About Cornices New Chinese Furniture

Cornices is a furniture collection inspired by the eaves of traditional Chinese architecture. The collection includes a seat, a flower stand, a palace lamp and a cabinet rack. Each piece is made of North American black walnut and joined with traditional mortise and tenon structures. The curved eaves form gives the furniture a three-dimensional and layered appearance. The joints are shaped by cutting, carving and polishing, and provide strength and durability. The collection brings traditional Chinese aesthetics into modern interiors.

Wei Jingye's Cornices New Chinese Furniture exemplifies a thoughtful contemporary engagement with historical furniture traditions that transforms functional cabinetry into a meditation on architectural memory and cultural continuity, the piece draws upon centuries of woodworking heritage evident in the distinctive upswept cornice that recalls the graceful eaves of classical pavilion structures yet renders this iconic form with a precision and restraint that speaks to modern sensibilities, the designer demonstrates exceptional material sensitivity in the selection and treatment of the dark hardwood whose rich grain patterns become integral to the aesthetic experience rather than incidental surface decoration, technically the work achieves remarkable balance between the dramatic gesture of the crowning element and the measured proportions of the storage cabinet below with vertical ribbed columns providing visual and structural transition between these distinct formal vocabularies, the inclusion of ceramics on the display shelves transforms the cabinet from mere storage into a curated presentation system that suggests the traditional scholar's study where objects of contemplation held positions of honor, thematically the design explores questions of preservation and translation asking how venerable forms might maintain their spiritual resonance while serving contemporary domestic needs, the open upper shelf beneath the cornice creates an architectural threshold effect that elevates the mundane act of storage into something approaching ritual presentation, iconographically the upturned roof form carries deep cultural associations with protection shelter and cosmic order serving as a miniature architectural cosmos within the domestic interior, viewers might contemplate how this work negotiates between reverence for tradition and the demands of contemporary life asking themselves what elements of cultural heritage they choose to preserve within their own environments.

Design Challenge
The design of the cornices series comes from the design elements of the cornices in ancient Chinese architecture, which represent the combination of spatial extension, structural strength and natural aesthetics, but also faces the challenges of balancing function and aesthetics, the complexity of the production process and market acceptance.
Project Duration
The design had started in Shenyang in January 2024, completed in Shenyang in June 2024, and displayed in the museum of Lu Xun Academy of Fine Arts in Shenyang in June in 2024.
