Production Technology
The Älskar prototype was crafted by Cassily, using a combination of traditional craftsmanship and technology. The main production method involved bending plywood to achieve the Ginkgo leaf-inspired form. After tracing down the shape, a hand saw was used to cut out the design, followed by precision sanding for a refined finish. Rounded edges were then created using a router for a smooth, inviting aesthetic. The legs were CNC-machined, adding a touch of modern precision to the overall design. This synthesis of traditional and advanced techniques ensured the prototype's accurate representation of Älskar's unique and organic design.
Design Challenge
The most challenging aspect was blending organic inspiration with functional design. Creatively, finding the right balance between the Ginkgo leaf aesthetic and ergonomic comfort posed obstacles. Historically, breaking away from conventional chair designs required overcoming ingrained perceptions. Socially, meeting diverse user preferences and expectations added complexity. Externally, navigating production limitations and ensuring eco-friendly materials aligned with contemporary norms. Technologically, integrating CNC machining while preserving handcrafted details presented a delicate challenge. Overcoming these hurdles demanded a harmonious fusion of creativity, adaptability, and a keen understanding of evolving design landscapes.
Project Duration
The project started in January 2022 in Los Angeles, California, and finished in April 2022 in Los Angeles.
Operation Flow
Älskar is easy to use—simply settle in and relax. The chair's transformation lies in its inviting shape, inspired by Ginkgo leaves. The interaction is effortless; you'll feel embraced by its smooth curves. The keyframes are the gentle lines and rounded edges, creating a comfortable and welcoming experience. Älskar outperforms with its blend of nature-inspired aesthetics and comfort, providing a unique and enjoyable seating experience. Its thoughtful design ensures a better performance, making it a standout piece in both form and function.

Design Interview about Alskar Lounge Chair

The Älskar lounge chair is a testament to the harmonious fusion of nature and modern living spaces. It's a design that nurtures a feeling of well-being and reconnects us with the natural world. Inspired by the graceful forms of Ginkgo leaves, the chair vividly expresses the organic beauty of nature, inviting us to rediscover our connection with the natural world in our daily lives. It's a design that speaks to our innate desire for harmony and tranquility and brings nature's beauty into our homes.

As I designed the Älskar lounge chair, I focused on seamlessly integrating natural beauty and comfort into modern residential spaces. My goal was to blend organic aesthetics with ergonomic comfort, ensuring that the chair looks beautiful and provides a relaxing and supportive space for users to unwind. I wanted Älskar to be more than just a piece of furniture; I wanted it to be a statement of inspired design, enhancing any living space's overall ambiance and well-being.

My vision for the Älskar lounge chair involves expanding its presence in residential and commercial markets. I would like to collaborate with furniture manufacturers to bring Älskar into more expansive production, ensuring it reaches a broader audience. Moreover, I am eager to explore different materials and finishes, offering diverse options that cater to various aesthetic preferences and interior design styles, enhancing the versatility and appeal of the Älskar collection. For example, I envision producing the chair in cast plastic with a metal base, offering a modern and durable alternative to the original design. This approach opens up numerous possibilities for customization, allowing for a broader range of colors, finishes, and textures to suit different interior design styles and preferences.
I am also interested in developing a collection around the Älskar design, incorporating complementary pieces such as side tables, ottomans, and other seating options with the same organic inspiration and ergonomic focus. This collection would provide cohesive design solutions for creating harmonious, nature-inspired living spaces.

The design of the Älskar lounge chair took 15 weeks from concept to completion. The initial nine weeks were dedicated to concept development, during which I explored various ideas, drew inspiration from nature, and refined the design to capture the essence of Ginkgo leaves. It took six more weeks following the concept development to bring the design to life.

The Älskar lounge chair design was born from personal inspiration rather than a commissioned project. I wanted to craft a piece of furniture that effortlessly blends natural elements into contemporary living spaces, nurturing a feeling of balance and wellness. I intended to cater to the increasing need for people to re-establish daily connections with nature, particularly in urban settings where such opportunities are scarce. This project enabled me to delve into the fusion of nature and design, pushing the limits of conventional furniture aesthetics while emphasizing ergonomic comfort.

I am currently in the prototype stage with the Älskar lounge chair and exploring various options for its production. My primary goal is to see this design reach a broader audience, so I am open to collaborating with established furniture manufacturers who share my vision for quality and innovation. I am considering selling and leasing the production rights to ensure the chair is produced to the highest standards and made widely available.
On the other hand, I am also contemplating producing the Älskar lounge chair independently. This approach would allow me to control the manufacturing process completely, ensuring that every detail aligns with my original vision and quality expectations. Producing the chair myself would also enable me to experiment with different materials and finishes, such as cast plastic with a metal base, to offer a variety of options to consumers.

