About Fenc Thermobionic Bionic Knitting Fabrics

Fenc Thermobionic is a knitted fabric collection designed for activewear and everyday clothing. The fabric is made from biobased polyester produced from waste wood, offering an alternative to yarns derived from fossil sources. Bionic knitting technology balances warmth and breathability, using eight-channel yarn for moisture wicking, micro vents for airflow and thermal pockets for insulation. The adaptive structure follows the way hummingbirds regulate heat. Computer jacquard patterning creates shifting blue and green colors that recall wingbeats.

This distinguished example of contemporary textile innovation, Fenc Thermobionic Bionic Knitting Fabrics by Far Eastern New Century Corporation, represents a significant achievement in the synthesis of biomimetic design principles with advanced material engineering. The work emerges from a tradition of textile experimentation that seeks to translate natural systems and biological efficiency into functional wearable forms, participating in broader contemporary movements toward sustainable and intelligent fabric development. The garment demonstrates remarkable technical accomplishment through its complex knitted construction, which achieves both thermal functionality and visual sophistication through the integration of varied knit structures within a single continuous fabric. The organic patterning, suggesting cellular matrices or fluid dynamics, reflects contemporary design approaches that draw inspiration from microscopic natural phenomena, translating scientific observation into aesthetic expression. The chromatic choices move through a carefully orchestrated progression of cool blues and greens that evoke aquatic environments while maintaining visual cohesion across the three-dimensional form. Particularly noteworthy is the treatment of the gathered waist section, where the elasticized construction creates both functional body-conforming properties and a compelling visual rhythm that contrasts with the flowing volumes above and below. The presentation approach, featuring the garment against a minimal background and worn by a figure whose gesture invites contemplation of the material qualities, follows established conventions of fashion documentation while emphasizing the textile itself as the primary subject of interest. This work invites consideration of how contemporary design practices might continue to evolve at the intersection of technological innovation and aesthetic sensitivity, asking viewers to contemplate the future possibilities of fabrics that respond to both environmental and human needs.

Production Technology
Bionic Knitting Technology regulates heat across all conditions, balancing warmth, breathability, and precise heat control. Cooling is enhanced by 8-channel yarn for quick moisture wicking and micro-vents for airflow. Warming utilizes thermal pockets for insulation, air channels for cooling, and lofted fleece to trap or release heat as needed. By transforming waste wood into sustainable polyester fabric
Design Challenge
The main challenge was integrating biomimicry with sustainable production. Replicating the thermoregulation of hummingbirds required advanced software and machine precision, making creativity come true. Producing 100% wood-derived polyester also required supply chain collaboration to ensure quality and scalability. By overcoming production limitations, we balanced ecological responsibility with innovation.
Project Duration
The project started in Taiwan in 2024 and finished in 2025. It is set to be globally showcased starting in 2025
Operation Flow
Perfect for activewear and everyday wear, this smart fabric blends sustainability with performance. It offers adaptive comfort and breathability, keeping users cool, dry, and stylish. It utilizes advanced computer jacquard technology to play with colors and integrate knit structures, taking knitting to the next level with precision pattern design.
Research
Focuses on converting waste wood into bio-based chemicals, producing bio-polyester and bio-yarn for sustainable textiles. Bio-knitting technology regulates heat by adjusting yarn and structure, ensuring comfort in various conditions. Advanced computer jacquard technology creates color-shift effects and precise patterns and structures, transforming design concepts into functional fabrics.
Inspiration
Inspired by the rapid wingbeats and iridescent structural colors of hummingbirds, the design captures the fluid motion of air and shimmering hues, resulting in a dynamic and visually striking fabric. Functionally, mimicking how hummingbirds regulate heat during stop-start activities, the fabric provides optimized thermal regulation, balancing warmth and breathability as it transitions from activity to rest.
