About Arc One Lounge Chair
Arc One is a lounge seating solution formed from a single bent sheet metal surface without welding or assembly. The structure reduces production complexity and cost while enabling stackable storage and transport. A removable leather cushion allows color variation, easy renewal and extended product lifespan through long term adaptability.
Deniz Özdemir's Arc One Lounge Chair represents a compelling synthesis of industrial material vocabulary and domestic comfort traditions, positioning itself within a lineage of bent metal furniture design that traces conceptual ancestry through modernist experiments with continuous planar forms. The work demonstrates sophisticated understanding of material behavior, exploiting the tensile properties of stainless steel to achieve a structurally self-supporting curve that eliminates the need for traditional joinery or multiple component assembly. This reduction to essential geometric gesture recalls the aspirations of early twentieth-century functionalist design while the incorporation of richly patinated leather cushioning introduces warmth that tempers any potential severity. The button-tufted upholstery technique, itself carrying historical associations with both bourgeois comfort and artisanal craft traditions, creates a dialogue between handwork and industrial precision that enriches the object's cultural resonances. Particularly noteworthy appears the attachment system wherein leather straps wrap the steel backrest panel, securing the circular cushion through visible hardware that celebrates rather than conceals the functional connection between soft and hard elements. The chromatic relationship between warm cognac leather and cool brushed metal establishes a complementary temperature harmony that proves visually satisfying while remaining tonally restrained. The inclusion of a matching ottoman extends the formal vocabulary into a coordinated seating system, while the black leather variant suggests chromatic flexibility within the design framework. One might observe how the continuous curve of the metal frame creates visual dynamism within an otherwise serene composition, the arc simultaneously suggesting movement and stability. Viewers are invited to consider how material honesty and structural clarity might coexist with sensory comfort, and how contemporary furniture design continues to negotiate between industrial capability and human intimacy.

- Production Technology
- The body is manufactured from sheet metal using only laser cutting and CNC bending processes. No welding or mechanical assembly is required. The cushion is separately produced with upholstered leather and designed to be attached onto the metal structure. The flat geometry enables efficient stacking for storage and transport.
- Design Challenge
- The main challenge was achieving structural strength, ergonomic comfort and visual balance using only one sheet metal surface. Precise form development and bending geometry were required to ensure stability and load performance while maintaining minimal material use and a clean industrial aesthetic.
- Project Duration
- The project started in October 2025 in Istanbul and was completed in February 2026. The design was developed as an independent individual project.
- Operation Flow
- The leather cushion can be easily placed, removed or replaced, allowing color changes and maintenance over time. The curved metal form provides ergonomic support while the cushion enhances comfort. Stackable metal bodies simplify storage, handling and transportation, improving operational efficiency.
- Research
- Type: Product efficiency, manufacturing and aesthetic design research. Objective: Reduce production cost and logistics volume through a single-piece structure while meeting aesthetic expectations and ensuring a timeless design language. Method: Form studies, bending solutions and stacking scenarios. Results showed reduced complexity, improved transport efficiency, and extended product lifespan through replaceable upholstery.
- Inspiration
- The design explores how maximum performance can be achieved with minimal material and simplified manufacturing. Inspired by a balance of structural clarity and refined geometry, the project translates these principles into a contemporary industrial context. A single continuous metal surface defines both form and function, while the contrast between metal and leather creates a warm yet precise seating experience.

Design Interview about Arc One Lounge Chair
The main idea behind Arc One was to achieve maximum performance through minimal material usage and simplified manufacturing. The design explores how a single bent metal surface can create both structural strength and visual fluidity. The contrast between the industrial clarity of metal and the warmth of leather became the key inspiration for the project.
My main focus was to create a strong aesthetic identity while reducing production complexity. By designing a single-piece structure without welding or mechanical assembly, I aimed to simplify manufacturing while improving storage and transportation efficiency. At the same time, I wanted the chair to have a timeless, sculptural, and refined presence.
I plan to expand Arc One into a broader furniture family with different variations and material options. I also aim to collaborate with international furniture brands to adapt the design for production and bring it to a wider audience.
The project started in October 2025 in Istanbul and was completed in February 2026. Throughout the process, extensive work was carried out on design development, form exploration, ergonomics, production methods, and structural balance.
This project was developed independently. Seeing how many contemporary furniture pieces rely on complex production methods encouraged me to search for a more simplified yet powerful solution. The idea of creating a strong identity through a single continuous surface became the main motivation behind the project.
At the moment, Arc One is an independently developed concept project. In the future, I plan to collaborate with manufacturers for production opportunities and potentially explore licensing options.
Furniture design has always interested me because it combines material behavior, ergonomics, and production technology within a single object. Arc One emerged from my desire to balance industrial manufacturing logic with a more emotional and sculptural form language.
Rather than referencing a specific design directly, I was influenced by modernist and industrial design approaches. Concepts such as structural honesty, simplified geometry, and highlighting the natural character of materials played an important role in shaping the project.
Arc One targets users who appreciate contemporary, timeless, and character-driven furniture. It is designed for individuals and spaces that value a balance between aesthetics and functionality, including residential interiors and premium hospitality environments.
What distinguishes Arc One is its ability to create both structure and visual identity from a single bent metal surface. Without relying on welding or complex assembly details, the design achieves a strong sculptural character while also improving storage and transportation efficiency.
The name “Arc One” refers to the curved and continuous geometry created from a single flowing metal surface. “Arc” represents the fluid structural form, while “One” emphasizes the single-piece construction philosophy of the design.
During the project, digital modeling, form development, and visualization tools were used extensively. Rhino 3D played an important role in surface and form development. In addition, research and trend analysis were conducted regarding contemporary furniture trends, production approaches, and evolving user expectations.
The most unique aspect of the design is its ability to generate both structure and visual identity from a single bent metal surface. While using minimal production elements, the design achieves a refined, distinctive, and character-driven presence while simultaneously improving storage and transportation efficiency.
Arc One was developed as an independent project. Throughout the process, technical research was conducted regarding production methods, metal bending techniques, and material behavior. The project was carried out individually from concept development to the final presentation stage.
Technology played an important role in both the production approach and form development of the design. CNC bending and laser cutting technologies enabled the single-piece manufacturing logic, while digital modeling tools helped refine precise surface transitions and structural balance.
The project involved research focused on manufacturing efficiency, material usage, ergonomics, and logistics. Metal bending limitations, transportation efficiency, and stackable structure scenarios were analyzed and integrated into the form development process. Research was also conducted on contemporary furniture production methods and user expectations.
One of the main challenges was achieving both structural strength and ergonomic comfort using a single metal surface. Extensive work was carried out on surface transitions, bending angles, and structural balance in order to maintain stability while preserving the visual lightness of the form.
I believed that Arc One offered not only functionality but also a strong design language and a contemporary approach. Submitting it to an international platform felt like an opportunity to present the project’s production logic, aesthetics, and innovative qualities to a wider design audience.
This project helped me further develop the idea of achieving maximum impact with minimal material usage. I gained valuable experience regarding the relationship between manufacturing logic, metal behavior, ergonomics, and form balance. It also strengthened my understanding of how simplification can enhance the overall design quality.
Arc One is not only a seating object, but also the result of a design approach that seeks balance between manufacturing efficiency, simplified construction, and timeless aesthetics. The project aims to introduce a distinctive furniture language that brings character to contemporary interiors, creates a strong identity, and adapts naturally to different environments.
