About Kweichow Moutai Baijiu Packaging

Kweichow Moutai is a packaging design for a Chinese spirit sold in Japan. The bottle shape is based on the classic Moutai bottle and takes the colors and character of Ru Kiln porcelain, which began in the Tang dynasty. The calligraphy on the package comes from a poem by the Japanese poet Prince Nagaya, written during the Tang dynasty. The same phrase appeared on relief supplies sent from Japan to Wuhan, recalling long cultural exchange between the two countries. The package measures 77 by 77 by 173 millimeters. The design serves as a medium for cultural exchange.

Heijie He's Kweichow Moutai Baijiu Packaging exemplifies the sophisticated intersection of ancestral craft traditions and contemporary luxury design sensibilities, creating a presentation system that honors centuries of ceramic artistry while speaking fluently to modern aesthetic expectations. The designer appears to have drawn deeply from the wells of East Asian material culture, selecting celadon—a glaze historically associated with imperial refinement and scholarly appreciation—as the chromatic foundation for both bottle and outer carton, thereby establishing immediate connotations of preciousness, cultivation, and timeless elegance. The bottle's distinctive pagoda-form stopper merits particular attention as a masterful exercise in material dialogue, wherein the warm organic presence of carved wood introduces terrestrial grounding against the cool mineral quality of glazed ceramic, while simultaneously evoking traditional architectural forms that carry profound cultural resonance. The surface treatment of the ceramic body, exhibiting the characteristic crackle pattern known in ceramic scholarship as crazing, suggests the deliberate cultivation of aged beauty—the aesthetic principle wherein time's passage enhances rather than diminishes an object's value. Calligraphic elements inscribed upon the vessel demonstrate confident brushwork, their fluid gestures standing in productive tension with the geometric precision of the outer carton's diagonal striping. The chromatic strategy achieves unity through repetition of the celadon field while permitting variation through the warm accents of the medallion and stopper, the soft botanical intervention of cherry blossoms, and the graphic authority of cream and navy. One might observe how this packaging system operates simultaneously as protective vessel, cultural statement, and aesthetic object, inviting contemplation of how contemporary design practice can serve as custodian of heritage while remaining vitally engaged with present sensibilities.

Unique Properties
Lands apart, yet sharing the same sky, the calligraphy featured on the package is derived from a poem by the Japanese poet Prince Nagaya during the Tang Dynasty. He commissioned an ambassador to present kasaya to Buddhist monks during this period. This phrase was also inscribed on the relief supplies donated by Japan during the fight against the epidemic in Wuhan, serving as a testament to the historical friendly exchanges between China and Japan. Designed to highlight the commonalities and unique characteristics of both cultures, the product serves as a medium for cultural exchange.

Production Technology
The shape of the bottle is inspired by the classic Moutai bottle, incorporating the characteristics and colors of the elegant Ru Kiln porcelain, which originated in the Tang dynasty and became one of the five renowned kilns during the Song dynasty.
Design Challenge
The product is manufactured in China and sold exclusively in Japan, necessitating an understanding of both cultures, as well as the differences in laws and regulations. This complexity makes it challenging to design the product effectively. It is essential to consider multiple aspects simultaneously.
Project Duration
Renhuai city 24 July 2023 - 7 August 2023
Operation Flow
By thoroughly analyzing both Chinese and Japanese cultures, the representative elements and symbols are systematically combined to produce results that will satisfy both clients and consumers.
Research
During the Tang dynasty, China and Japan engaged in frequent cultural exchanges, with numerous Japanese ambassadors, exchange students, and monks traveling to the Tang dynasty to study. This interaction significantly impacted Japan, influencing its politics, economy, culture, aesthetics, philosophy, education, and various other fields. The culture of the Tang dynasty is highly esteemed and recognized by the people of both countries, which is why we chose it as the foundation for the design of this product entering Japan.
Inspiration
This product is part of the Kweichow Moutai Group's series of cultural spirits entering the Japanese market. By studying the cultures of both China and Japan, this product was developed using elements from the Tang Dynasty, which resonate deeply with the people of both countries.
