About Dusit Thani Laguna Golf Resort Hotel

Dusit Thani Laguna is a golf resort hotel in Singapore, located within the grounds of the Laguna National Golf and Country Club. The development joins a renovated three-storey clubhouse and a new six-storey hotel under one continuous roof. The curved roof is made of special cementitious fibre boards and a marine grade membrane, forming a seamless surface with no visible joints. A shared glazed facade opens wide views towards the golf course. The building form is inspired by the undulating green landscape of the course. The project was completed in December 2020.

Mercurio Design Lab S.r.l.'s Dusit Thani Laguna Golf Resort Hotel emerges as a compelling meditation on the dialogue between architectural innovation and natural landscape, embodying principles that have animated contemporary hospitality design since the late twentieth century's turn toward organic expressionism. The structure's sweeping parabolic concrete ribs suggest affinities with the biomorphic investigations of architects who sought to dissolve boundaries between built form and living systems, creating what might be understood as an inhabited landscape rather than a building imposed upon terrain. The integration of planted terraces within the curved concrete shells extends this philosophy, transforming structural elements into vertical gardens that blur distinctions between architecture and horticulture. Compositional achievement manifests in the masterful orchestration of scale relationships: the monumental arched framework establishes dramatic presence while the layered vegetation mediates between human scale and architectural ambition. The chromatic strategy demonstrates sophisticated understanding of tropical light conditions, with the pale concrete surfaces calibrated to appear luminous rather than harsh under intense equatorial sun, while the reflective glazing captures and redistributes atmospheric color throughout the day. Technical accomplishment reveals itself in the seamless integration of complex curved geometry with practical hospitality requirements, suggesting advanced computational design methodologies translated into built reality. The work invites contemplation of architecture's capacity to create synthetic ecologies, environments where technological sophistication serves rather than supplants natural systems, and where the experience of luxury emerges through immersion in carefully choreographed relationships between sky, structure, and verdant ground.

Production Technology
The roof which is made of special cementitious fiber boards and a marine grade mebrane, displays a uniform seamless surface with no visible joints. An optimal visual effect is achieved both from afar and from a closer look, following the original design.

The over-arching roof and shared, glazed facade, give the premise a spacious appearance and let the occupants enjoy a spectacular landscape view.
Design Challenge
The two functions of the building, combining a hotel and clubhouse, make it a complex proposition. The idea for a single, unified, and seamless roof seems quite challenging due to the discrepancy in height and awkward marriage of the two buildings with largely different functions. MDL did extensive research to find the technology to effectuate the plan. The result is a dynamic and unified building that in a powerful movement merges almost seamlessly with the surging landscape of the golf course.
Project Duration
Dusit Thani Laguna is located in Singapore and was completed in December 2020.
Operation Flow
The hotel, with rooms from the first to the sixth-storeys, includes a group of penthouses with private terraces. There are also eight corporate booths, each with their own elevated pool, facing directly the golf course. Here, functions can be hosted especially during golf tournaments. The golf club functions are located on the first-storey, on a mezzanine level, and on the second-storey. The clubhouse, also known as the 19th hole, is where golfers relax after a round of golf.
Research
Dusit Thani Laguna is located within the grounds of the Laguna National Golf and Country Club, a renowned golf destination that hosts international tournaments and major championships. The union of a Dusit Thani hotel and multimillion clubhouse, introduces a new set of social and recreational privileges for both members golfers and hotel patrons. The resort caters to guests looking for the perfect golfing experience as well as those simply seeking to witness and enjoy its beautiful landscape.
Inspiration
The architectural design for the hotel and clubhouse is inspired by the green undulating landscape of the golf course. The sleek, curvilinear form presents itself with a distinctive aesthetic character from whatever angle it is viewed. It takes a life of its own encompassing the club and hotel functions under one swooping roof with a dominant and exciting sculptural form which complements the gorgeous natural landscape that the golf course of Dusit Thani Laguna provides.
