About Book Chair
Book is a chair that can also hold and display an open book. The design is a sculptural study in geometry and symmetry, and each angle is carefully calculated. Book is made of solid white oak and European walnut. A central oak disc anchors the frame where three angled legs converge. Four brass rods relieve tension at key junctions and add stability. Every surface is hand finished with natural oils, which give a matte texture and keep the feel of the wood. The seat height is 450 millimeters.
Book Chair by Cassiano Saldanha engages the enduring conversation between functional necessity and sculptural expression that has animated progressive furniture design since the early twentieth century, situating itself within traditions established by modernist pioneers who sought to reconcile industrial logic with humanistic warmth, this work demonstrates particular affinity with Scandinavian design philosophies that emerged in the postwar period, where natural materials, structural transparency, and organic form language coalesced into a distinctive aesthetic proposition valuing craftsmanship, material honesty, and understated elegance, the design achieves compositional sophistication through asymmetrical balance, where two independent seating platforms extend outward from a central support structure in calculated cantilever, their projecting masses generating visual tension resolved through precise proportional calibration and the anchoring weight of the vertical elements, the joinery system, deliberately articulated rather than concealed, speaks to an ethos of structural legibility where means of construction become integral to aesthetic expression, a philosophy consonant with Arts and Crafts revival movements and the truth-to-materials doctrine that has guided thoughtful makers across generations, chromatic and textural richness emerges entirely from the walnut itself, its grain patterns varying from subtle linear striations to more dramatic figuration, surface treatment appears minimal, likely hand-rubbed oil or low-luster protective finish that preserves the wood's inherent tactile appeal and breathing capacity while providing durability, the integration of a curved biomorphic element within the rectilinear framework introduces organic counterpoint, this sculptural insertion suggesting influences from mid-century Brazilian modernism or the sensuous curves championed by Aalto and Saarinen, functionally the divided seating surface invites varied inhabitation, accommodating different postures and body positions while the backrest provides lumbar support scaled to human proportions, the work thus navigates between sculptural autonomy and ergonomic responsiveness, neither purely art object nor purely utilitarian seat but rather a synthesis that honors both domains, technically the cantilevered platforms demonstrate engineering confidence, their projection into space without visible understructure beneath requiring careful load calculation and robust joinery capable of withstanding repeated stress cycles, the piece rewards close examination of joint intersections, edge treatments, and surface transitions where the maker's hand reveals itself in subtle chamfers, precise tolerances, and finish quality, thematically Saldanha's design meditates upon balance in multiple registers, the physical equilibrium of asymmetrical masses, the conceptual balance between geometry and organicism, the experiential balance between visual appreciation and bodily use, and the cultural balance between inherited design languages and contemporary innovation, viewers might consider how furniture operates simultaneously as functional infrastructure supporting daily life and as cultural artifact encoding values about materiality, making, beauty, and the relationship between human bodies and designed objects, what does it mean for a chair to assert sculptural presence while maintaining functional humility, how do material choices communicate environmental ethics and craft traditions, and in what ways does thoughtful furniture design elevate everyday experience from mere utility toward something approaching domestic poetry.

- Unique Properties
- The Bookchair is more than a stool or a chair. It is a sculptural study in geometry and symmetry. Every angle is meticulously calculated to bridge the gap between furniture and art. While its 18-inch height offers utility, its true purpose is to cradle an open book, an invitation to slow down and reflect. More than a functional object, it is a quiet gesture of intentionality, designed for those who value both form and the written word.

- Production Technology
- Crafted from solid white oak and European walnut, the Bookchair balances warmth with structural depth. A central oak disc anchors the piece, distributing force where three angled legs converge. For engineered stability, four 1/3" brass rods act as discreet tension relievers at key junctions. Each surface is hand-finished with natural oils, creating a matte, luminous texture that preserves the wood's tactile essence. It is a marriage of meticulous joinery and organic materiality.
- Project Duration
- Conceived in Miami in May 2023, this project was prototyped over two months and completed in July 2023. It is an exclusive one-of-one piece; all remaining prototypes were destroyed in July 2023.
- Operation Flow
- The Bookchair can be used as a normal stool seating functionality, but also can serve as a book display.
- Inspiration
- Guided by geometry and architectural symmetry, the Bookchair is a study in visual clarity. Inspired by Lina Bo Bardi, whose furniture blended modernist rigor with Brazilian vernacular and handcraft. It blends modernist rigor with Brazilian cultural honesty. This piece honors Brazilian modernism through a balance of function and sculptural form. Whether supporting an open book or standing alone, it exists at the intersection of utility and art. An object to be used, and one to be contemplated.
