Extended Interview with Hasan Sefa Sofuoglu

Could you please tell us about your experience as a designer, artist, architect or creator?
I graduated in Interior Architecture in Istanbul. Then, I completed my master’s degree in Interior and Spatial Design at Domus Academy in Milan, Italy, where I enhanced my skills in innovative and international design.
How did you become a designer?
I am motivated by the power of design to improve everyday life and create meaningful experiences. I became a designer because I love blending creativity with functionality.
What are your priorities, technique and style when designing?
Becoming a designer was a conscious choice driven by passion. It was never a force but a natural path.
Which emotions do you feel when designing?
I am a multidisciplinary and spatial designer, so I design all living environments that shape how people experience life. This includes interiors, public spaces, and any area where life unfolds. Moving forward, I aim to focus even more on holistic and sustainable living environments.
What particular aspects of your background shaped you as a designer?
They should stay curious, keep learning, and be fearless in experimenting while respecting the design fundamentals.
What is your growth path? What are your future plans? What is your dream design project?
A great designer not only creates beautiful work but also understands user needs deeply and solves problems elegantly.
What are your advices to designers who are at the beginning of their career?
Good design balances aesthetics, usability, and sustainability. I evaluate design by its impact on people and environment.
You are truly successful as a designer, what do you suggest to fellow designers, artists and architects?
Good design improves quality of life, increases efficiency, and creates lasting value. Everyone should invest because it pays off long-term.
What is your day to day look like?
If I had more time, I would design innovative, sustainable homes not only for people but also for animals. We have occupied so much of their natural habitats that we owe them beautiful, respectful spaces too. Creating environments where humans and animals can coexist harmoniously is a design challenge I’d love to explore.
How do you keep up with latest design trends? To what extent do design trends matter?
My dream project is to design a magnificent, inclusive spiritual sanctuary that respects and reflects diverse faiths—be it a mosque, church, temple, synagogue, cathedral, or any place of worship recognized in different cultures, including Eastern traditions. I believe such a space can foster unity, peace, and shared humanity by embracing the sacred architecture of various religions.
How do you know if a product or project is well designed? How do you define good design?
My secret is a balance of curiosity, continuous learning, and respecting both function and emotion in design. I always listen deeply to users’ needs and the context of the project.
How do you decide if your design is ready?
I draw inspiration from masters like Zaha Hadid for her futuristic forms, Tadao Ando for his harmony with nature, and Philippe Starck for his creativity and wit.
What is your biggest design work?
I admire designs that merge innovation with simplicity, like Alvar Aalto’s furniture or Jean Prouvé’s architecture. They are timeless and human-centered.
Who is your favourite designer?
My greatest design is the Auramaris Yacht, because it seamlessly blends aesthetics with functionality, creating a unique narrative inspired by both celestial and maritime elements.
Would you tell us a bit about your lifestyle and culture?
To improve as designers, people should stay curious, practice consistently, and seek diverse experiences. Personally, I focused on continuous learning and collaborating with multidisciplinary teams.
Would you tell us more about your work culture and business philosophy?
If I hadn’t become a designer, I think I would have pursued a career in gastronomy or perhaps the arts, as I’ve always been drawn to creative fields.
What are your philanthropic contributions to society as a designer, artist and architect?
Design is the thoughtful process of solving problems by creating functional and beautiful solutions that improve people’s lives. For me, it’s a blend of art and science.
What positive experiences you had when you attend the A’ Design Award?
My biggest supporters have been my family and mentors who encouraged my creativity and perseverance throughout my journey.
