About Noto Electronic Paper Display

Noto is an electronic paper display for offices and personal workspaces. Mounted on a wall with magnets, Noto works as a meeting room sign, and a red screen indicates that a room is occupied. Placed on a desk with the integrated rotating ring stand, Noto shows to-do lists and calendars in portrait or landscape orientation. The three-color screen is free of glare and uses power only when the content is refreshed. Content is updated remotely over a wireless network. Three AA batteries last one to two years. The body is made of recyclable matte ABS.

sxdesign's Noto Electronic Paper Display emerges from design traditions that honor both the historical reverence for paper as humanity's primary information substrate and contemporary aspirations toward sustainable, eye-friendly digital reading technologies, positioning itself within the evolving category of electronic paper displays that seek to replicate the optical characteristics of ink on paper while providing the dynamic content capabilities of digital screens. The compositional presentation reveals sophisticated formal intelligence: the diagonal arrangement of two devices creates dynamic visual interest while simultaneously demonstrating product versatility through the display of both portrait and landscape orientations, and the decision to feature one device's screen surface alongside another's rear housing provides comprehensive informational content within a single composed view, a strategy common to professional product photography yet elevated here through exceptional tonal control and spatial choreography. The material palette speaks to contemporary industrial design values emphasizing refined minimalism and tactile quality, with the apparent aluminum or magnesium alloy construction suggesting both premium positioning and functional lightness, while the matte surface treatment resists fingerprints and glare, practical considerations integrated seamlessly into aesthetic expression. The circular element featured prominently on the rear surface demonstrates particular formal achievement: its concentric ring structure creates compelling geometric focus while the dimensional relief modeling catches light subtly, transforming what might be purely functional hardware into a compositional anchor point that rewards close examination, this attention to detail in seemingly secondary surfaces revealing design philosophy that extends aesthetic consideration to all user touchpoints. The electronic paper display technology itself, visible on the forward-tilted device as a deep, light-absorbing black surface, represents significant technical achievement in creating non-emissive displays that reflect rather than project light, reducing eye strain during extended reading sessions while dramatically lowering power consumption compared to traditional backlit screens, though the visual presentation here celebrates the technology's formal qualities rather than explicating technical specifications. The chromatic restraint throughout the composition, operating almost entirely within grayscale registers punctuated by the brilliant white accent ring, evokes both the historical aesthetics of printed matter in black ink on white paper and the minimalist design movements of the mid-twentieth century that championed essential form and material honesty over decorative elaboration, suggesting the devices participate in longer design conversations about reduction, clarity, and purposeful simplicity. One might observe how the presentation style itself, with its floating devices against infinite gradient backgrounds, draws upon visual conventions established in contemporary consumer electronics marketing yet executes these conventions with particular refinement, the soft shadows and atmospheric depth creating presence without drama, confidence without bombast. The composition invites consideration of how physical design can honor analog reading traditions while embracing digital capabilities, how material choices can communicate quality and intentionality, how geometric simplicity can achieve visual sophistication, and how technological products might aspire not merely to functional adequacy but to the contemplative satisfaction traditionally associated with well-crafted physical objects, the careful attention to proportion, surface, edge, and spatial relationship throughout suggesting design practice rooted in humanistic values and aesthetic conviction that extends beyond purely utilitarian concerns.

Unique Properties
Noto is a dual-state E-ink display serving as a professional meeting sign or personal productivity tool. It transitions from a wall-mounted 'Notice' board to a desktop 'Note' via a 360-degree rotating stand. The tri-color, glare-free screen offers a paper-like experience, while the elegant integrated curved back feels organic in any environment. Powered by 3 AA batteries, it ensures a sustainable 1-2 year lifespan, avoiding the impact of lithium-ion waste.
Dimensions & Packaging
Dimensions: 178mm (W) x 119mm (D) x 28mm (H). Screen: Three-color E-ink (Red, White, Black). Connectivity: Wireless Network (Wi-Fi). Power Source: 3 x AA Batteries. Mounting: Magnetic wall-mount and integrated rotating ring stand. Orientation: Supports both horizontal and vertical display modes.

Production Technology
The device uses Tri-Color E-Ink technology, consuming power only during refreshes for 'Always-On' visibility without drain. The body features recyclable, matte ABS to complement the paper-like display. Internal hardware is optimized for ultra-low power, integrating Wi-Fi for cloud synchronization. High-strength neodymium magnets ensure stable mounting on various surfaces.
Design Challenge
The primary design challenge was reconciling the volumetric constraints of three AA batteries with the aesthetic requirement for a slim, modern profile. Furthermore, engineering the dual-mode interaction posed a significant structural hurdle; magnetic attachments had to be secure for wall mounting yet effortless for desktop use, necessitating iterative testing of hinge torque. Finally, optimizing Wi-Fi wake-up protocols ensured battery life without slowing sync.
Project Duration
The project started in Beijing, China in August 2025 and finished in January 2026.
Operation Flow
Users update content remotely via a dedicated mobile app or web interface. For professional use, NOTO magnetically snaps onto the wall as a meeting room indicator. A red screen indicates "Occupied," offering clear visual cues from a distance. For personal use, the rotating ring stand allows desktop placement. The rotating mechanism allows for quick switching between portrait (To-do lists) and landscape (Calendars) orientations, providing an intuitive and tactile user experience.
Research
Market trends show a surge in "Quiet Technology" to combat screen fatigue and paper waste. Our research balanced energy autonomy with seamless connectivity. User testing proved the tri-color (Red/Black/White) palette signals status—like "Occupied"—more effectively than monochrome, without the glare of glowing screens. Additionally, choosing AA batteries over lithium cells extends product life and simplifies recycling, firmly aligning with modern eco-standards.
Inspiration
Noto was inspired by the desire to bridge the gap between static paper efficiency and digital flexibility. Traditional paper generates waste, while standard screens cause visual fatigue and high energy consumption. Noto aims to be a "living piece of paper"—an eco-friendly, non-intrusive information hub that adapts to both collaborative office and personal workspaces.
