About Castanea Nectar Chestnut Honey
Castanea Nectar is a packaging design for chestnut honey. A watercolor illustration technique conveys the lightness of chestnut flowers and leaves. The logo uses smooth, slightly viscous lines to suggest the density and richness of chestnut honey, while strict shapes recall the strength of the chestnut tree. A small bee connects the elements of the logo. The honey is presented in a 250 gram glass jar with a label of 125 by 55 millimeters, placed in a box of 85 by 85 by 110 millimeters. The design refers to the chestnut tree as a green symbol of Kyiv.
Castanea Nectar Chestnut Honey by Inna Kovalenko exemplifies contemporary packaging design's renewed engagement with traditional botanical illustration, natural material celebration, and the visual vocabulary of artisanal authenticity that has emerged as a significant counter-aesthetic to mass-production anonymity. The design demonstrates sophisticated understanding of how material juxtaposition communicates value, employing the transparency of glass to reveal product purity, the rough authenticity of unfinished stone to suggest natural origins and handcrafted values, and the warm luster of golden closures to signal premium quality and preservation care. The compositional strategy evidences mastery of still-life arrangement principles descending from Dutch Golden Age traditions, where humble foodstuffs were elevated through careful formal organization, luminous rendering, and symbolic charging of everyday objects with metaphoric weight, here translated into the commercial context of contemporary product photography where similar visual rhetoric must both document and persuade. The chromatic restraint demonstrates color theory sophistication, limiting the palette to warm earth tones and cool neutrals that reinforce the natural provenance narrative while avoiding the chromatic saturation and artificial brightness that might suggest industrial production rather than artisanal harvest. The label design itself merits particular attention for its integration of delicate botanical watercolor illustration depicting chestnut foliage, blossoms, and pollinating bee, executed in a style that references nineteenth-century natural history illustration traditions while maintaining contemporary graphic clarity, creating a visual bridge between historical authentication and present-day design sensibility. This illustrative approach serves multiple communicative functions simultaneously: establishing botanical source identification, suggesting traditional rather than industrial production methods, conveying ecological awareness through the prominent bee motif that has acquired contemporary resonance as symbol of environmental stewardship and sustainable agriculture, and differentiating the product within marketplace contexts through distinctive artistic character. The stone platform staging introduces material texture and geological permanence as counterweight to the ephemeral sweetness of honey, grounding the composition in substantiality and suggesting enduring quality that transcends seasonal consumption. The inclusion of fresh chestnuts in their characteristic spiny green husks and polished mahogany shells provides direct botanical evidence, transforming abstract packaging into a narrative of harvest, processing, and refinement from raw natural material to preserved culinary treasure. The lighting treatment achieves the delicate balance between documentary clarity and atmospheric poetry, providing sufficient illumination to render every surface truthfully while maintaining soft transitions and luminous quality that elevate the subject beyond mere catalog documentation into the realm of contemplative appreciation. The spatial arrangement's ascending diagonal gesture suggests aspiration, quality hierarchy, and the visual journey from raw ingredient through artisanal transformation to finished product, while the generous negative space surrounding the central grouping provides visual breathing room that signals premium positioning and invites unhurried contemplation rather than urgent consumption. The overall design language speaks to contemporary consumer desires for authenticity, transparency, connection to natural origins, artisanal craft values, and products that carry narrative depth beyond functional utility, addressing audiences who seek not merely sweetness but the cultural, ecological, and aesthetic dimensions of food as embodied story. One might consider how this careful orchestration of material, color, form, and botanical reference constructs not simply package design but a complete sensory world that invites viewers to imagine taste, texture, fragrance, seasonal landscape, and the patient labor of both bees and beekeepers in producing this golden substance that humans have treasured since ancient times as nature's perfect sweetness.

- Unique Properties
- For the visual part of the brand, a watercolor illustration technique was chosen to convey the lightness of flowers and leaves. The logo, with its smooth, slightly viscous lines, symbolizes the density and richness of chestnut honey, while the strict shapes hint at the strength and resilience of the tree itself. A small bee, diligently creating this golden treasure, became the connecting element of the logo. The process of creating the brand was not only creative but also deeply symbolic. It was important to preserve the spirit of the city, its history, and its modern dynamics, while giving the world something truly unique.

