I was studying my bachelor of interior design degree in Queensland University of Technology where I found my passion in the world of interior design. I have been working as an interior designer for many years and I am still feel excited about my work .

My most favourites work is hotel design as it is fun, exciting and challenging and it can bring so much to a lot of people.

My most favorite design is Four Point Hotel in Chang-Chun, China. I spent my time and my heart in the concept design and design development. I had good collaboration with clients and they are very happy for the result.

The pitched ceiling with exposed timber beams became the conceptual backbone of the Dream Villa Residential House. Once we decided to reveal the structural rhythm of the beams, the entire design philosophy shifted toward celebrating openness, honesty, and material integrity.The exposed beams create a strong axial direction that guides movement and draws the eye naturally through the living and kitchen areas. This visual framework encouraged us to keep the plan open and continuous, allowing light, proportion, and symmetry to take the lead. We designed the interiors to echo this architectural clarity—through vertical lines, refined paneling, and a calm, cohesive palette that amplifies the height of the space.The timber beams also introduced a tactile warmth, which shaped our material strategy. Every finish—from soft textiles to stone surfaces—was selected to complement the organic character of the wood. The result is a home that feels expansive yet grounded, modern yet deeply connected to natural texture.In essence, the pitched-beam ceiling didn’t just influence the project; it defined its atmosphere. It set the tone for a design language that is airy, structured, and emotionally resonant, turning the architecture itself into the primary storyteller of the space.

The design of the Dream Villa Residential House began with a deep appreciation for the warmth and emotional familiarity of farmhouse aesthetics—exposed structures, honest materials, and a sense of lived-in comfort. At the same time, the homeowners envisioned a space that offered modern luxury, refined detailing, and a sense of architectural grandeur. Blending the two became a natural design direction: a way to honor tradition while elevating everyday living.The farmhouse influence appears in the pitched ceiling, exposed timber beams, and the tactile material palette. These elements ground the home with a sense of authenticity and craftsmanship. To achieve harmony with modern luxury, we introduced clean lines, large open spaces, a muted tonal palette, and carefully curated finishes such as stone, metal accents, and custom millwork. Every rustic gesture was paired with a contemporary counterpart, ensuring neither style overpowered the other.Throughout the space, balance was the guiding principle. The beams create vertical drama, while the minimalist paneling and soft textures bring calm. Natural light enhances the warmth of the materials, and modern lighting fixtures provide sculptural refinement. This interplay of raw and polished, cozy and elegant, allows the home to feel both rooted and elevated.Ultimately, the harmonious integration comes from treating the two styles not as opposites, but as complementary expressions of comfort and sophistication—creating a home that feels character-rich, timeless, and beautifully balanced.

One of the greatest challenges in Dream Villa Residential House was integrating the necessary mechanical systems without interrupting the purity of the pitched ceiling and exposed beam design. Because the ceiling structure was a focal architectural feature, any visible ducting or bulkheads would have compromised the elegance and spatial clarity we wanted to achieve.Our problem-solving process centered on three strategies:1. Re-routing systems into peripheral zonesWe worked closely with the MEP team to redistribute major mechanical lines into perimeter walls, vertical chases, and cabinetry zones. By shifting these systems away from the ceiling plane, we kept the roof structure visually uninterrupted.2. Designing concealed channels within structural elementsWhere routing through beams was unavoidable, we coordinated early with the structural engineer to create concealed cavities within beam casings. This allowed wiring and small conduits to pass through without altering the rhythm or proportions of the exposed timber framework.3. Integrating mechanical access into the interior languageInstead of adding obvious access panels, we designed them to blend into the wall paneling and millwork compositions. Their forms and finishes were aligned with the existing geometry so they became visually seamless.The final solution is a ceiling that maintains its sculptural presence while quietly accommodating modern mechanical needs. This integration preserves the atmosphere of openness and simplicity—allowing the pitched structure to remain the hero of the space, while all functional systems work invisibly in the background.

