About In Scene Brand Experience
In Scene is a brand renewal programme for a coffee brand based in Shanghai. The design uses theatre as a metaphor and places the consumer inside the scene. The gift box has a three-fold paper sculpture structure that opens like stage curtains and measures about 300 by 200 by 80 millimetres. Eco-friendly paper and metal fittings are used. A scanned code links the box to a short personality test that creates a card for sharing. Stores add light, scent and sound to extend the coffee experience.
Ziyang Wang's In Scene Brand Experience emerges from contemporary experiential marketing discourse where brand identity transcends static visual systems to inhabit physical space and tangible materiality, creating multisensory encounters that position products within lifestyle narratives and cultural participation frameworks rather than mere transactional exchange, this approach reflecting broader shifts in commercial communication toward immersive storytelling and branded environments that invite sustained engagement rather than fleeting impression. The compositional achievement demonstrates sophisticated understanding of visual hierarchy and spatial orchestration, arranging diverse product formats into coherent ensemble where each element maintains distinct identity while contributing to unified brand language, the diagonal organization creating dynamic visual flow that guides attention through multiple points of interest without overwhelming or confusing, the generous negative space allowing breathing room that communicates confidence and restraint rather than anxious overcrowding, this balance between abundance and restraint suggesting brand philosophy valuing quality over quantity, curation over saturation. The chromatic sophistication deserves particular attention, the powder blue establishing serene sophistication while remaining accessible rather than austere, the warm umber tones grounding the palette in organic materiality and preventing coldness, the cream whites providing luminous breathing space and suggesting purity or clarity, this triadic harmony demonstrating color theory fluency while avoiding predictable complementary contrast, the restrained palette unifying diverse product types into family system while allowing variation through proportion and placement of chromatic elements across different formats. The central hinged display box represents notable formal innovation, transforming product packaging into theatrical stage where miniature domestic scene unfolds, this box-within-frame device creating narrative depth and inviting contemplative engagement beyond superficial consumption, the interior tableau suggesting lifestyle aspirations, domestic comfort, cultural sophistication, and personal sanctuary, the architectural elements and furnishings rendered with attention to detail that rewards close inspection, this dimensional complexity elevating packaging from protective container to experiential artifact and potential keepsake worthy of display beyond initial product consumption. The photographic treatment elevates commercial documentation into artistic still life territory, the theatrical lighting transforming mundane product array into studied composition worthy of sustained contemplation, the dramatic shadows adding sculptural dimension and temporal specificity, the graduated background creating focused intensity, the technical mastery evident in exposure control ensuring detail preservation across bright and shadow zones, color accuracy maintaining chromatic intention, and post-production refinement achieving polish without sterility, this craft demonstrating respect for subject matter and audience intelligence. The work invites consideration of how contemporary brands construct identity through comprehensive visual language spanning graphic design, industrial design, packaging architecture, spatial experience, and photographic representation, each element reinforcing core values and aesthetic proposition, and how such systems negotiate between commercial imperatives and artistic ambition, creating objects and images that function pragmatically while aspiring to cultural resonance beyond marketplace transaction, one might contemplate how the careful curation and presentation visible here reflects broader cultural conversations about consumption, aesthetics, lifestyle construction, and the role design plays in mediating between material goods and personal identity formation.

- Design Challenge
- The core challenge was balancing the brand’s deep historical assets with emotional engagement of contemporary young consumers. Solutions included creating a dramatic narrative framework that turns history into an interactive modern script, designing a role-playing mechanism for users to become active protagonists, and integrating online and offline touchpoints to ensure narrative continuity and immersive experience. This overcame the typical challenge of heritage brands lacking experiential and emotional resonance while considering social context, information availability, and technological feasibility.
- Project Duration
- The project concept was initiated in 2025, with conceptually planned implementation in Shanghai from March to May 2026.
- Operation Flow
- Users initiate a ritualized experience through the "My Scene in Shanghai" gift box, scanning a QR code to participate in the "Haipai Coffee Moments" personality test, generating personalized cards to share on social media. Offline, participants can visit immersive stores for light-and-shadow check-ins, read the Shanghai Coffee News mini-paper, and engage in pop-up activities, forming a closed-loop experience of unboxing, testing, checking in, sharing, and repurchasing.
