About Handan Zarsion Living Center
Handan Zarsion is a living center built on the site of a former oxygen generator factory in Handan, China. The chamfered corners of the building form an urban square that remains open to the street. Residents use the square to chat, play chess, take a walk and walk dogs. A long strip layout follows the narrow shape of the corner site. On the second floor, 18 metal shuttle-shaped louvers are set at regular intervals, each rotated by ten degrees. Sunlight on the louvers creates changing patterns of light and shadow across the facade.

- Unique Properties
- The project was designed to form an urban square by chamfered corners to maintain the greatest interaction and openness. The square formed by chamfered corners of the building is not only a display platform in harmony with the city, but also a natural convergence point of vitality.
Considering that this is a long and narrow urban corner land, the "一"-shaped layout can perfectly fit its overall boundary attribute. A brand new super-scale interface strongly stimulates the vitality of the city. - Dimensions & Packaging
- The black and white moire pattern is formed by the misaligned array. When there is sunlight, the effect of light and shadow makes the two-dimensional building facade present a three-dimensional dynamic of industrial aesthetics and a geometric illusion rather than a static approach, thus giving this undulating long interface a strong sense of future and fantasy.

- Production Technology
- On the second floor of the building, 18 metal shuttle-shaped louvers are embedded in the 8,400 width like rhythmic keys. Each louver rotates 10 degrees and is installed at a distance of 450 intervals, which gives full consideration to the actual functions and transparency of vision.
- Design Challenge
- The arched space formed inadvertently between two mushroom-shaped columns creates a kind of spatio-temporal dialogue, which actually beautifies the structural intention of the cow-leg pillars and arch trusses in the old workshop. The anti-gravity and sense of history of the mushroom columns interweave in the background of the interlayer arc light strips, presenting some kind of contradiction and uncertainty.
- Project Duration
- The project started in Dec. 2019 in Handan City, Hebei Province, China and was completed in March 2020.
- Operation Flow
- By chamfered corners, architects formed an urban square to maintain the greatest interaction and openness between the living center and the city, making it a good place for residents to chat, play chess, take a walk and walk dogs. This vivid pocket square injects a kind of new energy into the city.
- Research
- Along with the development and urbanization of China continues, the project is part of the updates in the city. Time flies, decades of years have passed, and industries are constantly improving and updating. In the past 30 years with the new production methods and forces coming up, those factories and affiliates built by old production force need to be updated constantly, adapting to all the functions required by the new productive relations.
- Inspiration
- The project locates in the once glorious Handan Oxygenerator Factory. Founded in 1946, it has rapidly become a forgotten urban ruin due to the recent change of industry. The land, which bears the memory of generations, has undergone fractured changes in an instant.
The original intention of the design is to realize urban renewal in an industrial heritage of low industrial aesthetic value, and to give new life to this large area of forgotten cold ruins and bring hope and joy to the city. - Image Credits
