About Curved Chair

Curved is a chair made of natural Indonesian rattan. The design combines traditional rattan weaving craftsmanship with modern aesthetics. Smooth curved rattan lines recall the mountains and flowing water of traditional Chinese ink paintings. The form is shaped by hand through material selection, steaming, hot bending, shaping, polishing and painting. The armrest height, the leg stability and the curves of the seat and the backrest follow ergonomic study and support the waist and back. The chair measures 630 by 850 by 900 millimeters and suits indoor and outdoor settings.

Beijing Forestry University's Curved Chair exemplifies a remarkable synthesis of traditional craft knowledge and contemporary design innovation, positioning itself within the broader discourse of sustainable furniture practice and the ongoing renaissance of steam-bending techniques in twenty-first century design. The work emerges from rich traditions of bentwood construction that span multiple cultural geographies, from the pioneering innovations of nineteenth-century European furniture makers to the ancient bamboo-working traditions of East Asian craftspeople, yet it articulates a distinctly contemporary formal vocabulary through its dramatic looping structural members and refined proportional relationships. Technical accomplishment manifests throughout the composition, particularly in the continuous flow of the front leg and armrest assembly where material curves through seemingly impossible trajectories while maintaining structural integrity and visual elegance. The fan-shaped backrest demonstrates masterful control of parallel elements, each slat positioned with precision to create both comfortable support and rhythmic visual interest. Chromatically, the design celebrates material authenticity, allowing natural variations in wood tone to provide subtle warmth and visual texture without applied color or finish that might obscure the inherent beauty of the substrate. Thematically, the work engages with enduring questions of human comfort, material sustainability, and the relationship between functional necessity and aesthetic aspiration. One might observe references to natural forms throughout, the shell-like back, the organic curves suggesting growth patterns, the overall sense of a living structure frozen in elegant repose. The design invites contemplation of how contemporary makers might honor ancestral craft knowledge while pushing material possibilities toward new expressive territories, and viewers may find themselves considering the patience and skill required to coax rigid materials into such fluid forms.

Production Technology
This chair adopts premium Indonesian rattan that is waterproof, durable, and pliable with a soft luster and unique textures, achieving a refined style and rich visual effects. The superb techniques are used in material selection, steaming, hot bending, shaping, polishing, painting and other multiple manual processes, which equip each finished product with delicate details, a comfortable touch, and good load bearing performance, bringing visual and tactile enjoyment for a better user experience.
Design Challenge
The challenge was how to integrate the natural material, traditional craftsmanship, and modern aesthetics. To address that, the design team, breaking away from stereotyped designs in rattan furniture, has created a new rattan chair form by using minimalistic, dynamic curves to mimic the soft and graceful brushstrokes in Chinese landscape paintings. The product, while pursuing visual appeal, takes into account comfort and stability, striking a balance between aesthetics and functionality.
Project Duration
The project started in Beijing in January 2024 and completed in June 2024.
Operation Flow
The rattan chair prioritizes user experience and makes optimization based on ergonomics. It features fluid lines and is meticulously polished to offer a delicate, smooth touch. The height of the armrests, the stability of the legs, and the curvatures of the seat and the backrest have all undergone numerous tests. In this way, the chair can perfectly fit the human body and provide excellent support for the waist and back, while also boasting high stability, ensuring a comfortable experience.
Research
Rattan is pliable and expressive. Thus, rattan chairs can showcase natural flowing dynamism through the ingenious combination of rattan lines. This product marries traditional rattan weaving craftsmanship with modern design concepts, which utilizes the natural material to reproduce the ethereal mountains and water in Chinese ink paintings. As a result, it achieves a simple yet elegant aesthetic, able to harmonize with various indoor and outdoor environments.
Inspiration
The chair, inspired by high mountains and flowing water in traditional Chinese ink paintings, utilizes understated, pliable natural rattan to outline rolling mountains and flowing water through smooth curves, bringing to mind a lively, graceful, and magnificent scene of mountains and water intertwined. This not only creates a serene atmosphere for users to relax, but also embodies a perfect fusion of cultural inheritance and modern innovation.
