About Blossoms Wall Art Installation

In a sprawling 5000 sq ft apartment in South Mumbai, the design team sought to elevate the dining area with striking wall art. The result was a series of 50 handcrafted glass-like flowers in bold pink and orange tones. Strategically placed to interact with both natural and artificial light, these semi-transparent pieces create dynamic shadows that shift throughout the day. The installation transforms the dining space into a captivating visual experience, turning it into a true centerpiece of the home.

Deval Ambani's Blossoms Wall Art Installation positions itself within the contemporary studio art glass and mixed-media sculpture traditions that have increasingly explored the translation of organic botanical forms into permanent artistic materials over recent decades, drawing upon historical precedents ranging from Art Nouveau's naturalistic decorative vocabularies through mid-century studio glass pioneers who first recognized the aesthetic potential of translucent polymers and resins as sculptural media capable of capturing and transforming light in ways that echo both natural phenomena and jeweler's craft, the work demonstrates sophisticated technical facility in its material handling, evident in the seamless color gradations that transition from saturated warm oranges and corals through delicate lavenders and periwinkles within individual petal forms, suggesting either masterful control of pigment suspension within casting processes or meticulous layering techniques that build chromatic complexity through translucent strata, the compositional achievement lies in the installation's ability to create dynamic visual interest through asymmetrical distribution while maintaining overall harmony, each bloom element carefully scaled and positioned to create both individual focal moments and collective rhythmic flow that guides viewer attention in gentle circular patterns across the installation field, the chromatic sophistication deserves particular recognition, as the artist navigates the challenging territory of split-complementary harmony between warm and cool passages without allowing either temperature range to dominate, instead achieving equilibrium that suggests both the vitality of living blossoms at peak bloom and the serene preservation of beauty suspended outside temporal decay, formally, passages of exceptional accomplishment include the delicate edge transitions where material thickness diminishes to near-transparency, creating haloes of diffused color that soften the sculptural presence and integrate the three-dimensional elements with their spatial environment, and the textural articulation that enriches surfaces with raised patterns mimicking natural details such as water droplets, pollen structures, or cellular patterns visible on actual flower petals, these formal choices serve expressive ends by evoking the ephemeral delicacy of fresh botanical specimens while simultaneously asserting the enduring permanence of artistic materials, creating productive tension between transience and preservation that invites meditation on beauty's relationship to time, thematically, the installation appears to explore the intersection of natural organic growth patterns and human creative intervention, celebrating the aesthetic achievements possible when artistic vision translates observed natural phenomena through contemporary material technologies, the work invites consideration of how we preserve and honor fleeting natural beauty, whether through photography, dried flower arrangements, or as here through sculptural interpretation that captures essential formal and chromatic characteristics while transforming perishable organic matter into permanent artistic form, potential iconographic references include the long tradition of flower painting and botanical illustration that has documented plant life across centuries, contemporary environmental awareness that heightens appreciation for natural forms, and perhaps Eastern aesthetic traditions that find profound meaning in the contemplation of blossoms as symbols of beauty's temporary nature and life's precious brevity, the installation seems to participate in broader contemporary art conversations regarding craft technique elevation, material innovation, the dissolution of traditional hierarchies between fine art and decorative arts, and the continued relevance of nature as artistic subject and formal inspiration despite increasing urbanization and digital mediation of experience, how does this installation's material permanence alter your relationship to floral beauty, and what emotional or psychological needs might be served by surrounding ourselves with idealized botanical forms that neither grow nor decay but exist in perpetual chromatic radiance?

Production Technology
The Blossoms are handcrafted using mixed media, featuring exquisite hues, textures, and a unique glass-like effect. Unlike molded pieces, each one is individually made, adding vibrancy to any space while being easy to maintain. They are broadly made in three different sizes. They are mounted with durable SS 304 metal fittings with a PVD rose gold finish to prevent rust. Designed to resemble elegant stems rather than hardware, these fittings seamlessly blend into the artwork. The height of the fittings is varied to enjoy the different levels in the artwork. The flowers were placed from 6ft upwards on the wall to avoid anyone bumping into it.
Design Challenge
The biggest challenge was finding a material that felt delicate yet was not as fragile as glass. After extensive research and testing, we developed a unique mixed-media composition that balanced durability with elegance. Achieving the right translucency and texture required multiple prototypes. Production was another hurdle, as handcrafted elements needed precision and consistency. Socially, we aimed to reintroduce artisanal craftsmanship in a market dominated by mass production.
Project Duration
The project started in March 2022 and finished in June2022
Operation Flow
This piece is designed for effortless interaction. It can be easily mounted using durable fittings that blend seamlessly into the design. Light plays beautifully on its surface, enhancing its vibrant hues and glass like textures. Unlike conventional decor, it adds depth and movement to a space, transforming with different angles and lighting. Its handmade nature ensures uniqueness, making each piece a statement. Built for longevity, it resists rust and remains easy to clean and maintain.
Research
This project explores experimental design research, focusing on innovative material combinations for durable, striking decor. We found no existing solution balancing delicacy and durability like glass. Using material experimentation and user feedback, we refined aesthetics and function. Handmade blossoms proved more engaging than mass-produced decor, interacting beautifully with light. This research supports artisanal craftsmanship, reinforcing the value of personalized, maintenance-friendly art.
Inspiration
Nature has always been a profound source of inspiration The dining room the soul of a home where memories are made had to be a showstopper We drew from nature's vibrancy choosing flowers in full bloom larger than life exuding energy. Each handcrafted piece is unique like in nature, interacts with light creating dynamic shadows and reflections. The result, an everevolving experience that sparks emotion and transforms the space into a visual delight.

