About Optical Sorting Biological Cell Sorting
Optical Sorting is an optical cell sorting system developed for biomedical research. Cells are loaded into a microfluidic chip and guided by optical-induced dielectrophoresis, which sorts the samples without damage. An imaging system records the cells, and software analyzes the images in real time to identify and classify each cell. Sorted cells are then collected for culture and further study. Tens of thousands of single cells can be handled at the same time, so positive plasma cell screening can be completed in one day. The instrument measures 60 by 80 by 170 centimeters.
Beihang University's Optical Sorting Biological Cell Sorting system exemplifies the sophisticated convergence of advanced scientific instrumentation with thoughtful industrial design principles that characterizes the most accomplished contemporary laboratory equipment, positioning itself within a lineage of precision research apparatus that traces from early microscopy innovations through to today's integrated digital analysis systems, the design demonstrates exceptional compositional intelligence in its handling of visual mass distribution and proportional relationships that guide the eye naturally across functional zones while maintaining unified formal coherence, the chromatic strategy employs a deliberately restrained palette where expansive pearl white surfaces establish clinical purity and professional authority while precisely placed emerald green bands introduce vitality and visual navigation without overwhelming the instrument's serious scientific character, technical accomplishment reveals itself through the seamless integration of diverse functional requirements including observation chamber access, internal optical mechanisms, ventilation systems, and digital interface positioning into a singular sculptural statement that reads as inevitable rather than compromised, the smoky observation window serves both practical transparency needs and compositional purposes by breaking the white expanse with a substantial dark rectangle that anchors visual weight while permitting glimpses into the instrument's sophisticated interior workings, thematic content engages fundamental human aspirations toward understanding life at its most fundamental cellular level, suggesting the profound scientific endeavors this apparatus enables in fields from medical research to biological discovery, the integrated display terminal echoing the instrument's color language suggests systematic design thinking extending beyond hardware to encompass complete user experience, viewers might contemplate how such elegant resolution of complex functional requirements into coherent visual form reflects broader human capacities for bringing order and beauty to our most ambitious scientific undertakings.

These technologies work in concert to achieve precise manipulation, efficient sorting, rapid analysis, and automated processing of cells, thereby providing powerful tools for biomedical research.
- Project Duration
- The project started in December 2020 in Beijing and finished in August 2023 in Beijing.
- Operation Flow
- First, the cells or other biological samples to be sorted are prepared and loaded into the microfluidic chip of the system. Then, the optical-induced dielectrophoresis technology is used to manipulate and sort the cells based on their properties. During this process, the imaging system captures the images of the cells, and the software analyzes the images in real-time to identify and classify the cells. Finally, the sorted cells are collected, and the results are output and processed for subsequent research.
- Research
- In our research, we looked into a particular topic to gain more insights. We conducted experiments or studies, using various tools like scientific instruments or software, depending on what we were focusing on. If it involved people, we had participants; if it was about animals or cells, those were our subjects. Through our methods, we observed, collected data, and tested different conditions. The results revealed interesting findings, such as a new relationship or a significant change. These findings gave us new understandings and could point the way for future research.