The monotone color scheme in Dream Villa Residential House was a deliberate choice to create a timeless, calming, and gracefully cohesive environment. Our goal was to let the architecture—the pitched ceiling, exposed beams, and clean linear compositions—take center stage, while the color palette served as a unifying, grounding backdrop.Our color selection process was guided by three key considerations:1. Enhancing architectural clarityA restrained palette of soft greys, warm taupes, and muted neutrals helped emphasize the verticality of the beams and the openness of the space. By avoiding high-contrast colors, we maintained visual rhythm and allowed the architectural lines to stand out without distraction.2. Creating emotional harmonyWe wanted the interior to evoke a sense of serenity and understated luxury. The monotone palette provides a subtle, soothing atmosphere that supports daily living, softens the expansive height, and ties each functional zone—living, dining, and kitchen—into one cohesive experience.3. Supporting material integrityThe palette was chosen to complement natural materials rather than compete with them. Stone flooring, timber details, soft upholstery, and paneling all fall within the same tonal family, ensuring every texture feels connected.This palette directly shaped our material and furnishing choices:Materials were selected for their tactile richness within the same tonal spectrum—matte stone, warm wood veneers, brushed metals, and fabric weaves that add depth without adding contrast.Furnishings were curated in layers of neutrals to maintain balance: soft grey sofas, muted blue accents, and natural wood surfaces echo the architectural tones.Decorative elements, such as florals and glassware, were used sparingly to add freshness while respecting the calm baseline of the space.Ultimately, the monotone approach allowed the home to feel both modern and timeless—elegant without excess, refined without rigidity. It creates an environment where form, texture, and light take precedence, resulting in a harmonious and enduring visual language.

From the beginning, Mr. Chen envisioned Dream Villa as the culmination of his lifelong aspirations—a serene, light-filled retreat where he could enjoy simplicity, comfort, and a sense of grounded luxury in his retirement years. During our early conversations, his ideas were warm and heartfelt but not yet fully formed architecturally. Through collaboration, his vision gradually evolved from a general desire for “a peaceful home” into a clear design language rooted in openness, natural materials, and understated elegance.As we explored layouts, materials, and spatial flow together, Mr. Chen discovered how much he valued volume, breathing space, and visual calmness. This led to the pitched-ceiling concept and the decision to expose the timber beams—elements that express both grandeur and quiet authenticity. He also expressed a strong preference for minimal visual clutter and easy day-to-day living, which guided us toward a monotone palette, concealed storage strategies, and a layout that supports effortless movement.Throughout the process, my role was to translate these emotional and functional priorities into architecture. I adapted the design approach by:Emphasizing openness and accessibility, ensuring the home would feel spacious yet comfortable as he ages.Curating a warm, calming material palette that reflects his desire for a timeless environment rather than trend-driven aesthetics.Integrating natural light and soft transitions, reinforcing the restorative atmosphere he hoped for.Refining details for long-term comfort, including concealed mechanical systems, intuitive circulation, and low-maintenance materials.The final design is not just a house—it is Mr. Chen’s retirement dream brought to life through shared imagination, careful listening, and a deep respect for how he hopes to live in the next chapter of his life. It is a home shaped by his values, elevated through architecture, and made meaningful through collaboration.

Achieving a seamless open-plan layout in Dream Villa Residential House while preserving the identity of each functional area required a carefully layered strategy. Our goal was to create continuous visual flow without losing the comfort and clarity of defined living zones.1. Using architectural lines to guide movementThe pitched ceiling and exposed beams provided a natural structural rhythm. Their directional lines subtly organize the living, dining, and kitchen areas without the need for physical partitions. The ceiling became an invisible “spine” that keeps the open plan coherent.2. Designing with tonal zoning instead of wallsBy maintaining a monotone color palette but shifting textures and material finishes, each zone gains its own character. For example, soft textiles and layered furnishings ground the living area, while refined cabinetry and stonework anchor the kitchen. The palette stays unified, but the tactile experience shifts.3. Strategic placement of furniture as quiet dividersLarge anchor pieces—such as the sofa, the island, and the dining set—act as subtle spatial boundaries. Their arrangement encourages natural circulation patterns and gently defines each area without interrupting openness.4. Aligning lighting to functional intentWe selected lighting types that correspond to each zone’s purpose: ambient lighting for the living space, task lighting for the kitchen, and warm, focused pendants for dining. This hierarchy of light creates psychological separation even when the space remains physically continuous.5. Integrating concealed storage to reduce visual noiseBy eliminating clutter and keeping surfaces clean, the entire space reads as one harmonious environment. Hidden storage solutions ensure that each zone feels purposeful and calm.Together, these strategies allow the home to feel expansive and connected, while each area maintains its own identity and function. The result is an environment that flows effortlessly—open, cohesive, and intuitively organized.

