About Hidden Boxes Residential House

The Hidden Boxes project responds to the ongoing dominance of monotonous spatial structures in contemporary architecture, despite historical concepts like Raumplan, Domino, and Universal Plan. It seeks to deconstruct these configurations to create a new synthesis, addressing both internal architectural concerns as spatial organization, the Mass/Void relationship, and surface interactions and external factors, including climate, privacy, and cultural needs.

Yahya Kashi's Hidden Boxes Residential House engages contemporary architectural discourse surrounding urban densification, modular construction systems, and the expressive potential of repetitive geometric elements within constrained metropolitan contexts, the work participates in a lineage of modernist and contemporary residential design that seeks to reconcile programmatic complexity with formal clarity, echoing principles established by mid-century masters who championed elemental volumetric composition while extending those traditions through contemporary material applications and fabrication techniques, the building's primary achievement resides in its sophisticated manipulation of surface and depth, employing a seemingly uniform cladding system that is systematically perforated to create a layered reading of facade as both protective skin and permeable membrane, this dialectical relationship between enclosure and openness, between the monolithic and the porous, demonstrates compositional intelligence and a nuanced understanding of facade as interface rather than mere barrier, the modular tile system suggests economies of construction while simultaneously creating a refined visual texture that rewards sustained observation, the tiles' small scale and regular grid establish a baseline uniformity against which the varied fenestration patterns register as deliberate compositional gestures rather than arbitrary punctures, technically the work exhibits accomplished control of proportion and rhythm, the window groupings distributed according to a logic that appears simultaneously systematic and varied, avoiding both mechanical predictability and arbitrary randomness, the vertical and horizontal clusters create visual interest while maintaining overall coherence, suggesting interior spatial organization without literal revelation, the cantilevered volumes demonstrate structural confidence and spatial ambition, these projecting masses creating dynamic shadow lines during daylight hours while at twilight establishing themselves as volumetric presences through their geometry alone, the building's material palette proves notably restrained, the cool gray tile field providing a neutral ground that allows the warm interior illumination to function as chromatic accent and focal activation, this restraint speaks to a design philosophy privileging spatial and formal articulation over decorative elaboration, the structure's insertion into an existing urban fabric visible in the surrounding context reveals sensitivity to scale relationships, the building neither deferring entirely to its neighbors nor dominating them, achieving a balance between contextual responsiveness and assertive individuality, the twilight capture proves particularly effective in revealing the building's essential character, at this liminal hour the structure exists simultaneously as solid form and as light vessel, the illuminated apertures transforming abstract geometric void into warm suggestion of inhabited space within, this moment of day-to-evening transition invites contemplation of architecture's role as framework for daily life, as container for human activity, as mediator between individual privacy and collective urban existence, what questions might this building pose about contemporary domestic life within dense urban settings, how does the interplay of opacity and transparency, of protective enclosure and generous opening, reflect evolving conceptions of home as both sanctuary and social node, in what ways does the geometric clarity and material restraint suggest values of honesty, efficiency, and formal discipline within architectural expression, how might the systematic yet varied facade treatment serve as metaphor for individuality within structure, for personal expression within social frameworks, the work invites viewers to consider architecture not merely as static object but as active participant in urban life, as frame for light and shadow, as stage for the daily rituals of dwelling, as tangible manifestation of spatial ideas translated into constructed reality.

Unique Properties
The Hidden Boxes project in Hamedan redefines residential space by deconstructing monotonous spatial structures. In pursuit of this, we sought to break down the monotony by placing independent spatial boxes together to form a cohesive whole, balancing internal elements like Mass/Void relationships with external factors such as climate, privacy, and cultural needs. In the end, we tried to redefine a residential space in the context of structural binary oppositions between the internal and external issues of architecture with a view to the history we have gone through.

Production Technology
The project features a prestressed structure with a column system, chosen to accommodate cantilevered slabs and optimize structural efficiency. The facade was designed to create a transparent yet solid boundary between interior and exterior spaces. Utilizing Fakhr o Madin bricks, connected with bolts and anchored to the main structure, ensures privacy, light control, and spatial coverage while addressing contextual considerations.
Design Challenge
The Hidden Boxes project in Hamedan addresses the challenges of contemporary Iranian architecture, which is dominated by monotonous spatial structures. The project aims to break these structures, focusing on internal architectural elements like the Mass/Void relationship, and external factors such as climate, privacy, and cultural needs. Historical architectural references and native residential types were considered, while issues such as sunlight control and privacy were key factors in the design process.
Project Duration
Hidden Boxes started in 2019 and finished in 2021 in Hamedan, Iran.
Operation Flow
The surrounding urban fabric primarily consists of residential buildings. Due to rapid and unregulated urban development, the area is transitioning from a low-density, villa-dominated neighborhood to one characterized by high-rise apartment buildings with maximum height density. Consequently, the project is positioned at the intersection of these two typologies, engaging in a dialogue between low-rise single-family houses and high-density apartment structures. This hybrid villa-apartment typology responds to and interacts with its contextual surroundings.
Research
The project advanced its research through multiple layers. The historical and architectural discipline layer explored concepts such as the Raumplan, Domino, and Universal Plan. Meanwhile, the formal and spatial analysis layer examined the vernacular houses of Hamedan, aiming to reinterpret and represent aspects of their spatial organization within the project.
Inspiration
"Hidden Boxes" reflects architectural history, responding to the persistence of monotonous spatial structures despite concepts like Raumplan, Domino, and Universal Plan. This project explores deconstructing conventional configurations to form a new synthesis, addressing both internal factors-spatial organization, Mass/Void dynamics, surface relationships, and fragmentation and external concerns such as climate, privacy, and cultural needs.
