About 94Hilook CIS Design

94HiLook is a corporate identity system created for a hybrid store that combines a curated supermarket, a yakiniku restaurant and a coffee bar. The logo merges bull horns, a fish tail and the numeral 94 to represent the selection of products from land and sea. The red and black palette is inspired by Japanese lacquerware, with gold, blue and light gray as supporting colors. The design refers to the artisan spirit of Tsukiji Market in Tokyo. Modular layout rules apply the identity to signage, packaging, the storefront facade and social media.

Eason Liu and Elvis Ku's 94Hilook CIS Design demonstrates the sophisticated synthesis of Eastern and Western graphic design traditions within a comprehensive corporate identity system that channels the bold reductivism of mid-twentieth-century poster art while maintaining unmistakable contemporary commercial vitality. The designers have constructed a visual language of remarkable chromatic discipline, restricting the palette to three primary voices: a commanding vermilion red that carries both the celebratory associations of auspicious color in Eastern cultural contexts and the attention-commanding urgency of Western advertising tradition, a grounding lamp black that provides structural weight and typographic clarity, and a champagne gold metallic that elevates the system toward premium positioning through its reflective materiality and connotations of excellence and achievement. This triadic color strategy achieves multiple simultaneous objectives: establishing immediate visual recognition across varied applications, creating sufficient contrast for legibility across scale reductions, and encoding cultural meaning through chromatic symbolism that resonates across diverse audience constituencies. The compositional achievement lies in the dynamic tension between geometric order and energetic fragmentation, wherein rectangular fields and typographic elements align to implied grid structures yet rotate and overlap to generate kinetic visual interest, a formal strategy that suggests both architectural stability and adaptive flexibility, arguably reflecting the balance contemporary brands must strike between consistent identity and responsive engagement across multiple platforms and contexts. The bilingual typographic treatment reveals particular sensitivity to the distinct formal requirements of Latin alphabetic and logographic writing systems, selecting typefaces that share geometric simplicity and modern character while respecting the intrinsic structural differences between linear alphabetic forms and complex character constructions, thereby achieving visual harmony without forced stylistic uniformity. The materiality of the system, evident in the metallic ink application and varied paper stocks, communicates investment in production quality and attention to tactile experience, an increasingly significant differentiator in an era of screen-dominated communication where physical brand artifacts carry heightened meaning through their very tangibility. The strategic use of negative space and asymmetrical balance suggests familiarity with Japanese design principles wherein emptiness functions as active compositional element rather than mere background, allowing individual elements breathing room and investing the overall system with sophisticated restraint despite the boldness of color and scale. One might consider how this identity system negotiates the complex challenge of multicultural address, creating visual forms that carry meaning across linguistic and cultural boundaries while remaining rooted in specific cultural design heritages, and how the geometric abstraction and chromatic intensity function as a universal visual language that transcends particular contexts while the typographic specificity grounds the work in concrete communicative purpose, inviting reflection on the evolving role of graphic design in constructing brand narratives that must simultaneously assert distinctive character and welcome diverse audiences into meaningful engagement with the values and offerings the identity represents.

Production Technology
The logo combines bull horns, a fish tail, and the number 94, symbolizing expertise in curating products from both land and sea. Inspired by traditional Japanese lacquerware, the red and black color scheme highlights meat in the supermarket and fire in the yakiniku area, creating both cultural depth and visual impact. Supporting colors such as gold, blue, and light gray add diversity and reflect the lively spirit of Tsukiji Market. The building facade takes cues from Japanese fabric door curtains, continuing the red and black palette.
Design Challenge
Positioned as a community supermarket, the space encourages inclusivity through coffee gatherings, curated product displays, and yakiniku dining, fostering connections among diverse users. Digital menus reduce paper waste, and multilingual visuals improve access to information. The overall design merges modular visual identity with spatial planning to reflect the brand belief that good design supports sustainability. This system builds emotional ties with customers, promoting thoughtful choices in buying and eating, while supporting local brands and responsible food culture.
Project Duration
The project finished in 2025 in Taiwan.
Operation Flow
The modular identity system prioritizes clarity and a defined information hierarchy, ensuring effective communication. It integrates online and offline channels according to brand needs, enabling the team to operate efficiently using standardized guidelines. The rebrand to 94HiLook uses "94", which phonetically resembles meaning "just is" in Chinese, to directly convey the brand message. Geometric subsidiary patterns streamline promotional material production, using orderly aesthetics to balance vibrant product colors, enhancing marketing flexibility and efficiency.
Research
The brand is renamed as 94HiLook. In Chinese semantics, this name intuitively evokes fresh meat products and is also chosen considering the aesthetic balance of the font strokes. The design incorporates the owner's aspiration for the cultural experience of Tsukiji Market and translates the brand's meticulous, refined traits, corresponding to the artisan spirit, into visual vocabulary. This allows customers to personally participate in the journey of ingredients, from selection and preparation to enjoyment, and review their food choices through the experience.
Inspiration
The founder of 94HiLook leveraged their professional chef background and years of experience in live streamed product selection to create a hybrid store combining Japanese yakiniku, a supermarket, and a coffee bar. The initial purpose of the brand refresh was to enhance the quality of the pickup store and transform it into a hybrid supermarket, restaurant operation. This was ultimately refined into an upscale curated supermarket combined with individual yakiniku and a coffee bar.
