Could you please tell us about your experience as a designer, artist, architect or creator?

After finishing my Baccalaureate studies, I entered the School of Industrial Technical Engineering, where I only finished the first year, because I lacked the creative part....

In 1991 I obtained my bachelor's degree in Applied Arts and Industrial Design.

My first job as an employee was at LUMINARIA, a lighting company in Valencia.

After leading creative teams for others, co-founding my first studio with former teammates, in 2011 I decided to create, design and run my own studio, manoloDuránDiseño, to which I transmit my clear philosophy of design as a strategic resource of the company. From my studio, global design services are developed; management, product design, graphics and interior design.

How did you become a designer?

From a very early age, I liked the visual arts. My mode of expression was always drawing.

Later, influenced by the industrial environment of the family business dedicated to the manufacture and marketing of domestic electric heating, I acquired industrial background in various disciplines such as technology and materials from the metalworking and electrical world.

The concepts of engineering (processes and materials) and design (innovative conception) unfailingly linked to the industrial concept, will form the profile that will accompany my entire professional career.

What are your priorities, technique and style when designing?

Since my beginnings I have understood design as a strategic activity that is not limited to slyling, but begins with the discovery of an opportunity by constantly looking for new perspectives and ideas with which to redefine services, products and experiences, providing value and innovation.

Which emotions do you feel when designing?

Without a doubt, the creative phase is the most exciting. Observation, analysis and personal relationships are three fundamental pillars to approach the creative process. Designers must be aware of our cultural function.

I have always understood this profession as a service to society. My humble contribution to the world of design could be the diversity of products that I have designed during these 35 years of career, always with the intention that they would be useful and serve to satisfy the real needs of the people who use them, both from an aesthetic, functional or emotional point of view.

Future generations will learn from the result of our work.

What particular aspects of your background shaped you as a designer?

My inspiration was undoubtedly my father, who being an industrial engineer at a time when being a designer "did not exist" as such in our country, knew how to understand that this discipline would be able to change the course of products.

You don't choose to be a designer. Being a designer is not an option, it is simply an attitude, a way of being and understanding life.

What is your growth path? What are your future plans? What is your dream design project?

I don't waste time thinking at such a distance, better "Carpe Dien". There is no point in worrying about what will come or what happened. The present is the experience and it is worth living it with all its intensity.

Each new project is always a space for reflection regarding the mark we will leave with this piece, how it will be used, who will use it, etc. This is enriching in all its dimension, we are equipping the future!!

Perhaps my evolution lies in the fact that every day I am more aware of how difficult it is to design well.

As for the project of my dreams, it would be the integral furnishing together with my son Carlos (industrial designer), of a house designed by the architecture studio of my son Manuel (Architect).

What are your advices to designers who are at the beginning of their career?

"When you're a good observer, everyone is your teacher" and "Before it happens, you have to dream it", are two phrases that I love.

It is not only a matter of talent, but also work and effort. Having the aptitude or gifts helps, but if it is not accompanied with dedication and passion, it is useless. You have to always be with your eyes open and be curious. Moving around a lot. It is also important to take care of the relationship with customers, listen to them, attend to their needs, this is what builds lasting collaboration projects.

You are truly successful as a designer, what do you suggest to fellow designers, artists and architects?

I'm not one to give advice, but I suggest that it's our obligation to have very fluid conversations with our clients. My work is always the result of close collaboration with the different R+D, marketing, production and commercial departments of my clients. We all make up the team...

Once again observe, listen and analyze.

What is your day to day look like?

I start my morning by checking emails and my to-dos. This is how we plan the weekly work.

Then there will be visits from customers and suppliers, review of prototypes, administrative procedures...

In the afternoon is when I'm most creative, I like to work late,.. My best designs appeared at night.

How do you keep up with latest design trends? To what extent do design trends matter?

Designs set trends. Trends are created by all groups that evolve in a certain direction without interacting directly.

I don't like to follow passing fashions, my designs must have my personal stamp, it is something that identifies me and differentiates me from the rest.

