About Milano System Modular Urban Backpack

Milano System is a modular urban backpack made in Italy. The main pack measures 480 mm in height, 300 mm in width and 170 mm in depth, and offers a volume of 25 litres, expandable to 35 litres. Separate modules, including a laptop organizer, an anchor, an everyday block and a packing block, can be attached to and detached from the main pack. Magnetic locking hardware allows opening and closing with one hand. Abrasion-resistant and water-resistant fabrics are used. Two compartments and several pockets keep daily items organized.

The Milano System Modular Urban Backpack by Alex Feriotto, recipient of the Golden A' Design Award in Fashion and Travel Accessories, exemplifies the contemporary pursuit of adaptive functionality within sophisticated aesthetic parameters, presenting a complete organizational ecosystem that addresses the complex demands of modern urban mobility. This collection demonstrates how thoughtful design methodology can transform the quotidian challenge of personal item organization into an elegant systematic solution, where each component maintains individual integrity while participating in a larger coherent visual and functional language. The material selection reveals careful consideration of durability, tactile pleasure, and visual refinement, with technical textiles suggesting resilience against urban environmental challenges while leather-like accents introduce warmth and craftsmanship associations that elevate the ensemble beyond purely utilitarian categorization. The chromatic restraint of the predominantly dark palette communicates professional sophistication and versatile style adaptability, while the strategic cerulean accent visible through the opened attachment panel demonstrates the designer's understanding of color as both aesthetic element and functional wayfinding aid within complex systems. Hardware execution suggests precision engineering philosophy, where circular snap mechanisms appear both mechanically robust and visually rhythmic in their repeated placement patterns. The compositional presentation itself merits consideration as design communication, demonstrating how individual modules relate spatially while maintaining autonomous utility. One might observe how the central backpack's architectural form anchors the visual field while smaller components suggest expandability and customization possibilities, inviting viewers to imagine personal configurations suited to their individual organizational philosophies and daily rhythms.

Design Challenge
The first challenge was to find an intuitive and easy-to-use modular system. We researched the military field and came up with a solution based on innovative magnetic hooks. This system allows us to offer a product that is both technical and user-friendly. The second one was building a supply chain entirely based in Italy that would balance quality and price and we successfully achieved this by finding reliable suppliers. We managed to develop the project during all the lockdowns due to Covid-19
Project Duration
The project started in January 2020 and finished in March 2021 in Milan, Italy.
Operation Flow
Featuring Fidlock innovative magnetic locking hardware, you can effortlessly lock and unlock your backpack with one-hand management. The backpack has two compartments, three inner pockets, and one front pocket to quickly access your essentials.
While the Milano Anchor provides modularity through the magnetic system that quickly and securely attaches modules to the pack.
Research
We did in-depth market research to identify all the pros and cons of both modular and non-modular backpacks on the market. We also did qualitative & quantitative research with questionnaires to a group of people from different cities of Europe (who belong to our target group) to understand the needs and what they would prefer in a daily backpack both from the point of view of functionality and design.
Inspiration
Like most people who live in the urban landscape, we spend our days living our lives at full speed. A backpack is our best companion in our dynamic life, where we carry everything we need to stay on the go. However, the variety of activities requires us to overfill them or carry multiple bags. That's how we came up with the idea of creating an ultra-versatile modular backpack, combining the functionality found in the best backpacks, with Italian aesthetics and carefully selected materials.