Creating the Älskar lounge chair was a heartfelt endeavor born out of a longing to craft a furniture piece that harmonizes the natural world with contemporary living spaces. I aspired to design a lounge chair that evokes a sense of comfort and well-being, beckoning individuals to unwind in a space that seamlessly merges the natural and the modern. The Älskar lounge chair epitomizes my dedication to crafting designs that are visually captivating and deeply rooted in the natural world, nurturing a harmonious and enriching living environment.

I've been deeply inspired by several influential designers and their work while creating the Älskar lounge chair. Hans Wegner's elegant and functional furniture designs, which flawlessly blend form and function, have had a profound impact on my design approach. His ability to create pieces that are not only aesthetically pleasing but also ergonomically comfortable has been a guiding light for me in creating the Älskar lounge chair.
Isamu Noguchi's sculptural approach to furniture design and his emphasis on organic forms have resonated deeply with my vision for Älskar. His skill in drawing inspiration from nature and seamlessly integrating it into his designs has encouraged me to explore the natural beauty of Ginkgo leaves and incorporate their graceful curves into my work.
Alvar Aalto's innovative use of plywood and his talent for blending organic forms with modernist principles have also influenced my approach to designing the Älskar lounge chair. His designs, which often reflect a harmonious relationship between human beings and their environment, align closely with my design philosophy.
The principles of Scandinavian design, characterized by simplicity, minimalism, and functionality, have also played a significant role in shaping the Älskar lounge chair. The clean lines and use of natural materials commonly found in Scandinavian furniture have inspired me to create a timeless and modern design that emphasizes the beauty of natural forms and materials.

The chair is designed for individuals who appreciate the fusion of nature-inspired aesthetics and modern functionality in their living spaces, including Urban Dwellers, Interior Designers and Architects, Design Enthusiasts, Eco-conscious Consumers, and Comfort Seekers.

The Älskar lounge chair is very special to me, blending my inspiration from nature with comfort and craftsmanship. It is not only visually appealing but also prioritizes exceptional comfort, with contours and the most appropriate angles that support the body and promote relaxation.

This name, "Älskar." is rooted in the Swedish word for "love," chosen to symbolize the deep intention of promoting well-being, comfort, and emotional connection within living spaces. It captures the essence of creating a piece that people will cherish, bringing warmth and harmony into their homes. Similar to how the design of the chair draws inspiration from the natural beauty of Ginkgo leaves, the name Älskar embodies a love and admiration for nature.

While working on the Älskar lounge chair project, I used a mix of traditional and modern design tools. Hand-drawing and sketching helped me explore and refine the organic forms inspired by Ginkgo leaves. CAD software allowed for precise adjustments and 3D modeling, while CNC machining and traditional woodworking tools were used in the prototyping stage. I also relied on rendering software to create realistic visualizations of the chair in various settings and materials for presentations to potential manufacturers and clients.

The Älskar lounge chair is special for its seamless integration of nature-inspired aesthetics with ergonomic comfort. Drawing inspiration from the elegant forms of Ginkgo leaves, the chair features smooth curves and rounded edges that evoke the natural beauty of these leaves, creating a visually striking and inviting seating experience. This organic design not only enhances the aesthetic appeal of any living space but also fosters a sense of tranquility and well-being, making users feel more connected to nature.

As the designer of the Älskar lounge chair, I primarily led the design and development process. Still, I also collaborated with several individuals who brought specialized technical skills and expertise to the project. A key part of the process involved working with a CNC machinist to create the precision-machined metal legs of the chair.
Additionally, I consulted with ergonomic experts to ensure that the chair provided optimal support and weight distribution. Their insights helped refine the chair's dimensions and contours to enhance user experience and well-being.

The creation of my Älskar lounge chair was shaped by the thoughtful incorporation of technology. CAD software facilitated precise 3D modeling and design refinement, ensuring visual appeal and ergonomic comfort. CNC machining played a pivotal role in crafting the chair's legs with utmost accuracy and intricate details, complementing the natural curves of the seat. Advanced prototyping tools allowed for material exploration, enabling the consideration of various finishes such as bent plywood and cast plastic with metal bases. Rendering software provided lifelike visualizations to communicate the design to potential manufacturers and clients effectively. These technologies played a significant role in bringing the chair to life.

To ensure that the chair met both aesthetic and functional goals, I conducted a comprehensive qualitative study focused on user experience and aesthetic preferences. This research included online surveys and in-person interviews to gather insights into how users connect with nature in their living spaces and what elements evoke a sense of comfort and tranquility. Observational studies within residential settings helped to understand user interactions with furniture further. Mood boards were also used to capture and analyze participants' design preferences (my favorite), leading to a design that consistently evoked positive emotional responses and a strong connection to nature.

