About Green-Backed Tit Nesting Plan Art Installation and Pavilion

Green-Backed Tit Nesting Plan is an art installation and pavilion with an integrated lighting design at Sun Moon Lake. The nest-like structure invites visitors to step inside and rest. The lighting design begins with human vision rather than illuminating the installation itself. Attention is placed on balancing the illumination between the surrounding environment and the visitors. Lighting fixtures with suitable light distribution and cut-off angles are integrated into the wooden structure to create a glare-free ambiance that sustains the tranquility of the lake.

Situated within the fertile intersection of environmental art, vernacular craft traditions, and contemporary lighting design, this remarkable pavilion by YI-CHANG CHEN articulates a profound meditation on shelter, sanctuary, and the relationship between human creativity and natural forms. The work appears to draw upon deep cultural associations with the nest as universal symbol of protection, nurture, and home, translating these archetypal resonances into an inhabitable sculptural experience that invites contemplation at the threshold between constructed and natural environments. The technical achievement demonstrates masterful understanding of wood as both structural and expressive material, with the radiating fin elements showcasing the grain patterns and warm coloration that distinguish thoughtfully selected timber while the integrated illumination transforms these surfaces into luminous vertical planes that glow with inviting warmth against the cooling evening sky. The compositional sophistication reveals itself in the dynamic balance between the vertical aspiration of the pointed fins and the horizontal grounding of the entrance platform, while the internal woven lattice creates visual complexity that rewards extended observation. The designer seems to engage with phenomenological traditions in architecture, creating a space where light becomes material and where the experience of crossing the threshold promises transformation from the exposed promenade into an embracing interior sanctuary. The ovoid form visible within the structure functions as both practical lighting element and symbolic presence, suggesting simultaneously an egg awaiting hatching, a bird in protective enclosure, and a lantern offering guidance. The waterfront siting enhances the contemplative qualities, with the calm waters and distant landscape establishing a meditative environmental context. What does it mean to create a space that embodies both monumentality and intimacy, that transforms the fundamental human desire for shelter into an aesthetic experience of wonder?

Inspiration
The Nesting Plan mimics Green-backed Tit’s nest-building style from nature’s animal master architects. At Sun Moon Lake, artist Cheng Tsung FENG studied it constructed their nests and reproduced their nesting process and method. FENG then interpreted this delicate techniquetoconstruct a resting nest using human woodworking skills which welcomes travelers ashore at Ita Thau Pier, Stunning lakes and imposing mountains echoing off each other makes Sun Moon Lake a place well worth visiting.