Trends are very important, I spend a lot of time analysing them through the web and groups with which we collaborate. Also from the ADCV Association of Designers of the Valencian Community), it keeps us punctually informed to the rest of the collective.

How do you know if a product or project is well designed? How do you define good design?

If they fulfill the mission for which they were conceived. At this point it is very important to have a good breafing.

My designs usually have simple and sober lines. I like shapes that convey stability, proportion and minimal expression. Although there is a common conceptual link, each project is the result of different constraints, which means that the result is never the same.

How do you decide if your design is ready?

The success of projects has a lot to do with customers. Their personality, their experience and the great knowledge they have of their businesses, gave me the necessary vision. Good projects are always developed with companies with which you have a special feeling, it is the designer-company collaboration that makes the project special, when that union really works, it shows in the final result.

All projects have room for improvement, but this is firmly linked to the time factor. As the years go by and reviewing past works, I always find details to polish, but these help me to evolve current projects.

What is your biggest design work?

My designs are usually complete collections of furnishings, therefore there is no specific piece, because it is its set that gives meaning. For example, a bedroom cannot be understood only with the headboard but is accompanied by its tables... In this sense I could say that the COSMO collection for Glicerio Chaves and within it is the ICON bed, along with the NOA bedside tables which is my most awarded design. Despite the years that have passed, it continues to be a top seller. That shows that it's a good design!

Who is your favourite designer?

I don't have one defined, but to name one of the first ones that I liked would be the Toledo chair by Jorge Pensi,.. I was impressed by the functional solution together with the use of the material (aluminum), in addition to the beauty of its silhouette itself.

Without a doubt I would love to have a long conversation with Leonardo da Vinci, I am passionate about his creative capacity in all fields.

Would you tell us a bit about your lifestyle and culture?

I live and work in Valencia, a beautiful city on the Mediterranean coast, where the friendliness of the climate has made us more hedonistic, and that climatic comfort also derives in the way we design.

The city of Valencia and by extension the Valencian Community is a land of creativity. The work of design, architecture, interior design and illustration professionals over the last hundred years demonstrates a design culture that extends throughout the territory. All this comes together in Valencia World Design Capital in 2022 and this marks the importance of...

In my free time I love nature and there are all the colors, something that is vital for my work. Color is implicit in the nature of matter and of our perception; we ignore it, but it already exists because it is there and responds to our way of perceiving the world with its receptor differences. It is very important to learn to master its properties in order to know how to use it as one of the most important elements in creative design decisions.

Would you tell us more about your work culture and business philosophy?

I've gone through all the stages of work. I worked as an employee for large companies in the furniture sector, I had my own studio with associates and finally I chose to have my own design studio alone.

I think that they were all good, each one at its own time, undoubtedly this last one is the best, although the capacity is more limited, but as a consideration is that the designs are more elaborate, more personal...

What are your philanthropic contributions to society as a designer, artist and architect?

Designers must be aware of our cultural function.

I have always understood this profession as a service to society. My humble contribution to the world of design could be the diversity of products that I have designed during these 35 years of career, always with the intention that they would be useful and serve to satisfy the real needs of the people who use them, both from an aesthetic, functional or emotional point of view.

Future generations will learn from the result of our work.

I have recently collaborated with organizations such as the ADCV promoting and supporting various initiatives to support people and professionals affected by the DANA that devastated the province of Valencia on October 29, 2024.

What positive experiences you had when you attend the A' Design Award?

Honestly, I haven't won so many awards in my career, but when they come they are welcome, it's a recognition of your effort, a message that tells you that what you're doing isn't bad. I don't feel famous. My ego is resolved by seeing that my designs are available to the public and they buy and enjoy them.

The awards are a recognition of a career that undoubtedly projects and makes visible works and people.

If the audience has decided that today I am the "Designer of the Day", it must be that I am doing something right...

Avant Badkamermeubelen · 20 vragen

An embossed frame draws and encloses the profile of the suspended furniture. It runs on columns, on open elements, on wall units creating a pleasant continuum.

What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?

An embossed frame draws and encloses the profile of the suspended furniture. It runs on columns, on open elements, on wall units creating a pleasant continuum.