he integration of natural light was one of the guiding principles of Dream Villa Residential House, and nowhere is this more evident than in the master bedroom’s direct relationship with the garden. From the outset, we wanted this space to feel like a private sanctuary—one where the rhythms of nature could subtly define the atmosphere of daily living.This connection shaped our design decisions in several important ways:1. Framing nature as part of the interior experienceWe positioned the master bedroom to capture soft, filtered daylight and garden views from the moment one enters the space. The window placement and proportions were carefully calibrated to act as “living artwork,” allowing greenery and natural textures to visually extend the room.2. Creating a seamless threshold between indoors and outdoorsThe choice of materials—warm woods, muted textiles, and a neutral palette—was intentionally aligned with the garden’s tones. This continuity in color and texture dissolves the boundary between interior and exterior, making the space feel larger, calmer, and more connected to its surroundings.3. Prioritizing morning and evening light qualityBecause this is a retirement home for Mr. Chen, we focused on designing a soothing circadian rhythm. Soft morning sunlight, controlled with layered window treatments, sets a gentle tone for the day. In the evening, the garden reflects ambient light back into the room, creating a tranquil atmosphere.4. Balancing privacy with opennessWe carefully adjusted the landscape design—plant heights, distances, and densities—to ensure the bedroom feels open to nature without compromising privacy. This informed the window sill heights, glazing type, and the positioning of furniture.Ultimately, the master bedroom’s garden connection shaped not just the aesthetics but the emotional intention of the space. It transforms the room into a retreat that embraces natural light, supports well-being, and reinforces the home’s overall philosophy of quiet luxury and grounded living.

The bar area in Dream Villa Residential House was intentionally introduced as a subtle yet refined contrast within the farmhouse-inspired architecture. While the home embraces warm materials, exposed timber, and a serene monotone palette, the bar adds an element of contemporary sophistication—enhancing the living experience without disrupting the overarching narrative of calm, grounded luxury.1. A touch of modern indulgence within a rustic frameworkThe bar brings a layer of refinement that balances the home’s natural, tactile elements. Its clean lines, curated finishes, and integrated lighting create a modern focal point that feels elevated yet harmonious with the surrounding materials.2. A social anchor that supports the open-plan lifestylePositioned within the flow of the living and dining areas, the bar becomes a natural gathering point for hosting, entertaining, or quiet evening rituals. It enriches daily living by offering a purposeful, intimate corner within the broader open layout.3. Material continuity ties it back to the farmhouse themeAlthough the bar carries a more contemporary attitude, we ensured alignment with the home’s palette—using warm wood tones, muted surfaces, and understated detailing. This continuity keeps the design cohesive and prevents the bar from feeling stylistically disconnected.4. Enhancing the narrative of “retirement luxury”For Mr. Chen, the bar symbolizes a lifestyle upgrade: a place to wind down, enjoy a drink, welcome friends, or simply appreciate the calmness of the home. It reflects the balance we aimed for throughout the project—comfort paired with subtle indulgence.Ultimately, the bar area acts as a sophisticated counterpoint to the farmhouse foundation. It elevates the home’s functionality, enriches the social experience, and reinforces the design narrative of timeless elegance infused with modern pleasure.

When selecting materials for the Dream Villa Residential House, my approach was guided by two key principles: creating visual interest through texture and contrast, and maintaining a cohesive overall aesthetic.I began by defining the core material palette—typically grounded in natural, timeless materials such as wood, stone, and metal. From there, I explored variations in texture, finish, and tone to introduce layers of depth. For example, pairing a smooth, matte plaster wall with a subtly textured stone floor creates a tactile contrast that draws the eye without feeling disjointed.In terms of cohesion, I ensured that each material referenced elements elsewhere in the space. This could be through color undertones, grain patterns, or reflective qualities, so that even contrasting surfaces feel part of the same narrative. I also considered light and shadow, knowing how natural and artificial lighting would interact with textures throughout the day to enhance the material dialogue.Ultimately, I view material selection as storytelling: each surface contributes to a rhythm and flow, guiding occupants through the home while balancing richness, comfort, and refinement.

Receiving the A’ Design Award for the Dream Villa Residential House is both an honor and a moment of reflection. It reinforces my belief that truly exceptional residential design emerges at the intersection of client aspirations and thoughtful innovation.Moving forward, I envision this recognition encouraging me to push the boundaries of creativity while remaining deeply attuned to each client’s personal vision. For me, awards are not just validation—they are reminders to explore new material palettes, spatial strategies, and lighting experiences that elevate everyday living.At the same time, I remain committed to listening closely to clients, understanding their lifestyle, and translating their dreams into environments that are both functional and poetic.
