About Aktas Lamp
This is a modern and versatile lighting product. Hanging detail and all cabling have been concealed to minimize visual clutter. This product is designed to be used in commercial spaces. The most important aspect is found in the lightness of its frame. The single-piece frame is produced from bending a 20 x 20 x 1,5 mm square shaped metal profile. The light frame supports a relatively big and transparent glass cylinder encasing the light bulb. One 40W E27 long and slim Edison light bulb is used in the product. All metal pieces are painted a semi-matt bronze color.

- Production Technology
- The product was designed with the aim of creating a simple but elegant lighting apparatus. The single piece metal profile was bent in order to shift the source of illumination approximately 50cm. apart from the wall. As this lighting fixture was designed for use in commercial cafe's & restaurants; the shifting of the light source would mean a more homogeneous level of illumination on the table surfaces just below. A transparent cylindrical formed glass encasing is used to encircle the visibility of the Edison bulb used in the lamp.
- Design Challenge
- The biggest problem to deal with generally in design projects generally is the difficulty in persuading clients to give permission to and manufactury approval of newly designed items. The difficulty arises from the fact that uniquely designed items always carry the risk of being over-priced and the quality of manufacture is not always determinable. However in this project, I would sincerely like to thank the owner of several Liva Patisserie branches, Mr. Reyhan Haciosmanoglu for his belief and trust placed in myself and my design capabilities.
- Project Duration
- The whole project included the design of approximately 2,000 m2 of space to serve as a patisserie and supporting production areas. The design scope contained various scaled design activities. Scale of design varying from the design of the outer façade of the building, then the creation of floor layout plans and decoration concept studies in interior arcitectural design scale; and finally to the design of furniture, separators and various lighting fixtures on the product design scale. The project started March 2017 and finished in December 2017 in Ankara, Turkey.
- Operation Flow
- The cabling of the light fixture is attached to 220V. main electric system and an fuse is assigned to control all light fixtures in a zone. No other intervention is needed for operation. The light fixture is mounted on walls adjacent to dining tables in the main hall. The fixture provides light to both the tables placed just underneath and also to the general space.
- Research
- A qualitative type of research benefiting mostly from the observation of social areas of interest has been conducted. The Research Objectives have been to concentrate on aspects such as lighting design, material selection and interior ambiance formation. So what has been designed as a result of this process has not merely been a lighting fixture; but a lighting fixture supporting the design language, interior atmosphere and design concept in a wholesome attitude.
- Inspiration
- This product was designed to be used in commercial spaces. It was meant to look as modern and simple as possible. Hanging detail and all cabling have been concealed to minimize visual clutter. It is a simple but elegant product. It stands out in the space with its simple design and shiny finish. The use of the Edison bulb was meant to add a sensible and nostalgic touch to the otherwise modern product.
- Patents
- A design registration certificate numbered: 2017 08773 was issued in my name (Kurt Orkun Aktas) by the Turkish Patent Institute. The certificate date was Oct. 2, 2018 and thereby verifies that all design rights have been registered to my name for the following five years starting from Dec. 27, 2017.

Design Interview about Aktas Lamp
This design was among a series of interior details that I had produced for a corporate firm in 2017. At the time I was in search of an elegant light fixture and thought it best to design the piece instead of buying already built items.
I wanted and I think that I have achieved two goals during the design phase. first of all I wanted the lightsource to be centered 50cm away from the wall, secondly I wanted to achieve the lightest framework to support it. I had designed certain decorative elements on the wall so this fixture was aimed to look like a valuable jewelry on the already decorated wall.
This design has been produced and is in use in Turkey's biggest pastry shop in Ankara. This design has also been awarded by A' Design and has gained international recognition. The next step for this design would be to design the family of fixtures for this design pattern and to do this in various unit colors.
This design was prepared within an hours' time, within the duration of four months of site contract efforts.
The formation of the design had been totally intuitive. I had already prepared a language of design for the interior space and instead of selecting a readily made fixture, designing the unit and having it manufactured seemed to be the best choice.
The design rights of this product belong to me. I have registered the design rights of the product in Turkey.
No, the item was manufactured strictly according to my shop drawings
The target customer is A+ segment of restaurants, bakeries or other similar commercial enterprises.
The design is a mixture of humble but yet elegant materials and finishes in a similar manner to jewelry design.
I used a simple paper and a pen at the site and then prepared the manufacture drawings in AutoCAD.
After the design was finished the light fixtures were manufactured by a light fixture producing firm in İstanbul.
The linear design language in which the fixture was designed had been used in the design of walls, ceilings, furniture, refrigerated cabinet fronts and doors.
We had to hand-produce the glass cylinder as there were no existing parts that matched our requirements. This had its effects on both the price and the manufactury duration of the whole product.
I had put so much effort in the design of the facility that I thought it deserved better recognition. I chose A' Design solely and presented my works. I am content from the results of this almost year-long duration of the competition's meticulous efforts.
I would like to thank in special, the owner of the facility Mr. Reyhan Haciosmanoglu for his continuous support through all stages of the process, who has made possible all that has been built. My only deepest regret has been that unfortunately, Mr. Haciosmanoglu who had been a dear friend of mine, did not live long enough to see this significant achievement. He had passed away in February 2020. Undoubtedly, this award would have made him proud from all that we had achieved together.