What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?

We wanted to find an untapped functionality in the design of doors and drawers of home furniture, which consists of the play of volumes and the combinability of materials.

What are your future plans for this award winning design?

To increase the turnover of my client Grupo Bono, for its AKUA bathroom division.

How long did it take you to design this particular concept?

The development of the Avant collection is part of a global bathroom furnishing project that was born in 2023. A development that lasted until the end of 2024.

Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration?

This design began to take shape in June 2023, through a specific order from my client Grupo Bono, for its AKUA bathroom division.

Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself?

It is currently in productive development, along with the rest of the models in the collection, which we hope will be presented to the market in 2026 by my client Grupo Bono, for its AKUA bathroom division.

What made you design this particular type of work?

This project is based on the exercise carried out two years earlier in a project of wardrobes for bedrooms, for my client Grupo Bono, for its KUBICO wardrobe division, which I invite you to see on my website.

Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work?

It was precisely the absence of defined references that made him propose this new and structural technical solution.

Who is the target customer for his design?

It is a very versatile product from a formal and economic point of view. It will depend on the choice and combination of materials that meets the needs and aesthetics of the end customer. Therefore, its target audience is broad-spectrum from mid-range to high-end.

What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts?

The main differences lie in the structural design of the aluminium profile that allows the combination of board and glass, together with the number of combinable materials ranging from melamine boards, lacquered MDF boards and boards covered with varnished natural wood veneer.

If we add to this the fact that the customer can choose any combination of materials, colours and finishes, as well as the measurements and configuration of doors and drawers, we find a product that has no competition in the European market.

How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean?

AVANT, means "forward", "advance","... one step further."

Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project?

My usual 3D assisted design tools, ... AutoCAD, skechUp, v-Ray..

What is the most unique aspect of your design?

The pieces are assembled at different depths, creating an asymmetrical and balanced relationship with thin horizontal lines of their framing with an exclusive aluminium profile system, which allows different thicknesses of board and/or glass to be joined

Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills?

The I+D department of my client Grupo Bono, was key in the development of this project. I have always understood that collaboration with the different departments of the client that must produce the project are key to its success.

What is the role of technology in this particular design?

The specific design and development of the structural aluminium profile – (which allows combining board and glass, together with the number of combinable materials ranging from melamine boards, lacquered MDF boards and boards covered with varnished natural wood veneer), is the technological essence of the AVANT collection.

They are super matte melamines or wood effect, that is, protected with a crystallized resin at high temperatures, which makes them more resistant to water and humidity, as well as easy to clean.

Matte and soft, composed of cellulose and innovative resins, it is treated with nanotechnology to make it anti-imprint, hygienic, waterproof, shock-resistant and scratch-resistant. With this type of material, small scratches can also be adjusted: you just need to cover with a damp cloth and pass with the iron.

Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design?

Both the analysis and subsequent market study, as well as sociological studies of functional and aesthetic needs for the defined age range, gave us the clues to define the breafing of this product-collection.

What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept?

The biggest challenge was, like almost all industrial projects, the optimization of processes and costs, without sacrificing aesthetic features.

How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition?

When a product meets the initial expectations and is aesthetically very balanced, you know that it can be successful. This made us think it was worth trying to submit it to a prestigious competition and we didn't hesitate. Now we can know, with our Bronze A'design Award, that you were not wrong, which encourages us to face the commercialization of it, with more guarantees of success.

What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work?

The improvements appeared as the development of the first production prototypes progressed. In the launch phase we are finalizing some small details that will help a better balance of costs.

Any other things you would like to cover that have not been covered in these questions?

Just to mention that Avant, as I said at the beginning, is part of a "Total Look" collection, in which other types of furniture are already emerging, which we will surely present in future editions of the A'design Award

Could you please tell us a bit about your design background and education?

What motivates you to design in general, why did you become a designer?

Did you choose to become a designer, or you were forced to become one?

What do you design, what type of designs do you wish to design more of?

Dormitorios, Salones, Armarios y Vestidores, Baños y Cocina.

