About Inside Out Toy Furniture

Inside Out is a set of children's furniture that can also be used as a toy. The set combines a white box and a light green three-legged stool. The box can serve as a small table for a child or as a seat, so a parent and a child can sit together. The stool can be inserted into the box from all four sides, like a puzzle. No single use is fixed, which invites free experiment and imagination. White ash wood was used, coated with car paint and sanded smooth, and all corners are rounded for safe handling.

Nao Fujimura's Inside Out Toy Furniture emerges from a rich tradition of multifunctional children's furniture design that seeks to honor both the spatial realities of contemporary domestic environments and the developmental needs of young users through intelligent form-making that refuses to choose between aesthetic refinement and practical utility. The work participates in a long lineage of modular furniture systems extending from early modernist experiments with knock-down construction and space-saving solutions through mid-century innovations in children's environments by designers who understood furniture as pedagogical tool, and into contemporary explorations of compact living necessitated by urban housing conditions and heightened awareness of material consumption. The compositional achievement demonstrates sophisticated understanding of geometric relationships, establishing a primary cubic volume whose substantial presence anchors the visual field while providing functional storage capacity, this cream-toned container articulated by precisely calculated apertures that serve triple function as joinery slots, visual rhythm elements, and formal revelation devices, the negative spaces creating syncopated pattern across the cube's faces that activates surfaces while enabling the brilliant green stool to nest partially within and emerge partially without, establishing spatial ambiguity between inside and outside, stored and displayed, hidden and revealed. The chromatic palette evidences notable restraint and intelligence, deploying a warm neutral ground that reads as sophisticated rather than stark, avoiding the coldness of pure white while maintaining sufficient lightness to recede spatially and provide optimal contrast for the vibrant lime-green stool whose hue seems calibrated for maximum visual impact and psychological resonance, this particular green suggesting natural growth, renewal, and spring vitality while achieving enough saturation to energize the composition without overwhelming, the color relationship between cream and green demonstrating an understanding of how temperature contrast, value differential, and saturation opposition can create visual hierarchy and spatial depth while maintaining overall harmony. Technical execution appears exemplary across multiple dimensions, the furniture surfaces exhibiting flawless matte finish that speaks to careful material selection and manufacturing precision, edges meeting crisply at perfect right angles, cylindrical stool legs maintaining uniform diameter and consistent spacing, the circular seat describing a true geometric circle, every aspect suggesting meticulous attention to detail appropriate to children's products where safety, durability, and longevity must coexist with visual appeal. The slot-based joinery system visible through the cube's apertures represents particularly elegant problem-solving, enabling tool-free assembly and disassembly while creating structural integrity through interference fit and weight distribution, the elongated rectangular slots corresponding precisely to the stool's leg dimensions, allowing insertion and withdrawal while maintaining stability during use, this visible mechanical logic functioning as both practical necessity and aesthetic statement, making the furniture's operational principle legible and therefore more engaging for young users who benefit from understanding how things work. The inclusion of adult hands within the photographic composition serves essential communicative function, establishing scale relationship between furniture and human body, demonstrating interaction method and ease of manipulation, and providing warm organic counterpoint to the geometric precision of the designed objects, the hands positioned to suggest gentle extraction or insertion motion without obscuring critical formal relationships, their natural flesh tones introducing chromatic warmth that bridges between neutral cube and saturated green stool. The work invites consideration of how children's furniture might transcend purely utilitarian function to become objects of aesthetic contemplation and spatial play, how storage solutions might engage imagination while organizing physical environments, and how design for young users need not compromise sophistication or formal intelligence in pursuit of age-appropriate character, suggesting that respect for children's environments and experiences manifests through thoughtful design that serves developmental needs while honoring aesthetic sensibility, creating objects that belong equally in adult-curated spaces and child-centered play environments, furniture that teaches spatial relationships, encourages organizational habits, and demonstrates that everyday functional objects can embody beauty, intelligence, and care.

Unique Properties
It can be used as a small stool and mini table set for children, or as a set of two stools for parents and children to use together.
The light green three-legged stool can be inserted from all four sides of the box and played with like a puzzle. There is no one right way to use it. The user can experiment with various ways of using the product in his or her own fun way, which brings out the pure imagination and intuition of the user.

Production Technology
White ash wood was used as the material. In order to express the texture of a child's toy, it was solidly colored with car paint and given a fun and vibrant color scheme throughout. In order to eliminate the wood grain, the surface was polished many times with fine sandpaper to give it a fine and smooth texture. All corners are slightly rounded to make it safe for young children to handle.
Design Challenge
The biggest challenge in creating this product was to consider the dimensions so that one product could be used in various ways, such as as a table for children or a chair for adults. We considered the appropriate dimensions of the product based on ergonomics, and were conscious of not losing the overall cute, toy-like impression.
Project Duration
The project started in June 2024 and ended in September 2024.
Operation Flow
This piece is an experimental product that is not only practical, but is also fun to use, as it explores how people feel and what actions they take when they see it. The unique, pop visuals will surprise and delight those who see it.
Appropriate dimensions have been considered, anticipating a variety of possible uses, and by deliberately not restricting it to a single use, it draws out the pure imagination of the person who will use it.
This product will further expand children's imaginations and stimulate the curiosity of adults as well.
Research
We aimed to create a product that everyone, regardless of age or gender, could enjoy thinking about together and engage with with a sense of fun and freshness. We aimed for a mysterious shape that would not immediately reveal what the product is at first glance, and we were conscious of creating time for users to think about how to use it in their own fun way, just like playing with a toyThe outside of the box is simple white and the inside is bright green, making both children and adults want to take a peek inside.
Inspiration
This product was inspired by the shape of toys that children play with.
The older I get, the more I think that small furniture for children looks like cute toys.
We came up with a product that gives form to this lovely feeling.
Is this product furniture for children? Is it a big toy for adults to play with?
We aimed to create a flexible and unique product that both adult and children can think about and enjoy together, just as they would play with a toy.
