About Chocolate Mouth Artisan Bonbon Chocolates

Chocolate Mouth is a packaging design for an artisan bonbon chocolate brand. The design moves away from traditional and romantic chocolate packaging and uses a bold and playful visual style. Custom illustrations were created for the project, including skeletons, retro tattoo motifs and Austin landmarks. The illustrations form a consistent system that works across several gift box collections and seasonal releases. Two box sizes are used, measuring 250 by 250 by 40 millimeters and 180 by 120 by 40 millimeters. Each box is designed to be kept as a collectible object.

Olha Takhtarova's packaging design for Chocolate Mouth Artisan Bonbon Chocolates engages contemporary visual culture through a sophisticated collision of contradictory aesthetic territories, positioning premium confectionery within alternative subcultural vocabularies rather than conventional luxury signifiers, the work drawing upon rich traditions of American tattoo flash art, rockabilly and psychobilly visual conventions, and the broader revival of mid-century illustration styles that has animated independent design practice over recent decades, the decision to organize each box surface as densely populated allover composition rather than employing minimalist restraint typical of high-end chocolate packaging demonstrates confidence in the target audience's visual literacy and appetite for maximalist graphic environments, the illustrative execution reveals considerable technical facility in line weight control, maintaining consistent contour crispness across dozens of individual motifs while achieving balanced distribution across the rectangular format without creating dead zones or overcrowded passages, the chromatic strategy restricts palette to essential elements allowing the black line work to provide structure while pink and blue grounds establish immediate emotional and thematic territories, pink invoking romantic associations, softness, and Valentine conventions while blue suggests openness, possibility, and perhaps masculine coding that destabilizes the pink box's romantic content, the iconographic program brilliantly navigates between celebration and subversion of romantic consumer occasions, the pink box simultaneously offering and refusing Valentine sentimentality through juxtaposition of hearts and skulls, cupids rendered as skeletons, textual declarations like "Stay Single" and "Love Me" occupying equal visual weight, this strategy expanding the product's occasion versatility while projecting knowing humor and resistance to commercial sentiment even while participating in gifting economies, the blue box extends this tension with phrases like "Keepin' it Weird" and "Break the Rules" that position chocolate consumption as minor rebellion or self-expression rather than pure indulgence, the overall design seemingly addressing consumers who value authenticity, individuality, and products that reflect subcultural affiliations or alternative taste positions, the work participates in broader trends toward artisanal food packaging that rejects corporate polish in favor of handcrafted aesthetic signifiers even when digitally produced, the illustration style evokes screen-printing and hand-drawn traditions despite evident vector precision, this productive tension between artisanal appearance and contemporary production technologies characterizing much successful independent brand visual identity, the density of iconographic content invites extended viewing and discovery, individual motifs emerging with repeated encounters much as traditional tattoo flash sheets reward prolonged examination, the packaging thus functioning as collectible object and cultural artifact beyond its primary protective and presentational purposes, how might the visual strategies employed here expand our understanding of luxury not as refinement and restraint but as richness, density, cultural reference, and the confidence to occupy visual space without apology, what does it mean when premium confectionery adopts the visual languages of permanence, commitment, and bodily inscription associated with tattoo culture to frame ephemeral consumable pleasures, in what ways does this design invite consumers to consider chocolate as participant in identity construction and subcultural belonging rather than mere gustatory indulgence?

Production Technology
A key part of the brand identity is the custom illustration style, created specifically for this project. Every illustration was designed from scratch and brings its own character to the packaging, ranging from playful skeletons and retro tattoos to Austin landmarks and cultural references.
Design Challenge
We created a bold and expressive visual identity that reflects Austin’s culture and the brand’s playful personality.
The project included the development of: Logo Design, Brand Identity System, Packaging Design for multiple chocolate box collections, Custom Illustration System, E-commerce Website Design & Development
Project Duration
Started in August 2025 and finished in February 2026 in Texas, USA
Operation Flow
Our goal was to translate this unique energy into a brand that feels bold, expressive, and a little rebellious, while still celebrating the craft of small-batch chocolate making. The brand needed to capture: the creative and slightly chaotic energy of Austin, a strong visual personality, packaging that feels collectible, fun, and memorable, a visual system that could work across multiple themed gift boxes and seasonal drops.
Research
These illustrations create a visual language that feels alive, unconventional, and unmistakably Austin.
The packaging was designed to function like mini art posters, turning each chocolate box into a collectible object rather than just a container.
To support the brand experience online, we also designed and developed a custom e-commerce website that continues the same visual storytelling. The site reflects the same bold personality - colorful, playful, slightly weird, and unmistakably unique.
Inspiration
The main challenge was to create a brand that would stand out in a market dominated by traditional, elegant, and predictable chocolate packaging.
Chocolate Mouth wanted something different - something that reflects real life, real emotions, and real personalities. Their chocolate is not only for holidays like Valentine’s Day or weddings. It’s for breakups, celebrations, random Tuesdays, and everything in between.