What should young designers do to become a design legend like you?

Ser observadores e inconformistas con las modas.

What distinguishes between a good designer and a great designer?

What makes a good design a really good design, how do you evaluate good design?

What is the value of good design? Why should everyone invest in good design?

Optimiza recursos, agrega valores, reduce costes y tiempos.

What would you design and who would you design for if you had the time?

What is the dream project you haven't yet had time to realize?

What is your secret recipe of success in design, what is your secret ingredient?

Who are some other design masters and legends you get inspired from?

What are your favorite designs by other designers, why do you like them?

What is your greatest design, which aspects of that design makes you think it is great?

How could people improve themselves to be better designers, what did you do?

If you hadn't become a designer, what would you have done?

Hubiese sido Arquitecto.

How do you define design, what is design for you?

Who helped you to reach these heights, who was your biggest supporter?

What helped you to become a great designer?

What were the obstacles you faced before becoming a design master?

How do you think designers should present their work?

What's your next design project, what should we expect from you in future?

What's your ultimate goal as a designer?

What people expect from an esteemed designer such as yourself?

How does design help create a better society?

What are you currently working on that you are especially excited about?

Which design projects gave you the most satisfaction, why?

What would you like to see changed in design industry in the coming years?

Where do you think the design field is headed next?

How long does it take you to finalize a design project?

When you have a new design project, where do you start?

What is your life motto as a designer?

Do you think design sets the trends or trends set the designs?

What is the role of technology when you design?

What kind of design software and equipment do you use in your work?

What is the role of the color, materials and ambient in design?

What do you wish people to ask about your design?

When you see a new great design or product what comes into your mind?

Who is your ideal design partner? Do you believe in co-design?

Which people you interacted had the most influence on your design?

Which books you read had the most effect on your design?

“Cómo nacen los objetos” de Bruno Munari.

How did you develop your skills as a master designer?

Irrelative of time and space, who you would want to meet, talk and discuss with?

How do you feel about all the awards and recognition you had, is it hard to be famous?

No me siento famoso.

What is your favorite color, place, food, season, thing and brand?

What makes your day great as a designer, how do you motivate yourself?

When you were a little child, was it obvious that you would become a great designer?

What do you think about future; what do you see will happen in thousand years from now?

Please tell us anything you wish your fans to know about you, your design and anything else?

Where does the design inspiration for your works come from? How do you feed your creativity? What are your sources of inspirations?

How would you describe your design style? What made you explore more this style and what are the main characteristics of your style? What's your approach to design?

Where do you live? Do you feel the cultural heritage of your country affects your designs? What are the pros and cons during designing as a result of living in your country?

How do you work with companies?

What are your suggestions to companies for working with a designer? How can companies select a good designer?

Can you talk a little about your design process?

What are 5 of your favorite design items at home?

Dormitorio, salón, baño, cocina y el jardín.

Can you describe a day in your life?

Could you please share some pearls of wisdom for young designers? What are your suggestions to young, up and coming designers?

From your perspective, what would you say are some positives and negatives of being a designer?

What is your "golden rule" in design?

What skills are most important for a designer?

Which tools do you use during design? What is inside your toolbox? Such as software, application, hardware, books, sources of inspiration etc.?

Designing can sometimes be a really time consuming task, how do you manage your time?

How long does it take to design an object from beginning to end?

Who are some of your clients?

What type of design work do you enjoy the most and why?

What are your future plans? What is next for you?

Do you work as a team, or do you develop your designs yourself?

How can people contact you?

Icon Slaapkamer · 10 vragen

The idea stems from an analysis of utility. Integrating a lighting system into a bedroom furniture project is no secret.

Your innovative approach to lighting integration in Icon Bedroom, particularly the thin horizontal and vertical lines hosting courtesy lighting, creates a striking visual impact – could you elaborate on how this illumination concept evolved during your design process?

The idea stems from an analysis of utility. Integrating a lighting system into a bedroom furniture project is no secret. What's truly important is that the lighting fulfills its function and aesthetically accentuates the forms, since the designed object will have two states—day and night—and its appearance shouldn't change. The ICON headboard has very strong lines during the day, but when illuminated at night, its aesthetic softens.

