About Crestridge Residence Single Family Home
Crestridge Residence is a single family home created through the full remodel of a dated tract house. The new layout stays within the existing footprint of 2100 square feet on a down-sloping lot of 21,000 square feet. A vertical louver system in natural iron wood with black oxide hardware gives privacy along the front elevation. A vaulted great room and large windows open to a view of the Los Angeles basin. Two private wings at opposite ends of the house allow family and guests to live together with privacy.
Colega Architects's Crestridge Residence Single Family Home exemplifies the continued vitality of modernist residential design principles as they have evolved within contemporary practice, demonstrating how the movement's foundational commitments to material honesty, spatial transparency, and integration with landscape may be realized through refined contemporary means. The dwelling's emphatic horizontal orientation establishes immediate dialogue with the natural terrain while its floor-to-ceiling glazing dissolves conventional boundaries between interior domestic space and the cultivated landscape beyond. The architects appear to engage thoughtfully with the legacy of post-war residential modernism, particularly the tradition of indoor-outdoor living that flourished in temperate climates during the mid-twentieth century, yet the execution reflects distinctly contemporary sensibilities in its material palette and technical resolution. The strategic placement of rich wood cladding at the composition's flanking volumes creates visual anchoring elements that frame the transparent central living spaces, establishing a rhythm of solid and void that rewards sustained contemplation. The integration of landscape elements, from the precisely aligned concrete stepping stones to the ornamental grass plantings that soften the hardscape edges, suggests a holistic design approach wherein architecture and site are conceived as unified experience. The twilight documentation captures the dwelling at a particularly evocative moment when interior illumination transforms the residence into a luminous presence within its setting, inviting meditation on the relationship between shelter and openness, privacy and transparency, that remains central to residential design discourse. Viewers might consider how the interplay of natural and artificial light shapes their perception of domestic space and its relationship to the surrounding environment.

- Unique Properties
- This project was a full gut remodel. The owners purchased a home that had the square footage and lot size they wanted but lacked the aesthetics, flow and functions they sought. We designed a modern home within the footprint of the existing dated house. Accents such as a louver system for privacy along the front elevation, a vaulted great room with a view in the rear, minimal facade detailing and a warm but clean interior palette brought the old home back to life.
- Dimensions & Packaging
- This is a 2100 SF house on a 21,000 SF down-sloping lot.

- The vertical louver system is detailed in clear grain natural iron wood with black oxide hardware which infills a grey aluminum clad frame. The rear elevation is characterized by the confluence of the vaulted great room volume and the elongated frame, enveloped in warm wood siding on the walls, deck and eave. Contrasting the frame is an inset background of whitewashed wood siding with expansive windows opening to a spectacular view of the L.A. basin.
- Design Challenge
- The challenge of the project was to work within the confines of the existing house and create the functional space that the clients were asking for. We were able to reorganize the interior and create a series of spaces that seamlessly connected to each other and to the exterior. We designed with privacy and hierarchy in mind.
- Project Duration
- Design Commencement May 2017 - Construction Completion August 2019
- Operation Flow
- The family wanted to have a guest quarters but still allowed for privacy from their own bedrooms. The solutions was to design two distinct private wings, at opposite ends of the house, to allow for co-family living.
- Research
- A significant component to a successful remodel is the documentation and understanding of the existing structure. Efficiency is key when designing a remodel. We challenged ourselves to salvage as much as possible for upfront cost savings (framing and foundation). We took those savings and were able to allocate the funds to enrich aesthetic portions of the project (exterior siding material, high-end appliances, custom cabinetry, etc).
- Inspiration
- Making the transition back to sunny California, our design minded clients had visions of keeping doors and windows open year round. Modern, warm and uncluttered was their dream. Without adding a square foot, the existing house was transformed from a 'drive by, don't notice you', tired tract home, into a custom, 'that's a remodel'? modern home that fully encompassed the warmth of family life with the modern aesthetic the couple was looking for.