Creating the Älskar lounge chair was a journey filled with numerous obstacles. Balancing the organic, nature-inspired aesthetics of the Ginkgo leaf with ergonomic comfort was a significant challenge. I had to refine and iterate the design to achieve the perfect balance. Forming the shells of the chair was particularly difficult, and it required innovative methods to achieve the desired shape. Integrating traditional craftsmanship with modern CNC machining techniques to achieve precise details and a smooth finish was also complex.

I decided to submit the Älskar lounge chair to international design competitions to gain broader recognition and validate my work within the global design community. After investing significant time and effort into the process, I wanted to showcase the design to a broader audience and see how it measured up against other innovative creations worldwide.

Designing the Älskar lounge chair was a deeply impactful journey that enriched my skills and insight as a designer. One of the most valuable lessons I gained was the significance of harmonizing beauty with utility. Crafting a visually captivating piece that also delivers ergonomic support demanded meticulous attention to detail and continuous refinement. I also broadened my understanding of materials and production methods.

I want to emphasize the emotional and environmental impact of the Älskar lounge chair. It's not just about its looks and comfort - sustainability was a key consideration in its design. I chose eco-friendly materials and production methods to minimize its environmental footprint.

Customization is another important aspect. Älskar can be adapted to various materials and finishes, allowing for a wide range of styles to suit different interiors and personal preferences. This flexibility ensures that the chair can meet diverse aesthetic and functional needs.

Lastly, I am committed to continuing this journey of innovative design. Creating Älskar has inspired me to explore new projects that push the boundaries of traditional furniture design while remaining grounded in the principles of sustainability, comfort, and emotional resonance. I am excited to share more of these future endeavors with the design community and beyond.

Grand Interview about Alskar Lounge Chair

Of course! I’d love to share the heartfelt inspiration behind the Alskar Lounge Chair. The design is deeply rooted in the elegant, organic shape of the Ginkgo leaf. Its simplicity and grace resonate with many of us, and I aimed to encapsulate that soothing quality within this chair. I was particularly inspired by the leaf’s fan-like shape and gentle curves, which evoke a sense of flow and movement—qualities that can truly enhance our spaces and experiences. As I created the chair, I focused on its curves and structure to reflect how a Ginkgo leaf fans out, subtly broadening as it extends. This approach creates a beautiful visual effect and invites you in, drawing your attention along the chair's smooth lines. The result is a shape that feels both organic and balanced, reminiscent of the way a Ginkgo leaf gracefully appears to float through the air.I understand how important comfort is in our lives, so I wanted the chair to offer a sense of natural ease as well. The wide, embracing curves are designed to support your body, while the gently sloping arms and backrest reflect the open and welcoming nature of the Ginkgo leaf. I hope that anyone sitting in this chair feels a sense of calm and tranquility, much like the peace we find in nature.Ultimately, the Ginkgo leaf was a guiding influence for the aesthetics and functionality of the Alskar Lounge Chair. My goal was to create a pleasing piece and provide a warm, comforting experience that connects us with the world around us. This heartfelt blend of organic design and comfort allows the Alskar Lounge Chair to stand out.

Creating the Alskar Lounge Chair by merging traditional craftsmanship with modern CNC machining has been a deeply rewarding experience, albeit not without its challenges. One of the main challenges I faced was the need to preserve the natural, flowing aesthetic inspired by the Ginkgo leaf while adhering to the precise requirements of CNC machining. When I was working on the prototype, I used a hand saw to shape the body, allowing me to feel the curves and connect with the material in a meaningful way. However, as I began to transition to CNC production, concerns arose about how the curvature of the connecting parts between the CNC-cut legs and the hand-shaped body would hold together. I worried about the tolerances and whether slight mismatches could disrupt the seamless look I envisioned. To tackle this, I took extra care to adjust the digital model, to ensure that the CNC process wouldn’t produce rigid lines or visible gaps. It was a process of trial and error, making numerous refinements to balance the precision with the organic flow that defines the chair’s character. I genuinely wanted to create a piece that blended the heart of handcrafted work with the precision of technology, and it was fulfilling to see that vision come to life. After the CNC machining, I dedicated time to the hand-finishing process, knowing how essential it was to soften the edges and bring out the warmth of the wood. This step was crucial to ensure that each chair felt not just beautiful but also inviting and organic. While it required a lot of effort, I believe that taking the time for this added touch helped to honor the unique, tactile quality that handcrafted elements contribute to the overall experience.

