outdoor equipment and the refined elegance of the dining table.
