About Haikou West Coast Southern Park Visitor Center

Haikou West Coast Southern Park Visitor Center is a visitor center in Haikou, Hainan Province, China. The building has an elliptical form inspired by an oval pebble washed by the sea. The shape follows the streamlined landscape of the park and blends into the surrounding scenery. A continuous roof of white composite aluminium sheet links the indoor and outdoor areas and offers space for rest. The facade uses tempered hollow glass curtain walls with undulating perforated aluminium sunshades. The sunshades reduce direct sunlight and save energy.

Haikou West Coast Southern Park Visitor Center by Yun Lu represents a significant contribution to contemporary architectural discourse concerning the relationship between built form and natural landscape, exemplifying the parametric design methodologies that have transformed architectural possibility in the twenty-first century. The structure's remarkable spiral geometry, which coils gracefully across its site like a ribbon caught mid-unfurl, demonstrates sophisticated engagement with topological design principles while creating functional spaces that flow seamlessly from exterior to interior realms. The architect appears to have drawn inspiration from organic growth patterns, the logarithmic spirals found in shells and plant forms, translating these mathematical relationships into inhabitable space through advanced computational design and fabrication techniques. The pristine white cladding, which maintains consistent luminosity across the building's sweeping surfaces, establishes the structure as a beacon within its lush tropical setting while the horizontal banding of the layered roof creates visual rhythm that guides the eye around the form's continuous perimeter. Particularly noteworthy is the central void or oculus that opens the building's heart to the sky, creating an intimate courtyard garden visible from surrounding programmatic spaces and establishing dialogue between architecture and atmosphere. The work's integration with its landscape context, achieved through careful site planning that preserves significant vegetation while establishing clear circulation patterns, suggests an ecological consciousness that extends beyond formal innovation. The dramatic atmospheric conditions captured in this view, with gathering clouds providing theatrical backdrop, emphasize the structure's sculptural presence while inviting contemplation of architecture's capacity to create meaningful gathering places. What might the experience of approaching this threshold, of crossing from tropical garden into the embrace of its curving interior spaces, reveal about the possibilities of architectural welcome?

Production Technology
The continuous roof with white composite aluminium sheet also unifies the indoor and outdoor space, and provides a place for people to have a rest and entertainment. The surrounding building facade adopts tempered hollow glass curtain wall, which makes the space more open and freer. The glass curtain wall of the facade is equipped with perforated aluminum sunshade, which is undulating, echoing the seaside culture, making the facade look more flexible, reducing the direct sunlight at the same time to achieve the purpose of energy saving.
Project Duration
The project site is in Haikou, Hainan Province, China. Now the design is completed and estimated date of completion in June,2020.
Operation Flow
In terms of spatial layout, the building is elliptical, perfectly integrated with the streamline landscape of the site. The inner courtyard leaning to one side forms an obvious contrast relationship between the real and the virtual. As a transitional space for tourists to enter the interior, it is shared internally and externally.
Inspiration
In this project, MUDA-Architects designed the tourist center is like an oval pebble washed by the sea. It is inlaid at the entrance of the park and integrates with the surrounding landscape environment. It becomes a part of the natural landscape and creates a good visual experience and ecological building environment.
