About Melty Storage Jar
Melty is a glass storage jar designed to make stylish presentations to guests. The handles are combined with a transparent glass jar and a transparent acrylic lid so that they can stand out with their sculptural form and bright colors. The handles, made of polyester material, are painted with auto acrylic paint and mounted on the lid with screws.
Tableware design inhabits a unique territory within the broader landscape of applied arts, operating at the intimate intersection of daily ritual, material culture, and aesthetic contemplation, and Tülin Atamer's Melty Storage Jar navigates this territory with considerable ingenuity, presenting a functional vessel system that transcends mere utility to become a meditation on transformation, indulgence, and the poetic potential embedded within everyday domestic objects. The design demonstrates notable compositional and formal intelligence, organizing a family of transparent glass containers—each exhibiting the pristine clarity and geometric precision characteristic of contemporary minimalist tableware—into a cohesive visual system unified by the unexpected presence of lustrous bronze-toned sculptural elements that appear to cascade, drip, and flow across the vessels' rims and surfaces with the viscosity of molten confection or liquid metal. This formal strategy achieves multiple simultaneous effects, the biomorphic bronze forms providing visual punctuation and haptic invitation while their flowing contours suggest arrested motion and temporal suspension, the moment when liquid becomes solid preserved indefinitely for contemplation and use. The chromatic decision to employ warm bronze metallic tones against transparent glass and a saturated terracotta-to-coral backdrop reveals sophisticated understanding of color psychology and material association, the copper-amber palette evoking culinary abundance, preserved sweetness, artisanal craft, and accessible luxury while maintaining sufficient restraint to avoid excessive ornamentation or visual chaos. Technical execution appears meticulous throughout, the glass elements exhibiting flawless optical clarity and precise geometric control while the bronze sculptural components display immaculate surface refinement with carefully calibrated specular highlights suggesting either precision casting, digital fabrication, or masterful hand-finishing, all contributing to an overall impression of considered design development and thoughtful material deployment. Thematically, the work seems to explore several interrelated conceptual territories, primarily the transformation of substances from one state to another, the preservation of ephemeral pleasure, the containment of overflow and abundance, and the elevation of everyday functional objects into aesthetic experiences worthy of contemplation. The visual metaphor of flowing, dripping substance simultaneously suggests culinary indulgence—chocolate, caramel, honey, syrup—and industrial processes—molten metal, flowing glaze, liquid cooling into permanent form—thus positioning the domestic kitchen as a site of both sensory pleasure and material transformation. One might observe affinities with the surrealist tradition of defamiliarization and playful subversion of physical expectations, recalling works that freeze motion or juxtapose incompatible material states, yet the design maintains sufficient functional clarity and approachable warmth to avoid alienating strangeness, instead inviting the viewer to imagine the tactile experience of lifting the bronze-topped lid, the satisfying weight of metal against glass, the revelation of preserved contents within, and the small daily pleasure of beautiful functional objects thoughtfully designed. What narratives of preservation, indulgence, and everyday ritual might such vessels contain, and how might the presence of beautifully considered design within domestic space subtly elevate the quality of daily experience and cultivate appreciation for material craft and aesthetic intention?

- Production Technology
- Melty was produced by applying auto acrylic paint on polyester material. First, I shaped the Melty handles with ceramic paste in my hand. I smoothed them with sandpaper. After painting with spray paint, the molds of these models were taken and mass production was done with polyester. The polyesters obtained were puttyed and sanded in 4 layers and painted with auto acrylic paint. Varnishing was done on them. Melty's glass jars were handmade in the glass factory. The lids were cut from acrylic material in special sizes. Melty handles were fixed to the acrylic lids by screwing.
- Design Challenge
- The most difficult part of the production was painting the polyester Melty handles smoothly and shiny on all sides after they came out of the mold.
- Project Duration
- The project design and hand-made ceramic dough production began in Istanbul in August 2023. After various production trials, it was completed in March 2024.
- Operation Flow
- The handles are ergonomically designed to allow easy holding and opening of the lid.
- Research
- While making Melty handles, I did some research on which material I could make the shape I imagined. Among the alternatives of polyester, glass, wood, and ceramic, I focused on polyester, which I was sure would be the easiest to mass-produce and durable. Then, I shaped the forms I imagined one by one with ceramic paste in my hand and sanded them to their final form. Silicone molds of the shapes I obtained were taken and I had hundreds of polyester copies. Afterwards, I researched painting techniques that would allow me to paint smoothly. The smooth and shiny paint I liked the most was auto acrylic paint. Since I did not want to glue the handles to my acrylic covers, I researched how to fix the screw to the handle and the types of nuts. I mounted the handles to the acrylic covers with the help of this screw.
- Inspiration
- Inspired by the action of melting and flowing, Melty was designed to be a part of stylish and different presentations. While making Melty, I researched how I could go into mass production, how I could achieve the shiny and smooth appearance I wanted, and how I could mount Melty without gluing it to the acrylic cover.
