About Chavannes Tea Package

Chavannes is a tea package created as a joint project between Chavannes Tea and the Dunhuang Museum in China. The package belongs to a seven-part series inspired by the ancient Silk Road, and this edition takes Dunhuang in Gansu Province as the main visual theme. Illustrations of the Flying Apsaras of the Dunhuang murals are combined with Wuyi Rock Tea to show the meeting of Silk Road and tea culture. The gift box is made of gray board and special paper with hot stamping, UV and relief printing. Two opposing drawers hold three small boxes each, and every box contains one tea bag.

Yifu Pan's Chavannes Tea Package represents a thoughtful contemporary engagement with historical Buddhist visual traditions, translating sacred iconographic vocabularies into the commercial realm of premium tea packaging while maintaining cultural reverence and spiritual dignity throughout its design execution. The work situates itself within the broader movement of culturally-grounded luxury branding, where heritage references and traditional craftsmanship aesthetics serve to differentiate products within competitive marketplace environments while offering consumers meaningful narratives of authenticity, cultural depth, and mindful consumption. The designer demonstrates sophisticated command of packaging architecture and surface graphic integration, creating a cohesive visual system across multiple package panels that balances informational hierarchy with decorative richness. The compositional achievement here centers on the successful negotiation between maximum chromatic impact through bold magenta field deployment and maximum illustrative detail through intricate golden line work, establishing immediate shelf recognition through color blocking while rewarding closer inspection through ornamental complexity. The central deity figure, rendered with serene facial expression and elaborate headdress construction, anchors the composition within Buddhist iconographic conventions while the surrounding mandala elements, circular medallions, and scrollwork passages create visual rhythm and frame the sacred figure within architectural boundaries that suggest temple spaces and devotional altar contexts. The chromatic sophistication operates on multiple levels: the cool-toned purple ground reads as both luxurious within contemporary color psychology frameworks and spiritually resonant within historical associations of purple with contemplation, mystery, and elevated consciousness, while the warm metallic gold accents provide necessary temperature contrast that prevents chromatic monotony and introduces material luxury coding through their reflective surface quality. The typographic treatment integrates seamlessly with the illustrative program, employing distinctive letterforms that balance readability with stylistic period reference, suggesting historical continuity while maintaining contemporary clarity. The environmental presentation staged against coordinating magenta silk fabric with golden embroidered linear motifs extends the design language beyond the package boundaries, demonstrating how the packaging system participates within broader ritual and domestic display contexts. The work invites consideration of how contemporary commercial design can engage sacred visual traditions respectfully and generatively, neither reducing spiritual iconography to mere decorative pattern nor approaching cultural heritage with such reverential distance that commercial communication objectives remain unmet, but rather finding a productive middle ground where cultural transmission and commercial function achieve integration. How might packaging design serve not only as product protection and brand communication but as cultural preservation and educational opportunity, introducing broader audiences to artistic traditions while maintaining the dignity and context these traditions deserve, and what responsibility attends designers who choose to work within sacred iconographic systems for commercial applications?

Research
The Silk Road Dunhuang Flying Apsaras Series packaging we designed for Chavannes Tea is the first of the seven series we designed for the brand.
From the ancient Sanxingdui to the Terracotta Warriors of Emperor Qin Shi Huang to Dunhuang, it follows the route of the ancient Silk Road from east to west. This packaging is the Dunhuang Flying Apsaras series.
In terms of craftsmanship and illustration, we have made every effort to restore the beauty of the fusion of Dunhuang murals and Chinese tea. It is not only a fusion of culture and visuals, but also a fusion of the ancient Silk Road and tea.
Inspiration
The inspiration for the packaging design of Chavannes Tea comes from the ancient Silk Road that passed through Dunhuang in China. The exquisite style of the packaging is derived from the Flying Apsaras and Buddha statues in the Dunhuang murals, which we combined with Wuyi Rock Tea. We showcase the brand colors imperial purple and the brand symbol to display the overall tone of Chavannes Tea.
