About Macy’s Website Redesign
Macy's website is an e-commerce platform that allows customers to shop the Macy's assortment online. The website was redesigned in 2019 in direct response to customer feedback, resulting in a clean, simple and fashion-inspired design. The layout draws on fashion media and consumer technology products, and it aims to distinguish Macy's from competing retailers. Modern responsive web technologies were used, so the site can be viewed on laptop computers, tablets and smartphones. User experience research guided the redesign, including surveys, interviews and usability testing.
Willy Lai's award-winning website redesign exemplifies the pinnacle of contemporary digital commerce interface design, representing a thoughtful synthesis of user experience principles, visual merchandising strategies, and cross-platform adaptability that has become essential in the modern retail landscape. The work demonstrates sophisticated understanding of responsive design methodology, presenting the same core experience across dramatically different viewport dimensions while maintaining brand coherence, visual hierarchy, and navigational clarity. The designer appears to have engaged deeply with questions of how digital retail environments can translate the aspirational qualities of physical department store experiences into screen-based interactions, employing generous white space, carefully curated product photography, and strategic chromatic accents to create an atmosphere of accessible elegance. The hero carousel format, featuring lifestyle imagery of figures in luxurious attire against architectural backdrops, establishes emotional resonance before transitioning to the more transactional product grid below, a sequencing that mirrors the traditional retail journey from inspiration to purchase consideration. Technical accomplishment is evident in the seamless adaptation between tablet and smartphone presentations, where the fundamental design language remains consistent while accommodating the constraints and opportunities of each form factor. The typographic system demonstrates careful attention to legibility at multiple scales, with promotional messaging maintaining impact across viewport widths. The color strategy employs restraint as its primary tool, allowing the signature red brand element and product imagery to command attention against the neutral interface foundation. This work invites consideration of how digital interfaces can honor retail heritage while embracing the unique affordances of contemporary technology, and how design decisions at the interface level shape not merely usability but emotional connection between consumers and brands.