Design Interview about Blossoms Wall Art Installation

The Blossoms Collection is founded on the belief that art is a meditative, spiritual act. It draws inspiration from nature’s quiet strength — flowers, light and organic forms that embody renewal and resilience. Each piece captures the essence of blooming, translating that moment of life and harmony into a glass-like, layered surface that radiates calm and beauty.

My focus was to create an artwork that emanates serenity through light, translucency, and movement. I wanted the viewer to feel the emotion of a bloom — that sense of quiet joy and healing — rather than simply observe it. The goal was to design something that merges fine art, craftsmanship, and emotion seamlessly within architectural space.

The Blossoms Collection will evolve into larger, site-specific installations and limited-edition artworks for interiors. It will take shape in various forms — from sculptural wall pieces to illuminated installations — each exploring new materials and spatial expressions. Over time, the series will grow beyond Blossoms, expanding into new nature-inspired themes that continue the dialogue between light, texture, and emotion. Each piece will remain handmade and one-of-a-kind, with plans to showcase globally through collaborations with architects, hotels, and curated design exhibitions.

The concept matured over several months of exploration. From initial sketches to material testing, each artwork undergoes multiple experimental layers before achieving the desired balance of depth, light and translucency. Every step of the process is intuitive and meditative, requiring time for the material and emotion to settle into harmony.

The collection was a self-initiated exploration. It was born from my personal dialogue with nature and light — an inner need to express stillness, fragility and hope. Though many works are later commissioned, Blossoms began as an act of creative reflection rather than a brief.

All pieces are produced exclusively at OBLIQ. The proprietary glass-like medium and finishing techniques are developed in-house to preserve their uniqueness. For large-scale projects, we collaborate with material specialists, but the making remains entirely within our studio to maintain creative integrity.

I wanted to bring together the language of fine art and the tactility of design. Working with a translucent, glass-like material allowed me to express light, depth and fragility — qualities that mirror the delicate nature of blossoms — and to create art that interacts dynamically with interiors.

No direct designer or work influenced the Blossoms Collection. It belongs to a broader lineage of contemporary minimalism and nature-inspired abstraction but evolved independently through personal experimentation and spiritual reflection.

The collection is created for art collectors, interior designers and clients who value originality, emotion and craftsmanship. It appeals to those seeking serene, statement pieces for luxury homes, boutique hotels or wellness-inspired interiors.

Its distinctiveness lies in the illusion of glass without using glass. Each piece is made with a custom translucent material that captures and diffuses light softly, creating a luminous depth and fluidity impossible to replicate. Combined with the spiritual narrative behind each work, this gives the collection its meditative and ethereal quality.

“Blossoms” symbolises the process of unfolding — both in nature and within oneself. It signifies growth, renewal and the beauty of impermanence, perfectly reflecting the concept of evolving light and life embedded in each artwork.

The works are hand-layered using a proprietary translucent medium on engineered surfaces. Concept sketches and scale visualisations are done digitally, but the final textures and finishes are entirely handcrafted to preserve their organic flow and individuality.

The seamless fusion of material illusion and emotion. The surface appears as glass but carries a warmth and softness that glass cannot. It embodies both fragility and strength — a reflection of nature’s balance and the inner calm it evokes.

The Blossoms Collection was conceptualised and executed by me, with collaboration from material and installation specialists for larger works. The metal fittings used for mounting are specially handcrafted by metal artists to complement the organic delicacy of the pieces.

Technology supported the process in material development, digital planning and scaling for large installations. However, the spirit of the work remains entirely handcrafted — technology enhances precision but never replaces the human touch.

Yes — through tactile and visual research. I experimented with how various translucent mediums interact with light, colour layering and texture. The outcome is an optical softness that feels alive, responding to the ambient light of each space.

The primary challenge was achieving the perfect glass-like translucency without using actual glass. It required months of experimenting with materials and layering techniques to reach the right strength, clarity and glow. Scaling the pieces while maintaining their handcrafted feel was another complex aspect.

Submitting to the A’ Design Award was a way to share this new material language and spiritual design approach with a global audience. The competition celebrates innovation and emotional depth in design — qualities that are at the heart of Blossoms.

This collection taught me patience, balance and trust in the process. I learned that light and material, like emotions, need space to breathe. It reaffirmed my belief that art can heal and connect — that design can be both meditative and transformative.

The Blossoms Collection is more than an artwork — it is an evolving experience. Each piece continues to “grow” in dialogue with the space and the light around it. My vision is for every Blossoms installation to serve as a moment of pause — a reminder that growth and beauty can emerge quietly, from within.