The Icon Bedroom collection achieves a remarkable balance between minimalist aesthetics and practical functionality – what inspired your decision to focus on regular, strict forms while maintaining the intimate, personal nature of bedroom spaces?

My designs typically feature simple, understated lines. I like forms that convey stability, proportion, and minimalism. Although there's a common conceptual thread, each project stems from different constraints, meaning the result is never exactly the same.

Your material selection for Icon Bedroom demonstrates thoughtful consideration of sustainability, utilizing chipboard and MDF – how did environmental consciousness influence your design decisions while meeting the demands of high-volume production?

I have a predilection for wood and its derivatives. It's a living, natural, versatile material with a wide range of finishes and textures. And if you try, you can do almost anything with wood. Newer, synthetic materials offer durability for certain projects and products.

The modular nature of Icon Bedroom, with its various container elements and the Noa system, offers exceptional versatility – could you share your vision behind creating this adaptable design language that accommodates diverse user needs?

In a furniture collection project, it's essential that the client finds it easy to choose the furniture that best suits their needs. Providing the collection with a wide range of sizes and configurations was a key requirement for the client.

Icon Bedroom's success in balancing high visual impact with cost-effective manufacturing represents a significant achievement – how did you overcome the challenge of maintaining design excellence while optimizing production efficiency?

The extensive color palette of Icon Bedroom, featuring five wood tones, five lacquered colors, and three marble textures, provides remarkable customization options – what guided your development of this comprehensive finishing system?

Good projects are always developed with companies you have a special connection with. It's the designer-company collaboration that makes a project special; when that partnership truly works, it shows in the final result. Close collaboration with my client's various R&D, marketing, production, and sales departments is key to success and production optimization. We're all part of the team…

Your Silver A' Design Award-winning Icon Bedroom showcases a unique interplay of contrasts – could you elaborate on how you developed the concept of balancing night and day, soft versus rough, and heavy versus light elements?

The perfect juxtaposition of night and day, light and shadow, was the initial goal. Basic geometries and subtle contrasts did the rest.

The asymmetrical yet balanced relationship between different elements in Icon Bedroom creates a dynamic visual composition – what drove your decision to explore this particular aesthetic approach in bedroom furniture design?

The ICON headboard is an exercise in abstraction and dynamism. The pieces are assembled at varying depths, creating a headboard on a canvas of geometries and shadows that produce a powerful visual image.

Icon Bedroom's development involved extensive market analysis and user need assessment – how did this research phase influence your design decisions and help shape the final product?

Clients play a crucial role in the success of projects. Their personalities, experience, and deep understanding of their businesses provide me with the necessary insight. Good projects are always developed with companies with whom you have a special connection; it's the designer-company collaboration that makes a project unique. When that partnership truly works, it shows in the final result. This is the case with my relationship with "GLICERIO CHAVES," a leading national manufacturer of home furnishings.

The ergonomic standards incorporated into Icon Bedroom reflect a deep consideration for user comfort – could you discuss how you integrated these human-centric design principles while maintaining the collection's distinctive aesthetic character?

The role that designers play in addressing complex social problems is indispensable, as their task is to contribute to the conceptualization, creation, and development of projects that improve people's lives.

Your innovative integration of a perimeter frame in Avant Bathroom Furniture creates a striking visual balance - could you elaborate on how this design element emerged from your creative process and what it represents in terms of contemporary bathroom aesthetics?

The idea of a relief frame that draws and encloses the profile of the furniture arises as a primary objective of combining in a single element the aesthetics and the unexploited function in the design of doors and drawers of home furniture, which consists of the play of volumes and combinability of materials. It also runs on columns, on open elements, on wall units creating a pleasant continuum.

The Avant Bathroom Furniture collection masterfully combines lacquered surfaces with natural textures - what inspired your decision to juxtapose these contrasting materials, and how does this duality enhance the user experience?

This is a feature that is representative of many of my furniture designs for the habitat. I have always understood that furniture is looked at and touched. All the senses are important to create well-being.

