I have a wide range of interests, which drives me to appreciate and enjoy art and motivates me to keep high enthusiasm toward all things.

Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer?

I have a wide range of interests, which drives me to appreciate and enjoy art and motivates me to keep high enthusiasm toward all things. I’m not only an amateur artist but also an interior designer with a martial art background. I’ve always loved art; therefore, I’ve chosen to become am interior designer. I especially love to participate in charitable events, and was once the club director of Lions Clubs International. One of my paintings was also donated for charity at Art Revolution Taipei 2013.

Can you tell us more about your company / design studio?

Nature, primitive and simplicity represent the start of humanities and cultures. Totem Design guards the essence of the original spirit by creating the aesthetic of space from conversations between humanity and nature, interpreting the liveliness of space and culture.

What is "design" for you?

It is about the conversations between humanity and nature and the harmony created through space. Let’s return to the starting point and dig deep into the conversation between human and space. Let’s view with different perspectives and lead life to walk into the path of beautiful harmony that consists of nature and delight.

What is your most favorite design, could you please tell more about it?

I like designs that are carried out naturally through constant innovations and inner conversations between one’s conscious and senses.

When judging a design as good or bad, which aspects do you consider first?

Any design that can enrich the substance of life, that allows you to accumulate both inner and outer energy is a good design.

How do you think the "design field" is evolving? What is the future of design?

In the future, more emphasis will be put on environmental protection, changing lifestyles and cultures which lead to the interweave and integration of various fields

Where does the design inspiration for your works come from? How do you feed your creativity? What are your sources of inspirations?

Thinking from a Buddhist perspective, creating canvas paintings, learning martial arts and charity events are all things that inspired me, for thinking determines everything, art fulfills life, martial arts strengthen your health and charity events are accesses to service.

How would you describe your design style? What made you explore more this style and what are the main characteristics of your style? What's your approach to design?

I tend to utilize the creating model of oil painting to make organization. For instance, I include all elements such as color, shade, texture, line and structures to compose the melody of design. I mix and match all elements to create a sketch of a painting, and that’s my style and characteristics.

Where do you live? Do you feel the cultural heritage of your country affects your designs? What are the pros and cons during designing as a result of living in your country?

Taiwan is a country that breeds energy. It has developed so far from the period of Dutch occupation, when Zheng ChengGong first arrived Taiwan; from Ching dynasty to the democracy Taiwan we recognize today. Taiwan’s rich energy in historical development clashes the land with great spirit that inspires many designs.

Can you talk a little about your design process?

I start thinking from a dot, then it will extend to a line and expand into a surface. Then it will clash, stimulate, overlap, accumulate and eventually retroact onto space. Everything starts from simplicity to complex then complex back to simplicity. In the end the most exquisite part stays.

Could you please share some pearls of wisdom for young designers? What are your suggestions to young, up and coming designers?

Be confident about your design, gain energy from different perspectives that will intrigue your conscious and sensation. Don’t worry too much about the reputation of your project. Instead, you should consistantly enrich your knowledge about humanity and arts to lay the groundwork for good creation.

I suggest people to approach all kinds of art to cultivate connoisseurship and elevate your own temperament. Designers’ own depth and how they feel about beauty can give their projects liveliness and spirituality, and continue to carry out conversations with people through their projects.

Your innovative use of Pantone 2021 Colors of the Year in Colors and the Origin Gym creates a powerful visual narrative - could you elaborate on how these specific colors contribute to the psychological and emotional experience of gym users?

In international color theory, the combination of yellow and gray represents "stability with hope." "Menstrual color" is considered a natural, normal physiological phenomenon, where yellow symbolizes vitality and hope, while gray represents stability and tranquility. After the outbreak of the pandemic, the use of color energy allowed people to look forward to overcoming grief, taking firm steps, and embracing hope and anticipation.

The exposed structural elements in Colors and the Origin Gym, such as bare brick walls and visible wires, create a striking contrast with the vibrant color scheme - what inspired this deliberate juxtaposition of raw materials and bold colors?

From an Eastern perspective: the Buddha's "original face" and Lao Tzu's "Tao Te Ching" philosophical concepts—returning to the essential elements of matter as they should be (exposed brick walls and visible wires)—combined with the Western Pantone 2021 Color of the Year, the bold color combinations make it vibrant and full of life—and this is the foundation of fitness activities.

The 99-square-meter space of Colors and the Origin Gym demonstrates remarkable spatial efficiency - how did you approach the challenge of balancing functional workout areas with aesthetic elements while maintaining the flow of energy throughout the space?

Through the combination of vibrant elements, colors, and powerful diagonal lines, a lively and energetic atmosphere is created, naturally generating a "people-oriented" approach that directly corresponds to efficiency, thereby strengthening the body and mind, transmitting positive energy, and accumulating hope and happiness for the future.

The steel-structured Z Power logo serves as a central design element in Colors and the Origin Gym - could you share the conceptual journey behind incorporating this symbolic element and its relationship to the overall design philosophy?

"Z Power," structured with steel, much like the human body's skeletal structure, embodies a sense of "power."The international color palette, combined with the overall design, imbues the work with a design soul, igniting a flame of life. In the current context of the pandemic, the work also carries a sense of mission and hope for our times.

In designing Colors and the Origin Gym during the pandemic period, how did your approach to creating spaces for physical wellness evolve to address changing perspectives on health and community connection?

During the pandemic, reducing large-scale contact and lowering the chance of infection – adopting niche fitness methods.Through the energy of color and geometric proportions, people can improve their health through physical exercise and immunity by interacting in the community.

The period red and grass green color combination in Colors and the Origin Gym creates a powerful entry experience - what led to this specific color pairing, and how does it set the tone for the entire gym experience?

Red represents passion and vitality, while green represents natural health, just like the health and vitality displayed by nature. It also originates from Lao Tzu's "Tao follows nature," allowing life to run freely in nature.

The concept of origin and simplicity appears throughout Colors and the Origin Gym - could you elaborate on how this theme influenced your material selections and architectural decisions?

The selection of all materials followed the theme of "preserving the original appearance and simplifying complexity." Therefore, H-beams were used in the building to retain the factory's production process numbers, exposed brick walls and electrical wires are clearly visible, and large areas of paint use Pantone's International Color of the Year - a meaningful color scheme, integrated into the overall design.

Colors and the Origin Gym seamlessly integrates power, gentleness, and aesthetics - how did you achieve this delicate balance while maintaining the functional requirements of a modern fitness facility?

Space is a medium, and the "people" who move in this space are the focus. How to use line structural force, color psychology, equipment and facilities to provide field users with reasonable achievement of their expectations is the ultimate goal.

The geometric shapes and color blocks in Colors and the Origin Gym create a distinct visual rhythm - could you discuss how these design elements contribute to motivating and energizing gym users?

The simple yet bold use of color, along with the perfect proportions of the lines, creates meaningful geometric shapes. Through lines and different color psychology, it generates resonant energy that inspires every fitness user.

Looking ahead, how do you envision the design principles employed in Colors and the Origin Gym influencing future fitness space designs, particularly in response to evolving wellness trends?

The discussion began with an exploration of the essence of health goals, which led to the selection of specific element combinations. This, in turn, created a resonant energy halo effect in the design field, naturally inspiring fitness enthusiasts to exercise and achieve better health through physical activity.
