Weaving is a residential interior design completed in Taiwan for a family of three generations. Including the balcony, the interior area measures about 83 square meters. The original four-bedroom layout was reconfigured into three bedrooms with an open study and a tatami room. The television wall combines blanc travertine and Moonlight Beige stone along a curved edge that is aligned with the floor joints. The tatami room is built of solid Japanese hinoki with mortise-and-tenon joints and a diamond-pattern woven ceiling. Low cabinets keep the social area open and accessible.

- Unique Properties
- The design unifies diverse 'weaving' of materials. On the TV wall, blanc travertine and Moonlight Beige stone meet along a curved edge extending to the entry, aligned with floor joints for visual rhythm. Metallic-sheen art paint behind the desk echoes stone fossils. Stone veining is intentionally unmatched. Social area storage is low for openness and elderly access. In the tatami room, diamond-pattern amijime ceilings, ranma lattice vents, and circular sliding doors follow the Fibonacci sequence, blending tradition, nature, and craft.
- Dimensions & Packaging
- Including the balcony, the interior area measures about 83 square meters. Originally four bedrooms, a living room, a dining room, and two bathrooms, the layout was reconfigured into three bedrooms plus an open study and tatami room. Bedroom privacy was preserved while enlarging the dining-and-gathering axis of the social area, allowing flexible conversion between daily two-person life and holiday gatherings of over ten people. The study wall was recessed to connect the dining-living lighting; the tatami room sits centrally as a flexible node for rest, movie-watching, or children's play.

- Production Technology
- The tatami room is entirely constructed of solid Japanese first-grade hinoki sourced from managed artificial forests. 3D modeling, precise cutting, and mortise-and-tenon joints replace veneered plywood, preserving the natural scent and tactile warmth of wood. Wood flooring and stone surfaces correspond to each other in modular dimensions and division. The overall color temperature builds on warm gray and wood brown, blanc travertine and moonlight beige stones enhance brightness, and curved edges form a stable yet fluid sense of light layering.
- Design Challenge
- The main challenge was coordinating materials and techniques. The tatami room used first-grade, knot-free hinoki cut to custom modules, with a diamond-weave ceiling built from prototypes and on-site craftsmanship for veneer overlap, tolerances, and hidden maintenance. Stonework required continuous curved spans aligned with floor joints. Non-book-matched veining balanced visual density, ensuring durability, easy cleaning, and refined elegance.
- Project Duration
- The project finished in October 2024 in Taiwan.
- Operation Flow
- After moving in, the family often sits on the tatami by the sliding doors to watch TV, the sofa has become secondary. The desk area serves as a reading and interaction corner for the elders and grandchildren. Visiting friends and photographers have all commented on the space's 'unexpected quietness': though near a busy road, once windows close, only light and the scent of wood remain. The children appreciated the low-cabinet design and simplified storage, which keeps the view uncluttered and gently refines their parents' habit of keeping items-making life feel lighter.
- Research
- Designed for an elderly homeowner and three generations, the 'Weaving' theme transforms the parents' curtain-making craft into spatial rhythm. Wood joinery, stone divisions, and drapery interlace, symbolizing family bonds. The open social area features low cabinets and a TV wall of blanc travertine and Moonlight Beige stone curving to the entry. The tatami room's hinoki ceiling weaves tradition and hidden vents, blending material, light, and air into daily life.
- Inspiration
- The homeowners' children wished to preserve memories of the tatami room from their parents' previous home. Centered on the concept of 'Weaving,' the design interlaces bamboo blinds, wooden flooring, and stone surfaces into a harmonious dialogue of materials, balancing emotion and order. Three-sided daylight and natural ventilation enhance comfort, while the open social area supports daily life and family gatherings. Barrier-free design ensures accessibility, blending tradition with practicality.
