About Crochet Floor Lamp
Crochet is a floor lamp inspired by knitting, one of the oldest decorative crafts. The metal structure resembles the interweaving of spokes during knitting, and the flexible light emitting diode cord recalls woolen threads. The matte cord forms a smooth oval, and its weight and bending behavior were studied so that the lamp looks balanced from every angle. The metal tubes are collapsible, and a cast metal element joins them at the center. Placed at the top of the lamp, the cord gives soft light for reading, work and rest.
Alexey Danilin's Crochet Floor Lamp exemplifies the contemporary design movement's embrace of organic forms within functional objects, merging the visual vocabulary of traditional craft with advanced LED technology to create a lighting fixture that operates simultaneously as sculptural installation and ambient illumination source. The work's title references the looping, continuous-line aesthetic of crochet needlework, translating textile craft's rhythmic repetition and flowing curves into the medium of light itself. The designer appears to engage with broader conversations in contemporary lighting design regarding the dematerialization of the fixture body, here achieved through the transformation of the light source from a contained element into the primary structural and aesthetic component. The brass tripod base, with its elegant splayed geometry, provides necessary grounding while maintaining visual lightness, its warm metallic finish creating chromatic dialogue with the golden-white illumination above. Technical accomplishment manifests in the seamless integration of LED technology within a continuously curved housing, maintaining consistent luminosity throughout the loop's variable orientations. The compositional choice to photograph the lamp against deeply textured velvet drapery suggests historical resonance with Dutch Golden Age still life traditions, where luxurious textiles provided sumptuous backdrops for precious objects, here updated to frame contemporary design achievement. Thematically, the work invites contemplation of light as both practical necessity and aesthetic experience, the transformation of electrical energy into visual poetry. One might consider how the continuous unbroken line of light suggests infinity, cyclical return, or the meditative quality of handcraft traditions. How does the translation of textile vocabulary into luminous form alter our understanding of both craft heritage and technological capability?

- Unique Properties
- In the process of artistic search, a unique shape of the lamp was found, which was combined with laconic engineering solutions, thanks to which the floor lamp was devoid of visual noise and retained a laconic silhouette. Due to its standard height and the location of the glowing cord at the top of the floor lamp, the lamp creates soft functional lighting. This lamp can be used for reading, work and leisure.

- Production Technology
- When developing this collection, special attention was paid to the shape of the glowing cord so that it would make an oval. For this purpose, the weight of the cord and how it bends was taken into account. The task was also to make it affordable. For this reason, metal pipes were made collapsible, and a special cast metal element was created in the middle. The LED cord was made matte to make it look better and to be tactilely pleasing.
- Design Challenge
- When developing the lamp, various ancient crafts were studied, since the idea of the project was to combine the ancient craft with current lighting technologies, and it so happened that when studying knitting, an association with an glowing cord arose. Thanks to this, the basis of the idea was born, which began to develop. And in the process of creating sketches, a new unique shape of the floor lamp appeared.
- Project Duration
- The project started in January 2023 in Moscow and finished in January 2024 in Moscow, and was exhibited in Interlight in September 2024.
- Operation Flow
- The light source in the floor lamp is a matte LED cord. Due to the fact that it is located at the top of the lamp, it can be used for accent lighting and for reading. It is created in the style of minimalism with a smooth oval shape of the cord. Therefore, it can be used in different interior styles. In terms of functionality, floor lamp can be used in different rooms: in the office, living room, bedroom and in public spaces.
- Research
- The main task of the study was to find a new relevant form of floor lamp and in this form convey the idea of a lamp, which is inspired by an ancient craft - knitting. For this, hundreds of hand sketches were created. After the shape was determined, it was necessary to carefully simulate the lamp from all sides, since the LED cord can bend, it was very important that it looked good from any angle.
- Inspiration
- In the collection, it was decided to combine cultural heritage, the search for the original form and functionality. The main artistic language is the association with ancient craft, namely knitting, is one of the most ancient types of decorative art. It takes its roots in the era of antiquity. The metal construction of the floor lamp resembles the interweaving of spokes during the knitting process, and the LED flexible cord resembles woolen threads.
