About Celina Chair
The Celina Chair is a sustainable design that combines natural materials with precision craftsmanship. Made from legally sourced reforested wood, the chair's organic curves evoke serenity and connection to nature, drawing inspiration from celestial bodies and flowing rivers. Its ergonomic design offers comfort, while its joinery, free from visible screws, highlights craftsmanship. Featuring eco friendly leather and recycled foam, the chair represents a harmonious balance of sustainability, aesthetics, and functionality, offering timeless elegance and effortless interaction in any space.
Within the distinguished tradition of furniture design that bridges artisanal craft with industrial refinement, the Celina Chair by Marcelo Coelho emerges as a thoughtful meditation on the essential nature of seating, distilling the archetypal chair form to its most expressive and functional elements while honoring the inherent beauty of natural materials. The designer appears to engage deeply with mid-century modernist precedents, particularly the organic warmth associated with Scandinavian design philosophy, yet the work possesses a contemporary freshness that suggests an independent creative voice rather than mere stylistic quotation. The technical accomplishment evident in the joinery, where the continuous flow of the rear leg rises to become the armrest support before meeting the backrest frame, demonstrates a sophisticated understanding of wood as a material that can be coaxed into serving multiple structural roles within a single elegant gesture. The chromatic relationship between the darker walnut frame and the lighter caramel leather cushion creates a tonal dialogue that feels both deliberate and natural, as if the materials were always meant to converse in precisely this manner. The proportional system governing the design suggests careful calibration, with the slender armrests and tapered legs contributing an almost unexpected delicacy to a form that might otherwise read as merely sturdy. One observes how the curved backrest provides lumbar acknowledgment while maintaining visual lightness, its horizontal grain orientation subtly expanding the perceived width of this supportive element. The work invites consideration of how furniture design at its finest serves not merely functional requirements but participates in the creation of domestic atmosphere, suggesting that the act of sitting might be elevated through thoughtful design into something approaching ceremony. What qualities of repose and contemplation might such a chair encourage in its eventual occupant?

- Production Technology
- The chair is made from solid reforested wood, legally sourced and suitable for indoor use. The seat features eco-friendly leather and recycled foam. The parts are precisely machined using CNC machines, and the joints are made with only the wood itself and glue, concealing the screws. The wood is sanded multiple times to achieve a smooth finish and treated with a non-toxic varnish.
- Design Challenge
- The main challenge was balancing the durability and hardness of the wood with the need for ergonomic comfort. Achieving a seamless, screw-free design while maintaining structural integrity was a significant technical challenge. Additionally, sourcing sustainable wood and ensuring its compliance with environmental regulations required meticulous planning and coordination with suppliers.
- Project Duration

- Research
- This design project explored sustainable material usage and ergonomic chair design, focusing on the interaction between form, function, and materiality. The research included an investigation of natural forms, inspiring the chair's curves, and investigated local materials with legal commercial permissions. The findings emphasized the importance of sustainable sourcing and ecological design, highlighting the balance between aesthetics, comfort, and environmental responsibility.
- Inspiration
- The Celina Chair draws inspiration from its name, which evokes meanings of heaven and celestial bodies. The design reflects lightness and grace, with flowing lines that evoke a sense of serenity and connection to the sky. Additionally, the chair is influenced by the natural flow of rivers, reminiscent of the intricate patterns formed by waterways seen from above.
