About Fog Architecture Photography
This series captures vast architectural pieces in surreal, foggy landscapes, blurring the line between reality and dreams. The landscape images were captured in California, USA, using an iPhone 14, while the architectural elements were photographed across various locations across Europe. Each architectural piece was shot independently from the landscapes. Achieving the correct perspective in both sets of images was necessary and a significant challenge to ensure seamless compositions.
Positioned at the intersection of architectural documentation and landscape photography, Simone Hutsch's FOG Architecture Photography series engages with traditions of typological building study while introducing elements of chromatic transformation that elevate the work beyond straightforward representation. The structure depicted appears to draw from late modernist industrial or commercial architecture, its corrugated facade suggesting warehouse, storage, or utilitarian programming reconsidered through an aesthetic lens that finds sculptural beauty in repetitive functional elements. The photographer's decision to present the landscape in shifted chromatic values, where natural vegetation assumes lavender and mauve tonalities more commonly associated with infrared capture or deliberate color processing, establishes an immediate tension between the documentary impulse and poetic intervention. This approach resonates with the contemplative architectural photography of artists who isolate buildings within carefully controlled environmental contexts, stripping away contextual noise to reveal essential formal relationships between structure and setting. The work demonstrates sophisticated understanding of tonal relationships, balancing the neutral gray architecture against the warm-shifted landscape to create chromatic tension without dissonance. The undulating roofline introduces organic movement into an otherwise rigorously geometric composition, suggesting perhaps that the building breathes or responds to atmospheric forces. The reflective water element in the foreground functions both as compositional anchor and metaphorical device, doubling the image and introducing questions about reality and reflection, presence and image. The distant mountains establish scale while reinforcing the sense of isolation that pervades the work. Viewers might consider how architecture transforms our experience of landscape, and conversely how context shapes our reading of built form, inviting meditation on the permeable boundaries between natural and constructed environments.

- Production Technology
- iPhone 14 for landscape photography, Sony Alpah 7rll for architecture shots, Adobe Photoshop for compsoing
- Design Challenge
- The most challenging part of my work is always the perspective. Angles, pattern, and lines change when one changes the point of view, a good and interesting angle let every building look striking. Finding the right perspective in my existing architecture shot for my new landscape shot was quite challenging, as well as combining them seamlessly.
- Project Duration
- I've shot the architecture objects bewteen 2018 and 2024, the landscape shots are all taken in April 2024 and I composed them in August 2024.
- Operation Flow
- The images can be used for a physical exhibition or in any digital format.
- Research
- I'm always looking for ways to improve my work/skills. I have a passion for surreal landscapes in a pastel colour scheme. With this series I finally combined my passion for architecture photography with some outstanding Californian landscape shots. I've used the photo editing program Photoshop.
- Inspiration
- I’m a passionate graphic designer and self-taught architecture photographer. Exploring geometry in architecture is really exciting to me. My work combines art and photography and lets people dive into a different world. I give the buildings a surreal touch in my retouching process.