Given the challenge of balancing high visual impact with cost-effective manufacturing for Avant Bathroom Furniture, how did you achieve this delicate equilibrium while maintaining the collection's distinctive design elements?

The biggest challenge was, like almost all industrial projects, the optimization of processes and costs, without sacrificing aesthetic features. Undoubtedly, working from the beginning of the project with industrial partners specialized in aluminum injection systems, has made it possible to control and optimize technology, material and manufacturing costs, in each of the phases, reaching very optimal results.

The asymmetrical relationships created by varying depths in Avant Bathroom Furniture are particularly intriguing - could you share your thought process behind these dimensional variations and their role in modern bathroom design?

The current trend is based on very clean lines and planes. This circumstance, in my opinion, makes all products similar. The fact of increasing volumes aesthetically is transgressive to me while allowing the combination of several materials and textures with the same assembly element.

Your exclusive brushed aluminum profile in Avant Bathroom Furniture allows for different thicknesses of materials to be joined - how did this technical innovation evolve, and what possibilities does it open for future bathroom furniture design?

The specific design and development of the structural aluminium profile – (which allows combining board and glass, together with the number of combinable materials ranging from melamine boards, lacquered MDF boards and boards covered with varnished natural wood veneer), is the technological essence of the AVANT collection. Some of the materials used are super matte melamines or wood effect, that is, protected with a crystallized resin at high temperatures, which makes them more resistant to water and humidity, as well as easy to clean. Others have a matte and soft finish, made of cellulose and innovative resins, treated with nanotechnology to make it anti-imprint, hygienic, resistant to water, shocks and scratches. With this type of material, small scratches can also be adjusted: you just need to cover with a damp cloth and pass with the iron.

The minimalist aesthetic of Avant Bathroom Furniture seems to challenge traditional bathroom storage conventions - what insights about contemporary living informed your approach to functionality and space optimization?

The Avant Bathroom Furniture Collection is available in different heights, depths and storage solutions. For example, columns: with one, two or more doors to place next to each other and combine them. The vertical wall cabinet can alternate closed volumes and transparencies that let light through, creating a feeling of spaciousness and brightness, and are equipped with interior lighting and glass shelves. Light and sophisticated containers that blend harmoniously, giving the composition an effect of formal lightness in any bathroom space.

As sustainability becomes increasingly crucial in design, how does Avant Bathroom Furniture's material selection and production process reflect your commitment to environmental responsibility?

As I mentioned before, some of the boards that make up the structure and fronts of the Avant collection, are composed of cellulose and innovative resins, are treated with nanotechnology to make it hygienic, resistant to water, shocks and scratches. It is true that these materials have a higher cost, but the end user is increasingly concerned about ecological and recyclable products.

The integration of smoked glass elements in Avant Bathroom Furniture creates fascinating visual dynamics - could you discuss how these transparent elements contribute to the collection's overall design narrative?

The vertical wall cabinet can alternate closed volumes and transparencies that let light through, creating a feeling of spaciousness and brightness, and are equipped with interior lighting and glass shelves. Light and sophisticated containers that blend harmoniously, giving the composition an effect of formal lightness in any bathroom space. The Avant Led mirrors are backlit on the perimeter, and the practical vanity mirror enhances their functionality through a practical movement.

Your extensive market research clearly influenced Avant Bathroom Furniture's development - how did user feedback and industry trends shape the final design decisions while maintaining your unique creative vision?

Both the analysis and subsequent market study, as well as sociological studies of functional and aesthetic needs for the defined age range, gave us the clues to define the breafing of this product-collection. To this we add the distinctive feature, which was the profile that supports the multiple combinations of textures and materials.

Looking ahead, how do you envision Avant Bathroom Furniture influencing future bathroom design trends, and what aspects of this collection do you believe will have lasting impact on the industry?

Avant is a tale of beauty that speaks through shapes and materials. Sight and touch coexist in a dialectical relationship, in a multisensory composition. "Details are not details, they are design" and "design is the art of industrial society"