- Operation Flow
- A gift with chestnut honey is suitable both for a loved one and a business partner. It tells a story of nature, the city, and the craftsmanship invested in its creation.
Thus, chestnut honey is a meaningful gift that brings warmth, health, and a piece of the Ukrainian soul. - Research
- The research involved analyzing the honey market and its unique flavor properties. The task was to come up with a concise name that resonates with the project and ideas for its implementation. This included searching for references and mockups for the work.
- Inspiration
- The chestnut tree has long been a green symbol of Kyiv. In spring, one can endlessly admire its white and pink candle-like blossoms, and in autumn, delight in gathering its shiny, lacquered fruits. Few in the world produce honey from chestnut flowers. This uniqueness inspired the creators of the brand to craft a truly special product.
Every detail — from the name to the label design — was carefully thought out to create a sense of comfort, warmth, and a return home. Thus, chestnut honey became not just a product, but a piece of Kyiv, offering sweet memories and a chance to feel spring again, no matter where you are. - Image Credits

Grand Interview about Castanea Nectar Chestnut Honey
I love combining watercolor with fine black ink lines. Watercolor conveys softness and transparency, while lines add graphic precision. This duo creates harmony between spontaneous color and structured form. Since art school and university, I combined these techniques, which shaped my unique approach in Castanea Nectar Chestnut Honey, expressing both the delicacy of nature and the structured beauty of design.
Each logo element carries meaning: flowing lines symbolize thick, rich honey, while geometric forms represent the chestnut tree’s strength. The small bee unites the product and Kyiv’s spirit. The process was experimental and poetic; I refined lines and shapes until balance emerged between lightness and structure, natural and graphic, so the logo tells both the product’s story and the city’s essence.
I aimed to create simple, familiar packaging that conveys warmth and nature. Delicate watercolor, fine lines, and geometric forms balance the honey’s authenticity with premium gift presentation. This packaging is easy to perceive, evokes emotional connection, and highlights the product’s value and uniqueness.
During a walk in Kyiv, I noticed a beautiful tree near my favorite fountain, inspiring the idea to create honey reflecting the city and its symbol — the chestnut. The project combines love for Kyiv, nature, and warmth. I wanted the design to feel clear, contemporary, and convey the city’s spirit, serenity, and beauty through the Castanea Nectar Chestnut Honey packaging.
The small bee in the logo, created in my favorite engraving technique, symbolizes diligence and care. It highlights the process, like a tiny artist creating honey. The chestnut and bee add emotional symbolism, connecting the product with nature and Kyiv, forming a warm and meaningful story the consumer can relate to.
For the color palette, I chose a white box and a honey-colored jar with a yellow lid, a white label with a black logo, and semi-transparent watercolor elements. White flowers, delicate pink blossoms, and green chestnut leaves add lightness, transparency, and natural freshness. This combination conveys warmth, coziness, and the product’s natural quality, emphasizing the brand identity and the aesthetic harmony of Castanea Nectar Chestnut Honey.
Although my diploma is in interior design, I’ve always loved graphic design. My experience gives me a refined sense of composition, hierarchy, and spatial relationships. I apply balance, rhythm, and proportion principles, structuring projects step by step. This ensures elements — watercolor, chestnut, bee, typography — guide the viewer naturally and create a harmonious visual narrative.
The packaging is a simple cube of natural cardboard with a matte finish, highlighting the honey’s natural warmth. Inside, the jar is securely fixed for protection. A small square card serves as a symbolic reminder of the project’s idea — sincerity, care, and love for Kyiv. This packaging combines simplicity, aesthetics, and function, creating a harmonious gift presentation.
As a teacher at Kyiv Academy of Applied Arts, I share my experience, showing students how ideas evolve from concept to realization. I guide them in structuring projects, balancing creativity with functionality, and telling stories through design. Castanea Nectar Chestnut Honey demonstrates how to create emotional connections between product and audience, inspiring students to develop their own creative solutions.
Castanea Nectar Chestnut Honey shows how modern design can celebrate local heritage. Simple forms, warm colors, and symbolic details convey the region’s story, character, and spirit. I hope it inspires designers to find ideas in their city’s culture and nature, creating packaging that combines beauty, authenticity, and modernity, making products unique and emotionally meaningful.
