About Narrative Installation Educational Institution Building
Narrative Installation is a history museum created for an art academy campus in Guangzhou, China. The project transforms an existing campus building into a spatial narrative device that combines architecture, exhibition, landscape, and immersive media. Nine thematic zones are arranged in a loop across about 2315 square meters and are linked by a central foyer with two entrances. Touch panels, motion-activated visuals, and narrative lighting allow visitors to move at their own pace. Lightweight structural retrofitting supports flexible spatial change.
Wu Duan's Narrative Installation Educational Institution Building represents a distinguished contribution to contemporary educational architecture, embodying principles of spatial narrative and experiential design that transform the conventional school typology into an environment fostering both individual contemplation and collective engagement. The work demonstrates sophisticated understanding of how architectural form shapes pedagogical experience, with the bilateral arrangement of classroom wings creating a powerful central axis that simultaneously provides orientation and encourages movement through carefully calibrated sequences of compression and release. The warm terracotta-toned cladding establishes immediate material presence, its earthy resonance suggesting permanence and groundedness appropriate to institutions of learning while avoiding the coldness sometimes associated with institutional buildings. Technical accomplishment manifests in the seamless integration of circulation systems, where continuous balcony corridors provide covered outdoor passage between spaces while creating the distinctive horizontal rhythms that animate the facades. The chromatic strategy demonstrates particular sensitivity, the warm building envelopes creating dialogue with cooler ground plane treatments and sky, establishing a thermal equilibrium that renders the courtyard both inviting and visually dynamic. One observes careful attention to human scale despite the institutional magnitude, with the inclusion of figures throughout the composition revealing how the architecture accommodates rather than overwhelms its inhabitants. The curvilinear pathway cutting through the geometric order introduces necessary tension, suggesting that education itself involves both structure and creative deviation. The work appears to engage traditions of modernist educational design while incorporating contemporary biophilic principles, the strategic tree placement providing shade, visual interest, and connection to natural systems. Viewers might contemplate how architectural environments shape learning experiences and community formation, considering what spatial qualities best support intellectual and personal growth.
Press Kit
- Unique Properties

- Production Technology
- The project employs immersive media, modular exhibition systems, and spatial sequencing techniques. Integration of audiovisual content, narrative lighting, and custom-built interactive installations enhances the user journey. Lightweight structural retrofitting allows for flexible spatial transformation of the existing campus structure.
- Design Challenge
- The greatest challenge was balancing historical accuracy with contemporary engagement. Adapting an existing space while ensuring architectural integrity and digital functionality required resolving technical, symbolic, and emotional complexities under tight deadlines and budgetary limitations.
- Project Duration
- The project started in October 2022 in Guangzhou, China, and finished in November 2023. It was inaugurated as part of the 70th anniversary celebrations of Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts on the University City campus.
- Operation Flow
- Visitors move through nine thematic zones laid out in a loop, guided by multimedia storytelling and physical cues. Interaction occurs through touch panels, motion-activated visuals, and layered content, allowing users to navigate at their own pace while forming personal connections with historical content.
- Research
- A qualitative, user-focused study was conducted to explore spatial narrative in education environments. Methods included archival analysis, stakeholder interviews, and prototyping. Insights revealed the effectiveness of immersive design in enhancing historical engagement, influencing educational institutions seeking experiential storytelling.
- Inspiration
- Inspired by the 70th anniversary of Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts, the design reimagines how institutional memory can be conveyed through space. Drawing from contemporary narrative theory and spatial storytelling, it seeks to build a dynamic bridge between historical legacy and the evolving cultural consciousness of future generations.
