Vertical Harmony is a residential interior design for a 324 square meter townhouse in Taiwan. The five story layout is arranged as a vertical hierarchy for a three generation family. The first two floors join indoor and outdoor areas through a dual media living room, an integrated kitchen and dining space, folding doors, sunken seating and a lounge bar. Private suites occupy the third and fourth floors, including an accessible senior suite beside the elevator. The top floor serves as a fitness and social area. Mirrors, earth toned materials and landscape stone guide movement.

Unique Properties
This design deconstructs a 5 story layout to create vertical transitions and horizontal continuity. By utilizing mirrors, lighting, and landscape stone, fragmented areas are composed into a ritualized entry sequence. The public zone employs a dual wall strategy with a screen and television to refine functionality, while folding doors soften boundaries to extend interaction onto the terrace. Sunken seating and a lounge bar create a seamless indoor outdoor experience.

Production Technology
The design team establishes an earth toned palette as the visual axis, using material narration to articulate spatial rhythm. On the first floor, mirrored surfaces in the entry foyer counterbalance the compressive effect of the existing black tiles in the garage, while imported lighting enhances the artistic layering of the space. The stairwell employs splashed ink landscape stone with deep texture to guide vertical circulation.
Design Challenge
In terms of lighting, scene based presets are configured for different situations, allowing required lighting conditions to be activated with a single touch. Automated settings are also introduced for heat insulating curtains, enabling the smart system to respond to outdoor daylight conditions and allowing occupants to enjoy a comfortable indoor environment with ease.
Project Duration
The project finished in 2025 in Taiwan.
Operation Flow
The residence features a vertical functional hierarchy. The first two floors merge indoor and outdoor spaces for social interaction through a flexible dual media living room and an integrated kitchen dining layout. The third and fourth floors house private suites including a palette defined master bedroom, personalized children rooms, and an accessible senior suite by the elevator. The top floor serves as a versatile fitness and social hub.
Research
In response to the sensory and physiological needs of a three-generation household, the design emphasizes an inclusive residential experience across all age groups. Clear circulation paths are planned throughout the home to ensure that elderly family members can enjoy equal and safe living conditions within an accommodating environment, while children are provided with spaces that support both exploration and privacy as they grow.
Inspiration
The design begins with reshaping the fundamental dialogue between the residents and the space. Moving away from the framework of a show house, the everyday habits of a three generation family are translated into spatial language, creating a soulful home that responds closely to the needs of each family member.
