About Hilltop Homestead Single Family House

Hilltop Homestead presents a house arranged as two barn inspired volumes linked by a glazed passage that forms a courtyard between them. The plan organizes the home into zones for living, leisure and rest. A double height living area opens toward the garden and connects with outdoor spaces. Additional areas include a spa with pool and rooms for recreation. Parts of the house may adapt to changing needs over time. The layout maintains a clear relation between the building, daily activities and the surrounding landscape, while guiding movement along the courtyard axis.

Katarzyna Starzyk's Hilltop Homestead Single Family House emerges from contemporary residential design traditions that honor both refined modernist clarity and the enduring warmth of agrarian building vernaculars, demonstrating how meticulous attention to proportion, material selection, and spatial sequence can produce architecture of quiet confidence and lived comfort rather than stylistic ostentation, situating itself within the broader discourse of northern climate residential design where thermal performance, natural light management, and the psychological necessities of enclosure against challenging weather must harmonize with desires for transparency, environmental connection, and spatial generosity; the compositional achievement here centers on the skillful orchestration of geometric clarity and material richness, where the bold gabled primary volume with its dramatically scaled glazed facade establishes immediate architectural presence while the restrained palette of natural timber, matte blacks, and crisp whites prevents visual cacophony, each material system reading distinctly yet contributing to overall coherence through careful proportion and thoughtful junction detailing, with the vertical timber cladding providing rhythmic texture that catches and modulates light across the day while the transparent openings reveal layered interior spaces with exposed structure and considered furnishing that extend the architectural language inward, suggesting inhabitants who value both aesthetic intention and everyday practicality; technically, the design demonstrates sophisticated understanding of residential-scale tectonic assembly, where the pitched roof form addresses vernacular climatic wisdom regarding snow load and water shedding while its crisp geometric rendering through contemporary fenestration systems and material junctions transforms traditional typology into distinctly present-day expression, the black window frames providing structural legibility and visual grounding against the lighter timber and white surfaces, the offset volumes creating sheltered outdoor zones and interesting interior spatial variety, and the integration of landscape elements through geometric planters and naturalistic grasses mediating between architectural precision and organic surroundings in a manner that neither colonizes nature nor rejects cultivation; thematically, this work invites contemplation of how residential architecture might balance openness with enclosure, transparency with privacy, refinement with approachability, engaging the perennial question of what constitutes home in contemporary life, how spaces for daily living can nurture both solitary contemplation and communal gathering, how buildings might sit gracefully within landscape rather than imposing upon it, and how material choices convey values about craft, sustainability, durability, and sensory pleasure, the timber suggesting warmth and renewability, the generous glazing suggesting trust and connection to surroundings, the geometric discipline suggesting order and intention, together proposing that thoughtfully designed domestic space contributes meaningfully to human flourishing; the design seems to reference the material honesty and spatial clarity of Scandinavian architects who have long understood how to create warm minimalism appropriate to northern latitudes, echoing perhaps the refined rusticity of Norwegian and Swedish contemporary residential work where traditional building wisdom merges with modernist spatial principles, while the prominent gable form and timber materiality suggest kinship with agricultural building types reinterpreted for residential inhabitation, and the careful integration of outdoor living spaces through deck platforms and transparent thresholds reflects broader contemporary interest in extending domestic territory beyond the building envelope to embrace seasonal outdoor occupation; how might such architecture shape the daily experience of its inhabitants, what rituals of habitation does it invite or enable, how do these material and spatial choices contribute to a sense of dwelling that transcends mere shelter to offer genuine sanctuary, connection, and the particular pleasure of moving through space that has been shaped with care, intention, and respect for human needs both practical and poetic?

Unique Properties
The project consists of two barn style volumes connected by a glazed link, forming a private internal courtyard at the heart of the homestead. The 510 square meter layout includes an 8 meter high living area, a children’s wing with a recreational attic, a private parents’ attic suite, a spa zone, a courtyard pool and an extensive garage system. One volume is designed for future adaptation into a fully independent 90 square meter apartment, ensuring long term flexibility.
Dimensions & Packaging
The homestead provides a total floor area of 487.01 square meters and a footprint of 555.53 square meters, situated on a spacious plot of 10 517 square meters. It is composed of two barn-style volumes linked by a glazed connector, featuring an inner courtyard with a swimming pool, a spa zone, a double garage and a freestanding three-car garage. The layout also allows one building to be transformed into a fully independent 90 square meter apartment, ensuring long-term adaptability.

Production Technology
The design was developed through a functional division into two modern barn style buildings connected by a glazed link. The concept emphasizes spacious interiors, large glazing, covered terraces and a protected courtyard with a pool and spa zone. The planning strategy allows future conversion of one volume into a standalone 90 square meter apartment. The project focuses on spatial clarity, flexibility and coherent organization of external and internal areas.
Design Challenge
The main challenge was to fit a 510 square meter program into a clear layout that follows the natural elevation of the site. Dividing the design into two volumes linked by glazing enabled efficient functional planning and a homestead character. Ensuring future adaptability led to the option of creating a 90 square meter independent apartment while maintaining coherent outdoor spaces and a strong visual axis.
Project Duration
Design work was completed in 2024, while the construction of the house began in 2025. The project is located in Radwankow Krolewski, Poland, on a spacious plot positioned on a natural elevation, which strongly influenced the arrangement of the homestead and the organization of its functional zones.
Operation Flow
Circulation is organized along a visual axis leading to a tree integrated into the terrace roof, establishing spatial hierarchy. A glazed connector links the two volumes while maintaining their independence. Outdoor areas including the terrace, courtyard, pool and spa extend the living space and form a continuous sequence of functions. Clear zoning separates parents areas and children areas, while a covered passage enables sheltered movement between the garages and the house.
Research
The project explores how modern barn architecture can organize the living space of a large family on a spacious, elevated rural plot. The design examines functional zoning, the use of separate volumes connected transparently, and the creation of a private courtyard as the organizing element of the homestead. The flexibility to convert one building into an independent apartment further supports long term usability. The research focuses on achieving clarity, comfort, and adaptability while maintaining the typology of a contemporary countryside residence.
Inspiration
The design was inspired by the ambition to create a contemporary homestead for a family with three children on a large, elevated plot in Radwankow Krolewski. The site’s spacious, natural setting led to the concept of two modern barn style buildings forming a functional and harmonious whole. The aim was to reinterpret the rural atmosphere through clear zoning, generous spaces and a strong relationship with the surrounding landscape.
