About ldeafonts Qingyili Typeface

Qingyili is a Chinese typeface based on the official script of the Han Dynasty and on the angular brushstrokes of Northern Dynasties tablet inscriptions. The typeface keeps the silkworm head and wild goose tail stroke forms of traditional calligraphy. Character forms are upright and solid, with slightly expanded inner spaces and uniform stroke thickness that support clear reading. Several weights are available, so the family suits headlines and body text in both print and digital media. The aim is to join calligraphic character with modern typographic function.

Shanghai Yichuang Information Technology's ldeafonts Qingyili Typeface engages the longstanding tradition of typographic specimen presentation, a genre that dates to early printing history when founders and publishers documented their available typefaces for commercial and archival purposes, evolving through centuries from ornamental specimen books through modernist systematic catalogs to contemporary digital presentations that balance technical documentation with aesthetic assertion. This particular specimen demonstrates accomplished understanding of how typographic information can be structured to communicate both systematic comprehensiveness and visual elegance, employing a disciplined compositional strategy that organizes multiple weight or stylistic variants within a unified visual field while maintaining absolute legibility and professional clarity. The chromatic restraint evidences sophisticated color theory application, where the nearly monochromatic gray-scale foundation allows typographic form itself to command primary attention without chromatic distraction, while the strategic ultramarine accent dots function as curatorial markers that guide viewer attention through the systematic presentation, these saturated punctuation points creating measured rhythm and suggesting points of special consideration within the font family's range. The pixelated checkerboard motif occupying the left margin demonstrates particular compositional intelligence, serving multiple simultaneous functions: as visual texture that enlivens the otherwise austere field, as measuring grid that establishes proportional relationships, as digital-age reference that acknowledges the technological substrate of contemporary type design, and as rhythmic element that creates visual music through systematic tonal alternation. The vertical columnar organization suggests confidence in the typeface's systematic integrity, presenting multiple variants simultaneously to demonstrate family cohesion while celebrating individual character variation, each column functioning as both independent specimen and component within larger typographic argument. The technical execution reveals professional-grade precision characteristic of established type foundries and design studios, where every stroke terminal, junction, and counter space receives meticulous attention, the letterforms exhibiting the geometric refinement and optical adjustment that distinguish accomplished typeface design from amateur efforts. What emerges most compellingly from sustained viewing is how this specimen navigates the essential tension within typography between systematic consistency necessary for functional communication and expressive variation that grants texts visual personality and cultural resonance, the Qingyili family apparently offering designers a range of weights or styles that maintain recognizable family resemblance while providing sufficient variation to construct complex visual hierarchies within multi-layered information environments. How might contemporary typeface design continue to honor both the mathematical precision enabled by digital tools and the humanistic warmth that connects readers emotionally to textual content, and what role does specimen presentation itself play in articulating these negotiations between technological capability and human-centered communication?

Production Technology
Through extensive research of official script stone inscriptions of the Han Dynasty and the tablet inscriptions of the Northern Dynasties, the design team discovered character structures that align with modern typographic needs. Using digital technologies to analyze, extract, and refine the structure, they ultimately developed this innovative font.
Design Challenge
Most official script fonts on the market face two main issues: some overly emphasize traditional brushwork at the cost of functionality, while others sacrifice the script’s charm for functionality. The font tackles that challenge by drawing on the structure of the official script and angular brushstrokes, thus preserving the charm of traditional Chinese calligraphy while enhancing its versatility for contemporary use, striking a visual balance between artistic flair and practical readability.
Project Duration
Development of the font began in January 2023, with the first weight officially released in June. By March 2024, the complete font family—comprising eight distinct weights—was fully launched.
Operation Flow
Structurally, the font features slightly expanded inner spaces and solid, upright character forms. Uniform stroke thickness contributes to a neoclassical style, while maintaining excellent legibility. Available in seven weights, it is suitable for a wide range of layout needs, from headlines to body text, and from print to digital media.
Research
As a key script in the evolution of Chinese characters, official script features silkworm-head and wild-goose-tail strokes, expanded inner spaces, and upright forms, becoming a classic style of Chinese calligraphy. Drawing on the official script and modernized angular brushstrokes, it inherits the cultural essence of traditional Chinese calligraphy and meets the functional needs of modern graphic design and personal daily use, driving the diversified development of Chinese creative fonts.
Inspiration
Inspired by the traditional stone inscription style from the late official script period, it retains iconic features like the silkworm-head and wild-goose-tail stroke forms and the alternation of curves and straight lines, with starting strokes rounded and full like silkworms and ending strokes stretching out gracefully like geese. Incorporating modern font and angular brushstrokes, it ensures clean transitions and elegant movement, blending traditional charm with modern touch.