My exploration of the deep emotional connections between nature and our living spaces played a crucial role in shaping the Alskar Lounge Chair. The nest-shaped base was born from this heartfelt idea. Nests in the natural world symbolize shelter, protection, and warmth, and I wanted the chair's base to resonate with these comforting feelings. By creating a stable, enveloping foundation, my aim was to instill a sense of being gently cradled, as if the chair itself offered a safe haven. This design choice was made to promote relaxation and tranquility, allowing users to truly feel “at home” within its embrace. The chair's softly curving back and arms also reflect this emotional bond with nature. Drawing inspiration from the gentle shapes of leaves and branches, the design gradually opens outward, inviting you to settle in and unwind. This careful, inviting form mimics the way branches spread to provide shelter, creating an atmosphere of warmth without feeling restrictive. By integrating these natural curves, I sought to cultivate a space that feels both comforting and expansive, allowing users to experience a sense of freedom alongside their comfort.Every design choice, from the supportive base to the welcoming silhouette, was guided by this emotional connection to nature. I envisioned the Alskar Lounge Chair as more than just functional furniture; it’s a nurturing space that helps people reconnect with nature and find a moment of inner calm, even amidst the hustle of modern life.

Transforming the delicate beauty of the Ginkgo leaf into the Alskar Lounge Chair was a meaningful journey. The leaf's soft, fan-like shape inspired me to create a warm and inviting chair that encourages relaxation. I focused on the fluid contours of the Ginkgo leaf, designing wide, embracing arms and a softly shaped backrest that wrap around the user, fostering a sense of connection and warmth. Every design choice aimed to provide nurturing support, allowing one to sink in and feel at ease.To enhance the chair's inviting nature, I rounded each edge and transition, ensuring a harmonious balance without harsh angles. This design cradles the body gently, echoing how a leaf nurtures its stem. Understanding ergonomics was crucial, as the smooth curves were crafted to evoke comfort and safety. The Alskar Lounge Chair transcends being just furniture; it becomes a tranquil haven infused with the grace of nature, designed to nurture both body and spirit.

In my qualitative research, I discovered a deep yearning among users for designs that prioritize comfort while fostering a connection to nature. Many participants shared their heartfelt appreciation for natural forms, expressing how these elements bring a soothing presence into their indoor spaces. This understanding inspired me to create the Alskar Lounge Chair, featuring smooth, organic curves that draw from the gentle shape of the Ginkgo leaf, capturing nature’s serenity. Additionally, the nest-like base was thoughtfully designed to provide a sense of security and grounding, perfectly reflecting users' desire for a peaceful, nature-inspired sanctuary amid their modern living environments.

The dimensions of the Alskar Lounge Chair were thoughtfully designed to harmonize aesthetic charm with cozy comfort. I wanted to create proportions that felt both substantial yet light, ensuring the chair would be a perfect fit in any space, whether large or small. Through sketching wall silhouettes and listening closely to user feedback, I was able to refine the seat width, height, and backrest angle. My goal was to offer optimal support while preserving a gentle, compact silhouette that feels just right for everyone.

I found that using pre-curved molds made a significant difference in the plywood bending process, and I truly wish I’d discovered this sooner. At first, I relied on standard molds, fully aware that they could lead to slight inconsistencies and gaps in the curvature. However, by taking the time to custom-craft pre-curved molds that perfectly matched the Alskar Lounge Chair's intended shape, I achieved a much more consistent and smooth bend. This adjustment not only enhanced the accuracy of the design but also alleviated stress on the material, allowing for cleaner and more seamless transitions. It’s rewarding to see how small changes can lead to remarkable improvements.

The Alskar Lounge Chair is born from my belief in the healing power of nature, especially after the prolonged time many of us have spent indoors. By integrating natural elements like the gentle curves inspired by the Ginkgo tree, this chair aims to evoke a sense of rebirth and renewal. My hope is that it not only provides comfort but also brings the soothing essence of nature into our homes. In a world where we often feel disconnected, I aspire for this design to pave the way for a movement where furniture goes beyond mere functionality, helping to uplift spirits and foster a deeper connection to the beauty of the outside world, right from our living spaces.

I truly value the feedback I received while developing the Alskar Lounge Chair, as it has been essential in creating a piece that genuinely meets people’s needs. Many of the early testers shared their thoughts, appreciating the chair’s organic curves while also expressing concern that the initial seat depth felt a little shallow for extended use. I completely understand how important comfort is, especially during longer sitting sessions. In response to their insights, I modified the seat depth to offer better support, ensuring that everyone can feel embraced by design and at ease for those extended moments of relaxation.

Building on the success of the Alskar Lounge Chair, I envision taking this nature-inspired approach further by exploring new organic forms, materials, and sustainable techniques in future designs. My goal is to deepen the connection between indoor spaces and the natural world, integrating elements that evoke tranquility and balance. I plan to experiment with additional botanical inspirations and biomorphic forms to create pieces that feel like extensions of nature, adapting seamlessly to different functions and environments.Additionally, I’m intrigued by the idea of bridging contrasting materials—such as industrial metals, which often convey a cold, hard feel—with softer, warmer forms. I want to explore how these contrasts can coexist harmoniously, sparking a dynamic interaction between materials that highlights their inherent strengths and creates unexpected warmth and character in contemporary furniture.
